NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

February 6, 2012 4:42 pm

Peoria (IL) Manual OT Logan Tuley-Tillman was back on Michigan’s campus again this weekend visiting the program that has been in the pole position for his services for the better part of the last few months. But now that he has visited a few other schools, are the Wolverines still on top for his services?

Logan Tuley-Tillman has become something of a regular in Ann Arbor in recent weeks.  Over the last two-and-a-half months the rising junior lineman has been to Michigan’s campus for two football games and a basketball game.  Saturday he added a Michigan hockey contest to his Maize & Blue ledger.  As was the case with all of his prior visits, he left town having been blown away by the experience.

“(The hockey game) was crackin’,” said an excited Tuley-Tillman.  “I really liked the whole atmosphere up there.  It’s real nice.  I heard a couple of (the chants).  The fans are real crazy (laughing).  They get it poppin' in there!”

“Plus I was walking around and the people all know me.  A lot of the fans just come up to me, greet me, and talk to me.  I really like the fans that work hard all week, and then Fridays they spend their money to take their families out to a Michigan game.  That means a lot.  Those are the ones that really come to support you, and those are the ones I really love talking to.”

Tuley-Tillman found himself just as taken with a group Michigan coaches that once again demonstrated what a priority he is.  The entire Wolverine staff had traveled down to Columbus, Ohio for the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association coaches clinic late last week, but a few made it back early to spend time with the Peoria Manual star.  Later when more staff members arrived, he not only received some extended face-time them, he also had a chance to chat with one of the current players.

“Coach Roy Manning was with me the whole time, so he was there all day,” Tuley-Tillman stated.  “Coach Hoke stopped through and said what’s up. Coach Heck came back and Coach Funk did too.  It was actually (Funk’s) birthday.  We sat down and watched some film, and I also talked with Taylor Lewan about why he went there.”

It was yet another positive Michigan experience, but not one that moved him closer to pulling the trigger on a decision.  After recently announcing his plan to move off of his March 20th decision deadline so he could more thoroughly research his newer suitors, talk of committing hasn’t been a prevalent topic.  Saturday at Michigan was no exception.

“They don’t really don’t even care (about the timeline adjustment),” Tuley-Tillman said.  “They’re just happy about everything.  They just see me as their little Logan.”

By prolonging his process, the door stays wide open for other suitors to improve their standing. That’s exactly what Iowa did when it extended a scholarship offer during his Sunday visit to Iowa City.

“They were showing me all of their offensive line tradition for o-line,” he recalled.  “I’ve actually got a coach up at Core6 that went there, Mike Jones.  Then my AAU coach is a real successful alum from there too.  I’ve seen their success outside of football and that made me want to get up there and at least see it.  They’ve got a real good track record for putting out offensive linemen.”

The Hawkeyes firmed up their place on a list of favorites that also includes Michigan, Alabama, Florida State, Arkansas, Ohio State and Notre Dame.  That said, two of those schools stand out above all the rest.  That was once a distinction that Michigan held alone, but a recent visit down south changed that.

“It’s like a tie for #1 between Michigan and Alabama,” said Tuley-Tillman. “It was good down there too.  It’s a good college town.  You can tell why they’re successful.  They’re strength coach is really one of the best.  (Nick Saban) called me into his office and he pressed a little button to shut the door.  I actually was in there for a couple of minutes when (an Alabama offer was extended) while me and my aunt were in there talking to him.  He’s a real good guy.  You can tell why he is successful.”

The Wolverines will get their chance to try to pull ahead again when 6-7, 280-pounder makes his way Ann Arbor this weekend for the fifth time… a trip on which he hopes his mother will accompany him.

“We’re still trying to figure it all out,” he said regarding his mother’s attendance.  “We don’t know yet.”

One thing he does know is which number he’ll be wearing in college.  A weekend tweet that read, “Just found out I will be keeping my #72 in college. Ballgame!!” caused some fans to speculate that he had reached a decision.  Not so according to Tuley-Tillman.

“At all my top schools, #72 is going to be open,” he said laughingly.

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

February 6, 2012 4:45 pm

Commit number three comes in for the Michigan Wolverines, Detroit Crockett tight end Khalid Hill.
Detroit Crockett tight end Khalid Hill became Michigan's third commitment today. Both Hill and his head coach Rod Oden confirmed the offer and the commitment, as Hill went up to campus today.

"He got offered 20 minutes ago. He jumped on right away," Oden said. "Michigan fan all his life. He said that if it ever came, there would be no reason to wait. He's comfortable here, he's a 4.0 student, so he was looking at the academics and he wanted to continue his relationship with Shane [Morris], a few of the other Cass guys he knows and build that tradition together."

Oden says he best describes the 6'2, 230-lb junior with "versatility." He caught 29 passes for 448 yards and six touchdowns as a junior and also chipped in 55 tackles and six sacks.

"He's a great pass catcher. He has the blocking ability of a lineman, the athletic ability of a skill guy, and the hands of a wide receiver, so he's a match-up nightmare. What he brought to the table for us this year was, he created mismatches down seams of the field."

He'll do the same for the Wolverines, but also fill a couple of other roles as well.

"It's a tight end/H-Back kind of deal. He's a utility guy, who will be motioning from fullback, get work done in the slot. They'll move him around a lot. They sat him down and told him how they're going to use him. They said he'd do a lot of what Kevin Koger did last year."

