Other Options At QB - I.E. NFL Rookie QB's?

January 30, 2012 9:53 am

Hey Guys,

Okay, lets put the talk of Luck and RG3 to the side for now. Lets say that Luck goes #1 and RG3 goes to the Browns at #4. So we're out of the running for both.

So forgetting for now that we went after Flynn, Orton or whoever in FA, who do you guys like after the top 2 QB's are gone. Is there anyone that you'd like to see the skins draft?

Here's the top 5 guys according to Mike Mayock:

Luck
RGIII
Tannehil
Weeden
Foles

I person think that Russell Wilson has to be mentioned in there. If the guy was 6-2 or taller, he'd be in the top 3. The guy just makes plays. He's just to short at 5:11 or whatever he is.

Neither Foles nor Weeden impressed me much in the Senior bowl. Of course, they were throwing to Wr's etc that they had very little experince with, but they still didn't impress me.

I have heard that Tannehil is very good, but haven't watched much of him.

Anyway, after Luck and RGIII, who do you guys like the most? Who fits the Redskins offense the best?

Russell Wilson and Kellen Moore both looked pretty bad to me during the Senior Bowl and the practices leading up to the game so I'd count them out first off.

Foles wasn't overly impressive either but he has all the physical tools to be a good QB in the NFL, so possibly him in the 2nd or 3rd.  Weeden is just to old, he will be 29 when the season starts and unless he can come right in a be a good quality starting QB then I wouldn't take him until the 4th round or later.

Tannehill, not much to base anything off of since I never watched him play in school and he is now out with the foot injury.  I'll have to wait and see how he does at his pro day and the combine before I make a judgement.  I've watched a few youtube videos on him though and there are probably more highlights of him as a WR than at QB so he's obviously athletic but that sometimes doesn't translate well in the NFL, as of right now he reminds me of a Matt Jones type guy.

Now the guy who is kind of intriguing to me is Brock Osweiler, someone was talking about him on another thread and his size is just overwhelming, I mean who wouldn't want an athletic 6'8" QB? If he's available when we pick in the 2nd or 3rd I would take a good long look at him.

Ultimately I still want us to trade up and get Griffin but sometimes things don't work out and if that is the case I'd look to go after Kyle Orton and Osweiler and take a chance maybe with Russell Wilson in the 5th round or later.

every team in the league.  see Dan McGwire, Mark's younger brother was a big 6'8 athletic specimen who was too long for the NFL.  Much like Byron Leftwich,

You know my take on this subject. We will endure Rex Grossman for another year and take Tannehill. Peyton Manning is more than likely going to the Jets and Tony Romo will have another sub-par year and be delegated to second string by november. Fat Andy will lose his job mid-stream and our Redskins will finish second in out division. Behind the Giants of course.

Tannehill is a scoring fool with and arm. He's also (not as good as) Like Tim Tebow out of the pocket. The man can flat out run. And to the likings of Mr. Big, he's a white guy. Texas A&M had a sub par defense and they lost games like 48-52. Excuse me, but if you score that high, you're supposed to win. And this was not just one game. The man has a knack to get into the end zone. I seriously hope we get this QB over all others.

Good post and highly likely your scenario may play out.  Grew up in Cleveland and still have alot of friends there.  Lot of public outcry to get a "faceman" for the organization.  However; the Browns have so many holes to fill they may be willing to move out of that spot to pick up early round draft choices.  Having 2 in the 1st round makes them moving from #4 very likely.  Rumor has they are asking for a 1st, 3rd and a 1st and 4th in 2013.  Gosh, that is just a HEFTY price tag

I'd be all for moving out of their current spot to move down 3-4 spots, draft Malcolm Floyd (assuming we do not acqure any WR free agents this offseason) or Tannehill with that spot.  I do think Tannehill at pick 6 is pre-mature however the Dolphins make that move if they don't trade witht the Browns to RGIII

I do see some teams mid round that would have serious interest to move up and get Trent Richardson (AKA Dallas Cowboys, NYJ)

Lots to play out in next few months including pre draft workouts

I'll help beat some of this dead horse...
The good thing is if we draft Tannehill and he doesn't work out at QB (say...he show's Tebowesque type passing) he could try out for WR.  We need to get rid of all the scrubs like Anthony Armstrong who can only catch the ball when the stars align.  I don't care if they're fast...they need to catch the damn ball.  It's bad when Jabar Gaffney is your leading reciever in all categories...not saying he's bad at all, but he's not really a threat either.

