UNC vs. GT Gamme Thread

January 29, 2012 10:10 am

Sorry for the delay in posting.  I had to shovel the driveway this morning.  Why do I live in Illinois?  I hate snow.

North Carolina hasn't beaten Georgia Tech in nearly three years, but appears to have a good chance to end that drought this weekend.  North Carolina (17-3, 4-1) has dropped four straight to Georgia Tech since a 104-74 home victory Feb. 28, 2009, but enters Sunday with some momentum. Since losing 90-57 at Florida State on Jan. 14, the Tar Heels have won their last two games by a combined 33 points.

North Carolina should prove too much to handle for Georgia Tech (8-12, 1-5). The Yellow Jackets, tied for last in the ACC with Virginia Tech, have dropped eight of nine and are trying to avoid their first five-game skid of the season.

ESPNU will televise the game nationally. Jon Sciambi (play-by-play), Hubert Davis (analyst) and Allison Williams (reporter) will have the call.

UNC surely remembers last year's game and I predict they will be seeking some revenge.  I see UNC winning this one by 25, and then thanking GT for last year's end result of Larry Drew II transferring.  Looking back on this game last year, that was certainly a blessing in disguise.

GO HEELS!!!

Yes, UNC should win this game.  They should win this game by 20+ points.  The thing is, this is a pure mental game.  Will Roy and the players be too careful and not play their game?  If they fall to the metal part, they will have a hard time today.

GT is not a push over, just not consistant.  They have had the mental edge over the last few years.  We need to regain that edge over GT and the rest.   The FSU game was our head check for this year, no need for another.

Im gonna be greedy. I dont just want a W. I want our Heels to DOMINATE this game, in impressive fashion. I want to see Barnes light up. I want to see Henson swatting shots.. I want atleast 90 points. Its not gonna be enough to just beat this team. We gotta win by a lot. Some top teams have been losing.. and barely winning games (Dook against terrible St. Johns).. I want our boys to send a message.. No more sleepwalking or playing down to other teams' levels. Lets get this season going!..Then beat up on Wake and Maryland to prepare for Dook coming to town!!...UNC: 94  GT: 67

I don't see this game being close either. After losing to GT everytime since 2009 I think we have a beat down in store for them tonight. I think how bad we blow them out depends on how well we defend Glen Rice Jr. or how hot he is tonight. Rice is a good player and can put up some big numbers if he is feeling it but hot or not I think we win by atleast 20. I really love the way Zeller has been playing here lately with his strength and size. I don't know what happened to him but the last three games he has looked like a different player then from the start of the season.

I also want to continue to see minutes for Hairston, McAdoo, Hubert, and White to keep developing them and get them going. McAdoo and Hairston are do for a big game and maybe tonight is the game where they get things going. I was also pretty inpressed with the good minutes Hubert gave us off the bench last game. If he can continue to rebound and defend he could help us down the road in certain situations this year. I think we win this one 91 to 63 and start a nice win streak against GT like they had been doing to us. I'm having to tape the game tonight since I have church at 6 but I will be looking forward to seeing the game and what everyone thought about it later tonight. Go Heels !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crystal Lake - I hate it for you.  My dad lived in Crystal Lake for 10 years.  Pretty town, but the winters were BRUTAL.  I had to cook dinner tonight so I DVR'd the game and just got finished watching it.

We were great from 3 tonight and IMO, Stillman White is a better PG than Watts.  Not sure what happened defensively in the 2nd half, but Ga. Tech got hot and we couldn't sustain the defensive effectiveness.  Nonetheless, I will take the "W" and look forward to going to Wake and destroying them on Wednesday.

As usual, Marshall was awesome.  12-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.  Henson had some great passes too.  This might be the best all around passing team the Heels have ever had.  Everyone looked like Majic Johnson tonight...except for Watts, that is.

Good game by the BOYS tongiht....I was very pleased to see how well we shot the ball and the number of overall team assists. These guys are clicking right now and playing with purpose. Credit to GT for not giving up or else this would have been a 30 pt blowout. Also happy to see McAdoo show some assertiveness and work on his low post game. Still needs work but he is learning to play faster and leaving his feet quicker to the hoop- a good sign indeed. I can see every single player taking their game to the next level. I fully expect an easy win In Winston-Salem on Tuesday.....The ONLY negative at this point is free throw shooting. I've resigned that this team simply isn't a good free throw shooting team at all. If we were, 20pt leads would be 30....Heels looking more and more like a contender!!!  Keep it up!!!!!

A nice Carolina win expected and delivered.   I don’t think we’ll win a 20 point game with Roy’s substation pattern. With the game in hand we will play as many players to continue their development.  Our starters finish a game making a 20 point win becoming a 10 point win.

What was the technical against Coach tonight?

I think Coach likes all our players as many minutes, thus a 20 point lead becomes a 10 point win.  This does not mean that a starter comes out for breather as in the first half but comes out for another player to get more playing time. Having the game won he won’t embarrass another team.

Evey Carolina win our first half has more points than the second half as tonight.  I remember the last Championship Game against Michigan State with 50 plus points in the first half and a huge lead.  We played them even in the second half with all our players getting to play with a 20+ win.

The exception being dook, because they love to run up the score against us.  Then disregard everything I’ve written above.

