The Farmer's Insurance Open

January 23, 2012 7:41 pm

Welcome to Torrey Pines North and South courses home of The Farmer's Insurance Open. The two courses of Torrey Pines sits next to the Pacific Ocean that offer pristine views of the Pacific but what was Torrey Pines before it was a golf course. Back in the 1940's it was Camp Callen an artillery training camp after WWII ended the camp was sold to the city of San Deigo which razed the buildings but left the streets. In 1951 it became Torrey Pines Race Course a 2.7 mile course in which sports cars and grand prix racers competed.  The track started somewhere near the eigth green of the south course, continued north then turned left (across what is todays sixth fairway) on a loop that headed to the ocean and then away from it east down the first fairway of the North course. Two right turns had the track heading south into a long straightaway which today is a practice range, parking lots, the Torrey Pines Lodge and a Hilton hotel. The final loop crossed somewhere through the ninth and fifthteenth holes and back to the start finish line. In January 1956 the last race was ran before the track became the two courses of Torrey Pines and the last winner of that race was a guy named Woods. Pearce that is. So who has the horsepower to tame the two tracks of Torrey Pines and win the Farmer's Insurance Open.

For those interested, Kerplookee leagues are starting. We have a league there and it is free to join the league name is Ex CBSer's. If you're interested in joining just go to the site and join the league. The Farmer's Insurance Open this week is a practice round to familiarize all with the format. There are weekly, segment and overall prizes available. The real season starts the following week with the Waste Management Open. For those that had a team last year that team remains intact for this year. Hope to see ya there.

Dutch, another fine intro for this weeks event. I did not realize Torre Pines was once a race track and can now say I have learned something for the day.

Not to scare anybody away (because of my blazing start in yahoo golf) but I will be playing in the Kerplookee league. The format is different from Yahoos, but interesting none the less. Plus (and most importantly) they give out weekly prizes so I can double my chance of fulfilling the dream.

The Farmer's Insurance Open

January 24, 2012 1:56 pm

Another informative intro Dutch as we've come to a tournament I played in the early 80's when it was the Andy Williams.  I, like VC, didn't realize it had been a race track.  My most notable memory of Torrey Pines was a bunch of nudists on the beach as you played a couple of holes right along the cliff!  Good luck to all in the pick'ems and as usual it's good to see the odds provided by Noko for your information!

I bet he'll say the course scenery was "bushy" and the terrain was "undulating."  He'll say the players all had "old bags" and not one of the holes was worthy of using a "wood" on.

Aramis there's no way I can inprove on that description!!  Laughing  All I can say is there was a nice enough view that a number of folks in golf carts were lined up along that cliff subsequently it took considerably longer to finish those holes!! Surprised

noko, thanks much for the odds!  I was about to try to dig them up on the Internet myself.  I can easily get the US odds, but the Euro ones are sometimes a pain.

I am boycotting watching any coverage of the Farmer's Insurance Open, because they would not give a spot to John Daly.  Say what you will about him, he is a past champion of this tournament, and that should be enough to get him in.

I hope no one goes to the event, and given the PGA's big downfall in gate attendance and TV ratings, it serves them right to dig their own grave.

Jimmy, that day you played Torrey,  did you say what your score was?  Probably the worst you had ever shot!  Knowing your "REP", I doubt if you could even find your ball, if you did in fact hit the fairways/and or greens.  LOL Wink
