SEC Title run as legit as Barry Bonds 73 home run

January 23, 2012 3:30 pm

Believing the SEC's 6 straight championships is a show of "power and dominance" is about as reasonable as believing Barry Bonds,  Mark McGwire,  Sammy Sossa,  Alex Rodriguez and others had a show of "power and dominance"

Due to the superflicious BCS system that has plagued college football for the past decade,  unfair and many times criminal recruiting,  as well as rampant SEC bias that nearly guarantees a team from that league in every single title game,  the SEC has come away with a steroid era like 6 straight championships.

Please dont tell me you people actually believe SEC teams are that much better then everyone else,  when everyone is playing fairly?  Or even worse,  you actually think kids from the south east are faster,  bigger,  and stronger then kids from anywhere else?  LOL.  Sorry,  but that doesnt happen.  6 straight champions from the same conference from 4 different teams?  Really?  Im suppose to believe it was all legit?

Pete Carroll's little run of dominance?  Who knows how many agents paid off players to help him form his little super teams.  The SEC simply copied the formula.  Either prostituting Cam Newton for $180,000 or buying a Trent Richardson with a $80,000 Caddy with 25" rims.

Again,  the SEC's little title run will be remembered with the same disgust as people have for Baseball's steroid era when its all said and done.

Just try and be ahead of the curb and realize that NOW.

On another note,

So a couple of weeks ago there was a bunch of SEC types saying that defense wins championship and the NFL has proven that

So what do we have in the Superbowl?

DEFENSE

Giants: 27/32 in total defense
Patriots: 31/32 in total defense

OFFENSE

Patriots: 2/32 in total offense
Giants: 8/32 in total offense

Sorry,  but no.

The power of the $ will keep the SEC playing in title games thanks to being in bed with CBS and ESPN,  that alone makes their shot at winning it all 50-50,  which is ridiculous

In part I believe you might be right in a few things you say, the SEC does have some great football teams but this year before the SEC CG they were saying if LSU loses they will still be in the BCSNCG which I find a little bias by even CBS standards. The other was when OSU was playing against Oklahoma they were promoting LSU/Alabama to persuade voters.

Hopefully the low ratings and the current NCAA and BCS meetings will change this soon.

You cannot really fault them.

CBS and ESPN have a direct financial gain from the success of the SEC football programs.

It only stands to reason they would promote their in house products.

I really cannot say that I would behave diffrently and promote my competitors products.

I agree, we should back off and let the Old South at least have something to make them feel better about their low socioeconomic status and poor education.

Ah, good old ignorant northern regional bigotry directed at the south.  It's as old as racism, but not frowned upon as much!

So what do we have in the Superbowl?

Two teams that found defense.   New England went from giving up 21 ppg (Season Stats) to now just 15 ppg (playoff stats).  We went from giving up 411 ypg to 325 ypg.  New York went from giving up 25 ppg to now just 13 ppg.  They went from giving up 368 ypg to 321 ypg.   Nobody won this weekend because of their offensive efficientcy.  My arguement was and still is that a more balanced team will win it more times than not, as proven by the record books.  The teams that lost,  SF and Baltimore, are not even mediocre offenses.  The Giants, now healthy for the first time on D, look like they might win it all against my Patriots.  I just hope our D will find a way to make some opertunistic plays as they did against Balitmore.  We made Flacco look like Peyton out there and Eli will light us up if we play like we did against the Ravens in pass defense.  Run defense was good though!

Last week I pointed out how rediculous some of the Big 12 fans were for creating this stupid idea that what happens in the NFL correlates to what happens in college.  Big 12 fans were the ones trying to spew this nonsense.  Do you actually believe that teams with high powered offenses are the better teams based on that alone.  Thats the arguement they were making.  Not that everyone was equal.  That the high powered offenses were better.  Why is it that in the last 20 years in the NFL only twice has a team with a high powered offense and a low rated defense ever won a championship?  Because every now and then weird things happen.  Only 6 times in the last 20 years has a team with a high powered defense and a low rate offense ever won it as well.  Balance is the answer, but for me the better the D the better your chances.  Thats just my opinion.  16 out of 20 years the Superbowl champ has had a top 10 defense.  13 out of the last 20 years teams had an offense in the top 10.

