Robinson will stay...

January 27, 2012 9:02 pm

I think.  Well J. Ellis wrote this and at first I thought we are in cap hell but it looks as if we are the top 3rd in cap room.
That's the reason why Robinson stays in addition to getting a quality back-up and a free agent defensive player.

Enjoy.

When they were figuring their salary cap future last summer, the Cowboys expected things to be even tighter in 2012 than they were in 2011.

That changed a bit when they made somewhat unexpected moves to release Andre Gurode and Igor Olshansky before the season started. All the cap space they saved in 2011 can be rolled over into 2012.

"We've done an outstanding job. I give Stephen (Jones) a lot of credit," Jerry said of his son, the team's director of player personnel, <span style="color: #0000ff;">at the Senior Bowl this week. "This is a year, we thought it would be Armageddon for us - this year. But we were able to do some things with the cap that gives us a chance to have some room to improve this team this year. And we will use it."

The Cowboys will carry roughly $28 million in dead money on this year's cap, the remainder of prorated bonuses for guys like Leonard Davis, Roy Williams and Marion Barber. Still, the team has money to spend, and can create even more room by releasing cornerback Terence Newman, a move that is widely aticipated, and through a few other strokes of their pen.

They expect to be completely out of cap hell by next year, with very little dead money projected for 2013, but should still have around $20 million to spend on this year alone.

The same is true for a lot of other teams, though. The Cowboys are currently in the top half of the league in terms of cap space, and could easily jump into the top third, but will still be well behind some other teams.

Kansas City leads the league in money to spend, currently projected at some $63 million below the salary cap for 2012. Tampa Bay is right there as well, after they found few takers in free agency last season.

So while the Cowboys will be able to do pretty much whatever they want in free agency, just know that they're not the only ones.

Let's hope Laurent Robinson stays, he is the only consistent receiver  of the starting three. Miles Austin is either hurt or inconsistant in his play, and Dez Bryant dissapears way to often. IMO Jerry jumped the gun on Austin's big contract, but that's what Jerry does. Have to keep Robinson somehow.

Crazy AV CBz&Beer.  We need Robinson bc he just works well here.

I believe we are one player away from a dominant defense if that player is playing opposite of Ware.

I dont care if he's our draft pick or a vet.  I know that the 3/4 needs a solid rush to be effective and Spencer was just good but not great.

We need a great player in his place.

Laurent Robinson's agent thinks client is a big target

Wide receiver Laurent Robinson will become an unrestricted free agent on March 13 opening his services to the highest bidder. In 2011, Robinson led the Cowboys with 11 touchdown receptions and became a trusted target for quarterback Tony Romo.

During one stretch, Robinson caught a touchdown pass in five consecutive games.

With depth lacking at wide receiver behind Miles Austin and Dez Bryant, the Cowboys have a tremendous need to take care of Robinson long-term.

But Robinson might be a highly-sought after receiver from several teams in need of a quick receiver with good hands.

"I would hope so," Robinson's agent Harold Lewis said Tuesday morning. "He's got the age, height, speed and people can see what he can do."

Robinson has made a point that he wants to return to Dallas and the feeling is mutual.

The Cowboys currently have $12.5 million under the salary cap and that number will increase with the restructuring of several contracts and the releasing of several players. If the Cowboys release veteran cornerback Terence Newman, the team could save as much at $4 million.

But there are no guarantees Robinson will return.

"We think the receiver position is a strength for us," Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said last week from the Senior Bowl. "We've got a couple of young guys that we're proud of, too. I'm really appreciative of what [Robinson] brought to us this year. He had a real outstanding year."

Great info Samson...but it's scary to see his agent trying to build him up, I mean it's his job...but we know Jerry and how he'll throw big money leaving less to sign other big needs.  I hope Laurent Robinson stays obviously because with Dez being doubled, Romo could usually depend on him getting open.  I just hope they can agree on a reasonable amount with so many needs on defense....

This is an Alvin Harper situation all over again. Robinson was a non-entity at every other stop in his career, and fell into a perfect situation in Dallas. We've got money under the cap to bring him back at a reasonable (and an even more-than-reasonable) price, but if someone thinks he's a budding #1 WR and pays him as such (like Tampa Bay did with Harper), we'll have to walk.

Axe,

I can appreciate th' throw-back Alvin Harper analogy. It definitely fits the situation with the potential signing of WR Laurent Robinson.

It appears that Robinson is th' beneficiary of a system that fits his skill set. That happens all of th' time in th' NFL. Why some people are averse to that reality is beyond me.

If his agent is unwilling to convince Laurent of that reality, he may become th' next proverbial, multimillion-ducat, free-agent bust. Funny thing about history, it is often very TELLIN'! There is a very good reason why Mr. Robinson may have been pedestrian at every other stop...irreconcilable systems!

I hope that JJ is not too enamored with his one-year performance that he falls into the overzealous trap of throwin' too much money at him to keep in th' starred helmet! While I really like what Miles has accomplished, thus far, in Big D, his long-term deal appears to have been a bit prematured, as well.

Great analogy!

I agree. Thing is, if you're a player, you're always going to have the mind-set that you're great or you're becoming great, even when you're not.

