Canuck I feel Iike Syracuse will cut that rotation down in clutch situations or in serious crunch time. Right now their cruising so you can flex and give guys plenty of minutes. Personally in basketball you need a good 8 with a solid big men, shooter and a utlity guy that does the dirty work. Losing dex will hurt when we face small fast guards but on offense we can spread the floor with shooters which will leave henson n Z for some good one n ones with space to move around. Also this will force Barnes to take over and led this team. Also all white has to do is setup plays and make good decisions I also want to say this duke might have found a rotation that brings them more threes and if we don't defend the three better were gonna need all the shooters. In the long run we should be ok now the questions if McDonald comes back or not if we get him back we got a shooter off the bench that can light it up
I agree with some of you regrading the new rotations. I was never a huge fan of Roy's constant substitutions as i always felt that it affected the starters more than it helped the bench players. I for one am looking forward to a smaller rotation and the fact that Harrison Barnes recognizes the team's need for him to take games over when needed-per his post game interview after the VT game. I'll take our srating 5 over any in the country and Roy typically shortens his rotation by mid February. He'll just have to do it a bit sooner now which i think is a positive.
Bench guys now are Hairston, McAdoo, Watts and White.
Roy should tell Watts to NEVER shoot unless open underneath and play physical defense on the 2guards and small forwards plus rebounding. White just needs to keep the ship steady for 3 min a half until Marshall gets a quick blow. Hairston has shown flashes of finishing at the hoop and since he's in a slump needs to drive a bit more to gain confidence. McAdoo needs to play more physical and work on getting second chance points down low. His low post game needs ALOT of work.
I think we will be fine. We lose some defense, but we gain better outside shooting and size. Our team defense was not the attribute that was going to get us into the Final Four anyway. Ole Roy wants to outscore the opponent by running the ball up and down the court. Dex was our fastest man, but as a whole we still have a lot of speed with Hairston at the 2.
Carolina's biggest problem so far this season has been passion. Perhaps THIS is the jolt that the team needs to begin taking thier game to the next level.
Not saying the season is over just that it sucks that we done have him for this year. My concern is who will be our back up PG now. This will hurt us a little. Also he had a good outside shot. That is the one thing marshall isnt good at. Marshall should come back and learn a shot.
My goodness. You'd think Strick was Kenyon Martin breaking his leg before the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
We'll be fine. We obviously lose depth, a key cog on defense and the primary break. It's arguable that any of these things are make or break.
We put Bullock in the starting five, it gives us size, a more efficient shooting start and spreads the court for both the frontcourt and backcourt to work inside the arc. Personally I wanted either Bullock or Hairston to get the start or greater minutes with the starting 5 for just these reasons, of course never at the price of one of our guys health.
I'd say I'm more concerned with how well Stilman White will step up to the challenge. Not that he's all that bad an option but there's a reason Strick was backup point over a true point. And before you say Strick was a true point - no...he was a multipositional wing 2 who could back up at PG when necessary. I think being the backup point actually hurt Strick's game.
Anyhow, I think we will be fine, just give them time to adjust. The 2 is probably the ONLY position we could afford to take this kind of hit and still stay above water. I honestly think we'll be better.
Purguy - Did you know that Marshall lead the starters in 3 point shooting percentage last year? His outside shooting is off a little right now, but he makes up for it by going to the hole more. Your point is taken on the back-up point guard though. That was the first thing I thought of when he went down.
No worries though...we have John Henson to run the point.
Below is a very good piece written on the potential of UNC without Dex. This is exactly why I don't worry about our prospects of winning a title. I love Dex and wish him the best in his recovery, but I am not at all convinced this hurts our chances of getting to the Fnal Four.
This really sucks, he seems like a good kid and he does a lot of the little things that help win championships.
But on the plus side, does anyone else remember what happened the last time a veteran Tar Heel team lost their best defender? Marcus Ginyard went down and 6th man extaordinaire Danny Green stepped in to the starting lineup... they went on to win a title. Obviously this is a bit different because the 2009 team had a tested backup point guard, but still, this isn't necessarily the end of the world.
I wish Dex a speedy recovery and who knows, maybe next season he can help lead us to another title...