GO CAROLINA – GO TO HELL dook

A great win by the Heels. The final score was not a good indicator as to how dominant the Heels were. GT hit some 3's down the stretch and Roy took the 'ol foot of the gas early. All in all, a nice game from everyone. Bullock continues to impress providing O where Strickland just simply couldn't. I hate it for Dex, he's such a nice guy. Glad to see him in good spirits from the bench.

Was it just me or were the coaches wearing sneakers? Don't they do that in Honor of Coaches Vs. Cancer? I swear the announcers never mentioned it once. Pretty sad if you ask me. ESPN dropped the ball on that one...

Good win as expected.  The first half, Marshall was unstoppable.  UNC did seem to let up defensively in the second half.  I realize it is tough to keep the intensity when the lead is so big, so it doesn't bother me too much.  UNC answered GT any time it got down to 14 pts or so.  My only other observation is that the team seemed to fall a little bit into a street ball mode in the second half.  Guys were trying to make the fancey pass and be a bit more flashy than they should be.  You can get away with that against GT, but they need to be careful with that stuff.

So far, I think Stillman White has held up pretty well and Bullock seems to be thriving in the starting line-up.  McAdoo seems to be coming around also.  Hairston got a little more aggressive and didn't settle for all 3's.

Things are looking good, but the real test comes against Duke.  Hopefully, the Heels don't look past the next two, though.

Good win!!! Came out w/intensity and looked ready to play. GT was overmatched but we weren't going to let them get a W on us this time around. Can you believe they beat us 4 straight? Great game for about 38 mins. then the "scrubs" come in and poof, GT makes a little run. I was wanting "biscuits".  Oh well, a W is a W. Wake Forest, here we come!

Good win. Score was a lot closer in the end than the game indicated with Roy clearing the bench. I actually expected more from GT but I wont take anything away from our guys yesterday.

This is the type of game I want to see from here on out. 54% from the field and especially the 62% from the arc! We just need our perimeter D to step up just a hair. Personally I dont have an issue with the increase in points against without Strick...looks like Tarheels basketball to me.

I like that McAdoo is finding a comfort zone and attacking the basket. He is not a bust by far...just needs to find his role until we clear more space in the rotation. Definitely think he needs to work on his midrange game...could be an x factor. Even Stillman White plays a good part in bringing us a decent perimeter shooter in his short minutes. There was a short span where we had no true point on the floor with most of the starters and it was absolute chaos. Here's to keeping our points healthy through the finish.

One thing I am noticing is that we can be a lot more dangerous than we are now, especially with better shooters on the floor. There's a regular moment when we set up in half court where the guards feed Henson or Zeller on the block, then clear the side out for an iso. If Roy would have the off post guy set a screen for Barnes or Bullock to streak under the basket or have one of the guards screen over the top in the same mannor for a pull up 3, I would green light that shot any day of the week.

Good win I'm happy we're hitting threes because we will news those down the road with you know who. I'm sorry but I'm loving bullock at the shooting guard position he bring height offense and hustle plays. It spreads the floor give looks for Barnes and now our Biggs can tee off because guards can dip down in the paint to help defend. 10-2 run combine with Roy not trying to put 120 on the jackets is why the score look like that. This team is rolling and clicking keep it up fellas stay hungry and lets do work this spring. Ps I like white to get the minutes when Marshall needs a rest

UNC looked like a legit national championship threat for 30 minutes.  3 balls were dropping all over for the guys.  Defensively they were probably more active than I've seen all year.  Zeller has found his groove.  I loved seeing McAdoo hit some shots and wow!.... Reggie was sensational all the way around.  Game ball last night goes to Barnes.  Solid effort offensively, but even better effort defensively against Rice Jr.  The last 10 minutes were somewhat of a disappointment, but Roy was subbing a little more than normal to experiment.  i guess Watts is being used in practice at the 1 some.  I didn't see much last night, but at least he didn't turn the ball over.  That's all we need is an emergency plan.  Stilman is now the fan favorite.  The fans love him and how can you not.

I agree with Blackflag and a lot of others in saying that Bullocks has really impressed me as a starter. The guy has a pretty jumpshot from deep, and plays very good defense. Im almost at the point of wondering why he wasnt starting from the beginning. Of course we all liked Dex, but the guy isnt a good shooter. From what I have seen, Bullocks has been just as good defensively, and can also score in transition. Plus, he's what?, 6'6 or 6'7... I have seeen his name on every NBA mock draft I have seen, so obviously this kid is a special player. I love having a 6'7 guy in there instead of 6'2 Dex.. Definitely wasnt glad to see Dex get hurt, but I think we're better with Reggie at the 2, with PJ spelling him. Blessing in disguise??

Stillman is doing a good job in Marshall's relief. Not turning the ball over, and WOW actually hitting some 3s!.. I see a few Heels fans here didnt care much for Watts as Point Guard.. He didnt really make any great passes, but I thought he looked smooth with his handles, so I say Coach Roy keeps experiementing there. Watts is 6'5 and a better defender and scorer than White, so I wouldnt mind seeing him at the 1 more often, in case Marshall happens to experience foul trouble in the tourney.

I was actually 50/50 on McAdoo's game. I liked his more aggressive attitude.. He hit the boards very well.. I just think he still goes up too weak with his shots..And he tends to fade away from the bucket instead of going up strong and initiating contact. I may be knitpicking there..But I really did like his intensity and Im sure he's gonna keep getting better, which is huge for our title hopes.