Man, you Fantasy guys are just that. Look at Football like a business for a moment. The Redskins addressed the Defense last year and there are still holes. They need to address the Ofdfense this year and yes, there will still be holes.
Peyton Manning may very well be heading to the Jets. And I'll tell you why. Little brother is in N.Y. (And about to get  another ring) And the Jets have a far better chance with their defense to beat the Patriots with Manning at the helm than Sanchez. It's a one year deal, but I would suspect he woulod sit for a year and learn from Manning.

As far as the Redskins and Sexy Rexy go.. I can see as soon as Tannehill is ready to go he will be in the game. But I would expect him as a starter no later than week 6.  Thats just my take on things.

I pray to god that we don't ever get Mark Sanchez,
i dont think we do get him, BUT if the Jets do sign Manning, then i think it's possible. the Redskins wanted to draft him and he does seem to fit the bootleg system that Shanahan likes, BUT like i said, DONT worry, i dont see Sanchez leaving NY and i dont see Manning going to NY, the only Manning in NY will likely still be Eli.
The Redskins addressed the Defense last year and there are still holes. They need to address the Ofdfense this year and yes, there will still be holes.
they need a CB on defense and likely a LB to replace Fletcher before he retires and maybe a safety. on offense, we do need a WR, but it's not as big as CB or QB, QB is our BIGGEST need in my book.
Peyton Manning may very well be heading to the Jets. And I'll tell you why. Little brother is in N.Y. (And about to get  another ring) And the Jets have a far better chance with their defense to beat the Patriots with Manning at the helm than Sanchez.
i just cant see this happening and the reason is i dont see Peyton Manning wanting to go to this team. Peyton Manning doesnt seem to fit what the Jets locker room style is. they like to run their mouths and talk, Peyton doesnt seem like he's that kind of guy.
It's a one year deal, but I would suspect he woulod sit for a year and learn from Manning.

if Manning did go to the Jets, then i do think Sanchez is released. i dont see Ryan going from Manning to Sanchez after a year, my guess is if they do get Manning, they sign him to a 3 year deal, likely draft a QB in round 2 and have that guy learn from Manning.

Well, I'm here in Indiana and I can tell you for a fact that Peyton Manning has been doing some Jaw Jacking. Irsay even said, "Peyton needs to realise this isn't Fantasy Football, This is a business".

he's been talking, but i think it's more on the fact that he knows he's leaving and just saying truthful things, but Peyton isnt one who will say "we will win the Super Bowl" or one who will trash talk with Brady throughout the week. not that Sanchez does, but Manning seems to have less of a mouth than the rest of the Jets. plus, i dont think New York is a good place for him, i still think Miami is the best fit for him because he will have a RB with potential, a good WR, good line and if Miami doenst lose a any picks for Manning, then they can draft a WR like Floyd or Jeffery in round one and pair him with Marshall, then get a QB of the future in round 2.

Hmmm how did we go from talking about other rookie QB options to people getting all bent out of shape over what others have posted? lol

BTW I don't want Peyton Manning here. He might very well come back and be 100% healthy, but one really good hit and he's done. I'd much rather spend the money on a younger QB in FA or use that money on a few top players to get us over the hump and then draft a rookie QB for the future.

BTW Anyone have any thoughts about Brian Hoyer of the Patriots? I heard he's a Restricted FA this year. Anyone know enough about him to consider him for the starting job here in Washington? Just a thought.

The Peyton Manning experiment is the last thing I want going on here next season, hell to the NO when it comes to signing Peyton.

Don't really know anything about Hoyer, but I can tell you I don't want some punk who has played on the Patriots his whole career.  I want nothing to do with any Patriot players, yea even Wes Welker.

Give me either RGIII, Tannehill or Foles and I will be happy, drafting a QB is the only way to go at this point.

Until things heat up here is my last word about picking up Flynn. If he wants Kolb money forget it, but I think he will come much more reasonably. Other than that, I would gage my interest based on the interest of the Dolphins. Just because they want him does not make him good, but if they don't want him then it is a huge red flag. I mean if your own coach doesn't want you when he needs a QB, then what should everyone else think. If they are intersted it is a good sign because as a new HC this guy knows he needs to make an impact somewhere quick. if he feels Flynn is that guy after working with him, then maybe he is and we shoudl get involved to at least drive up the price. Of course this is all dependent on how much we have to give Peyton Manning. LOL

I would not be opposed to bringing in either of the NE QB's, but if they let Mallet go cheaply then see above because Brady is no spring chicken and mallet ws brought in to learn at the knee of the master for awhile. If they bail on him now, already, it doesn't look goos for him somewhere else either, unless he has a personality conflict with Belichek. Can't imagine that though. LOL