                         Defense     Offense
2010 Green Bay    - #5           #9
2009 New Orleans - #25          #1
2008 Pitt              - #1          #22
2007 Giants          - #7          #16
2006 Indy            - #21        #3
2005 Pitt              - #4          #15
2004 New England - #9          #7
2003 New England - #7          #17
2002 TB                - #1         #24
2001 New England - #24        #19
2000 Baltimore     - #2         #16
1999 St Louis       - #6          #1
1998 Denver       - #11          #3
1997 Denver       - #5           #1
1996 Green Bay   - #1          #5
1995 Dallas         - #9          #5
1994 SF             - #8           #2
1993 Dallas        - #10         #4

No. a couple weeks ago Big 12 types were saying that Green Bay and New Orleans prove that offense wins championships. Now that both those teams lost, you are scrambling to find new teams to carry the banner.

By the way, it's pretty interesting how the Giants suddenly went on a tear after a 9-7 season once their defense got healthy.

It is only ignorant if it is not factual, since my statements about the low socioeconomic status and poor education in the Old South is factual then all of a sudden "northern regional bigotry" becomes "the truth hurts" :)

No, it what it is. Any time a southern person or institution or team becomes successful at something, people like yourself, who want to assume all southerners are ignorant rednecks, feel obliged to make a dumb comment about the south being stupid in order to make yourself feel better. Your comments are very reminiscent of comments made by racists trying to justify treating a whole race of people like second class citizens: "Well look they really are inferior." Take a hard look in the mirror; if you're honest you won't like what you see.

SEC Title run as legit as Barry Bonds 73 home run

January 23, 2012 4:53 pm

I think theres a few different factors in play with this SEC run.  I think any conference is just as guilty as the SEC or PAC 12 when it comes to recruiting violations.  I think another reason may be that players with NFL talent are convinced that playing in a conference that promotes an NFL style offense and has such huge media coverage will help get them noticed and up their draft value. And defensively there are just a couple coaches in the SEC with close ties to the nfl that do a good job managing personel and gameplanning, so again maybe a player that likes texas or Oklahoma chooses Auburn or bama or lsu bc they think it will help them get into the NFL.  But I think every year other conferences are gaining ground.  OSU, Oregon, Washington Texas are playin these sec teams hard and I think there is bound to be a shift in power.  I definitely agree with your points and the SEC certainly holds some favoritism in the rankings but I think next year could be the year where these powerhouses get knocked off their pedestals.  Dish out 1 or 2 losses to these big sec teams and it wont be an issue!!  I personally dont like sec games outside of arkansas mainly cuz i much prefer college ball to pro and the sec title game and BCS game were terribly unexciting in my mind.  By the way les miles loses credibility in my mind for playing jefferson not just in the title game but at all.  The guy is an undersized rb with a decent arm.  He was a non factor in every big game this year unless you count his negative impact.  Terrible decision making, can't read progressions AT ALL, and didn't do anything that makes me understand why a coach would think he was the best option for that team. He is like a brokeass jamarcus russel.

The only legitimate titles would be where there were only 2 undefeated teams left to play in the NCG and they actually played each other in the NCG with the winner being the NC.

Everything else is pretty much just a beauty contest.

If you aren't one of these "ignorant rednecks" then my comments didn't have anything to do with you since I was talking about the average southerner.

Yes it has to do with me because you are continuing an unfair sterotype that gets brought up in every discussion about the south.  I don't agree with the tone my fellow Alabama poster used, so I understand you responding in a sarcastic way, but why do you feel the need to point out education and economics on a thread where somebody is talking about football championships?
