Even though they made a valiant comback to get the game to OT, make no mistake this was a bad loss. I think Turgeon got a pretty quick hook and I think that he would have made a difference at the end, but this game was right there to be won. It was los by the abysmal shooting of Howard and Mosely, and Len's poor positioning and inabilty to rebound against smaller guys. Each time MD had the opportunity to take a lead at the end of each ending, they threw up shots that had no chance. It was a fun game to watch, but there was no reason to lose it with 3 of Miami's starters on the bench almost the entire 2OT. Part of the reason I am sure is that MD was dog tired at the end due to not going as deep as Miami, and after 3 guys foul out you have to get some fresch legs in there I guess. This one could have been a program changer and quality win to shoot for a NIT bid, but now it is simply a L.
There are moral victories, but this is not one of them. This should be a long plane ride home. Sorry but this one stings to come that close and then just stop doing what got you the come back and go back to trading possessions and waiting too long ot make something happen. I do think this should give them confidence that they can beat this team when they come to MD, which I also had as a L. This could be win #6 at home.
Man I'm just too flabbergasted to post much. Did anyone see exactly what got Turg ejected. Was it a bad call on the charge? Geez hope this one didn't take the wind out of their sails for the NC game. Whew.
I told myself I wouldn't let it happen this year because of the inexperience on the team, but boy was I mad last night. There were dumb charging calls all night. Some of them our guys just flat ran over there guys and after that I think they got the benefit of doubt because it didn't look like we trying very hard to avoid it. Not sure about the particular call that got him tossed but there was plenty to not be happy about. The hook was a little quick but then I couldn't tell exactly what he was saying. The team responded well, but in crunch time, when you need your coach for that one or two plays, or that one or two substitutions, or to make sure who gets the shot or handles the ball, etc., we didn't have one.
81, I couldn't agree with you more about being mad last night! I would rather Maryland lose by 16 then fight all the way back just to lose in double overtime. Too many times this team just plain forgets to play 2-3 min of D right before half. The NC ST game and the Miami game were lost because they stopped playing D right before halftime.
What in the world can I say about Stoglin? I told my gf he would tie the game up with a three and he sure did. But time and time again he throws the ball up just to brick so BADLY the other teams runs out in transistion for an easy lay up for wide open three point shot. Maryland would of lost that game before overtime if fatty mcfat fat Johnson didn't foul out. Also, how many times can fatty mcfat fat walk with the ball? Did you see him flop and try to take a charge on stick figure Len? That was too funny!
This UNC game on Saturday could end up pretty bad, Or it could actually be close! I think this loss really hurt the team and it might be the straw the broke the camels back. I hope that's not the case and they keep fighting.
I am glad to have Stoglin otherwise this team is unwatchable. It is becoming clear that the reason Faust stayed when the others bailed after Gary's retirement is that he did not have anywhere better to go. So far he is inconsistant at best, and simply not very good at worst. Hopefully Stoglin gets a little more discipline when and if the Terps have a few more weapons and the game plan changes some next year with Shaq and Len in the middle with some pretty good extra big men in Pankey and Padgett.
The one thing that scares me is that this team has no real PG. Howard is the best we have, but he gtes the the ball straight out stolen from him way to often because he dribbles too far in before beginning to set up a play. HE waits too long to make the pass as well. you have to run the play, and trust the play. If you wait until the play develops, the defense has a chance to react and then you have to make the perfect pass or havea a turnover which he has far too many of.
Oh the rest of thought was that we also did not recruit a true PG for next year so we need to teach one in Foust or Howard who are both converted PG's.
Correct on the D lapses...happened against Fl St, Duke, Temple...a close game then all of a sudden the opponent goes on 12-0 run. Last night it was 44-43 then bam its 55-43 or something at half. Then after that we trade baskets...game over. Last night was a great comeback but the game was really lost in that 2 minutes before half IMO.