Hell, look at Larry Brown. He was a nice #2 CB...but after SB XXX, the Raiders threw money at him like he was a budding superstar. And ya know what? I can't blame Brown (or Alvin Harper) for following the money.

Yep...accent on the "multi-million ducat" part. Think it'd really bother Robinson if he turned back into a pumpkin but was able to pocket $35 million for his trouble...?

Agree...but I also hope Jerry doesn't cut off his nose to spite his face, either. Robinson was a great fit for us, and given Austin's recent injuries and Bryant's knuckle-headedness, we really could use Robinson back.

With Laurent Robinson has to be with the Cows next year.  He more than proved his worth and seems to have a good connection with Tony Romo.  With Dez Bryant still learning to play at the NFL level, we need a sure fire threat at receiver to help open up the field for the Cow's offense.  Hopefully bill Callahan will lobby to keep Robinson on the Cowboys depth chart.

Just wonder who the "young players" are that Jerry is referring to?  I'm hoping he doesn't pull an Al Davis and get stuck on the tangibles...size and speed.  From what I've read, they sound enamored with Andre Holmes and I don't think that chicken has hatched yet.

As th' players are oft to say, "It ain't personal; it is a biz-ness (i.e.,th' NFL)."

When Larry Brown made hay at th' expense of Big Al, Laurent wasn't a blip on th' ovarian radar screen, but I am certain that he has read th' clippin's! If he hasn't, his agent certainly has! SHOW ME TH' MONEY!

So what is Robinson worth?

3 year deal worth 21?

12 guaranteed?

Maybe a hit of 4-5 million this next year.

Hows that sound?

At least we've seen Radway play.  He earned a little respect.  Holmes sounds like a pet project at 6'5" and 4.5 sec 40.  Talk about Alvin Harper.

Damn good question. I'm not sure what Dallas views as "fair" compensation for Robinson.

My heart sunk a bit when I got my latest issue of Star Magazine -- in Jeff Sullivan's column, he believes that some team will just throw a "ridiculous" contract at Robinson.

Someone else on this board (maybe Samson?) said the same thing and I kind of poo-poo'd it. Whoever that was, my apologies -- I may have dismissed that possibility to soon.

yeah - I think it was him too; then I agreed just saying, NOTHING in the NFL will surprise me anymore.
Jerry Jones, Danny Snyder, etc... or some hot shot GM trying to get his team over the hump..

Some team with a young QB who needs to toss some weapons his way (Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, Andy Dalton).

The 49ers were a WR/PR away from the SB this year with that defense and running game...

Point is Axe, you just NEVER know, what's on someone else mind lol.

No, you never do!  I guess I want to cling to the belief that NFL execs are on the ball, can accurately gauge talent, can accurately determine a player's worth, and for the vast majority of the time they do.

But then you see things that make you do a double-take -- like the contracts for Larry Brown, Alvin Harper...

I remember years ago when Rick Mirer (remember him?!?) had pretty much established he was a substandard NFL quarterback...and then the Bears dealt a #1 pick for him! One of the guys in our FFL league is from Chicago and is a Bears fan and we all razzed him -- because we KNEW (and the Bears GM didn't!) that Mirer was a lousy QB.

The Cowboys can not afford to overspend on Laurent Robinson.   We have too much money on the offensive side of the ball.  Our problems are on defense and have made our bed with Miles and Dez (not saying that is not righ risk), but the reality is that we have greater needs.  Hope Jerrah does not become enamored with another toy after just one year.

The more I think about it, the more I am starting to feel like the Cowboys shouldn't go out of their way to match any huge offers this guy might recieve during free agency.  The team is in the shape it is in now because of guys performing well for one or two years, usually in a contract year or at a position that couldn't afford to be thin at, so they got paid and then started playing like we all probably should have seen coming.  Robinson hasn't been a success up to this point in his career, to the point where he has been afforded numerous opportunities to prove himself and has ended up cut.  I absolutely loved what he did for us this year, but what about next year?  Can we afford to be wrong?  Again?

The reality of the situation is this.  We already have "our guys" in Miles and Dez.  Robinson came to a team with above average talent at every recieving position on offense and shined when teams didn't gameplan to stop him.  At best, right or wrong, he's our # 3 guy and you have to argue this; whats more important: #3 wide reciever (whom we may or may not have to overpay) or a STARTING safety/STARTING cb/STARTING pass rusher/STARTING guard/STARTING center/STARTING d lineman?  I understand the importance of the #3 guy, but if someone can make the argument that this position is more important to address than any of the positions I mentioned, I would be open to hearing it.

With that being said, I like what we had with him.  His connection with Romo was fantastic at a time when we needed it.  I don't know what the salary cap looks like, I don't want to know, I care about only what entertains me.  However, if it were possible, I would even like to know how much it would hurt our cap for next year to franchise tag the guy.  It makes more sense to me to pay him one large sum that is too much than to screw the cap up for the next 5 year for an even larger sum that is too much.  It also makes sense to see if he repeats his success, if Dez comes into his own, if Miles can stay healthy and earn his contract, etc.