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

February 7, 2012 9:30 am

Pickerington North (OH) TE/DE Jake Butt fancies himself a bit of a basketball player also, so GBW made it down to Ohio Friday night to watch him put his hardwood game on display. He didn't disappoint, scoring 30 points in a 55-46 win over Gahanna Lincoln. Afterward he discussed his recruitment and revealed that there is a top school on his list, and #2 isn't even close. Video highlights included

It’s already widely known that Pickerington North (OH) junior Jake Butt is a skilled two-way athlete on the football field, but Friday evening he showed that he can get it done on the basketball floor as well.  The 6-6, 225-pounder powered in 30 points in a 55-46 rivalry win over Gahanna Lincoln.

Butt was playing for more than a just the victory. The team and community came together to play for children with autism.

"It was a good win for our team,” he said afterward.  “I’ve got to credit my teammates… it was senior night and autism night. We packed the stands we were playing for more than just a game, for autistic kids and the seniors.”

As good as he is on the basketball floor for Pickerington North, Butt knows his bread is buttered on the gridiron where he is a standout tight end and defensive end.  Michigan is courting the talented youngster as a tight end and through its persistent recruiting effort has carved out an enviable place on his list.

"Michigan is definitely my leading school right now, by far… it’s not even close,” he reported.  “Their coaches are showing me a lot of attention.  I have been up to the campus twice and loved it there, and seemed to grow a great relationship with coach (Jerry) Montgomery who is my recruiting coordinator.  I already had five (Michigan) coaches come down to school to see me, so that is big. They are telling me I am their leading tight end on the board."

“They are running the spread offense right now because of Denard (Robinson). But they are bringing in the number one quarterback (Shane Morris) for class of 2013 in few years in my class. So we're going to a more pro style offense at Michigan. They will be using tight ends there. It will be big."

With Michigan having Morris in the fold, Butt says the possibility of catching passes from an elite quarterback is a top selling point.

"Of course, it gives you a level of comfort,” he admitted.  “You know you are coming in with a pro style quarterback," Butt continued. "So you know you are going to be using tight ends. You know there is going to be a spot you can earn.  Nothing is going to be given.  It gives you a level of certainty and I love that. "

Butt compares his game to New England Patriots pro bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski.  Butt said he sees himself as a pass catching red zone target.

"If it hits my hands it is not coming back out, at least that what my coach is telling me," he said confidently.  "No matter what, even if it is one-handed, it's bringing it in for a catch."

As strong as the Wolverines are in this recruitment, Butt said there is no definite decision date on the immediate horizon.

"I'm going to try before the start of next football season,” he said.  “But it is going to depend what my family is doing and everything. So it might be towards the end of the football season. But not anytime soon."

For the complete video interview with Jake Butt, including game highlights of his 30 point scoring outburst, press play below.

if we learned anything from last year, lets pull in as many recruits as early as possible and then hold on to them...  with the limited talent in Michigan this year, I am hoping we can tap into Illinois and get a top 15 class.

Shane Morris is the #1 QB in nation for 2013.

Love all the ohio kids we will get...so much for closed borderes, fences, whatever!

power football will return in 2013, but I expect them to run a little more power this year...  Borges is a little stubborn when it comes to that.

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

February 7, 2012 12:04 pm

I really thought he limited Denard to run, in order to save his body and legs...The injuries hampered him, but he looked great versus ohio.  Although it drove me mad at times, I liked it...You could see the fear in ohios faces when our guys "ounched them in the mouth"..They hadnt seen it since RR got to town. We manhandled them, and the amount of guys carried off proved it!

GO BLUE!!!

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

February 7, 2012 3:24 pm

I like watching the spread offense in college football, but after looking back at RR's tenure I rather it be someone else running it... leave it for Hawaii, Tulsa, WVU, Oregon, Northwestern and other teams running different variations of it...  I am looking forward to going back to tall qb's with cannon arms, to huge and overwhelming offensive lines, to power backs, to big receivers running NFL routes, to dominant defenses... watching Baylor and Washington play that game made me happy that it wasn't us.

Too far ahead for me. I am going to enjoy DRob run the ball this year. He is something special that would have crazy good if he was still in RR's offense. Just hope we don't have to watch him put the ball in the air too much.

Alive, yes. With both legs? Maybe.

I don't understand why a team can't run a spread offense and have a smash-mouth defense. Is it the mentality of the head coach?

Yeah, just like Shutt and Spence...Oh and some guy named Reeves...OK.

There is no fear in 'certain quarters' wrt Dymonte. Fans may quake-n-shake, but the guy who really count are not.

And, it's also perceived as 'only fair' that Dymonte not be totally-forbidden from ohio ... after all, Brionte spent plenty of time in A2 as an OSU commit.

Heck, Dymonte can recruit for Michigan it he's ever there!

So, you can bet U-M will stay on him hard ... but the fear-n-trembling will be left to the fans.

++++++++++

*Wed AM More* This is a point of emphasis really:

The notion that's been attributed to Hoke that "if you're a commit you may not visit elsewhere" is really urban-myth (not Urban, urban). In recruiting every case is different.
In Dymonte's case: "it's also perceived as 'only fair' that Dymonte not be totally-forbidden from ohio ... after all, Brionte spent plenty of time in A2 as an OSU commit."

There are so many variations of the spread but when it comes to RR one thing has always been obvious....he recruits the offensive side of the ball first and gets defense second. That was the rumored reason Casteel didn't come with RR to A2. A falling out and they only rejoined in Arizona after RR realized he can't find anyone to run the 3-3-5 like Casteel, plus Casteel and Holgerson had some friction if you believe what you read on WVU threads.

UofM does not have the season they had with RR as coach. No defense and D Rob would have been exposed to alot more punishment. If D Rob is forced to pass we cringe but it did limit the times he was hit.

Hoke spent alot of time recruiting the trenches and defense. I think we will see alot more of this. A good line will make a 3 star rb look better than a poor line with a 5 star rb. Can't wait to see this class O-line stack up against OSU D-Line in a few years!
