Why UK will likely win a NC this year

January 31, 2012 7:30 pm

This is an objective post.  If you aren't watching the UK/TN game right now you are missing what is happening.  This team is FINALLY starting to mature and Anthony Davis is becoming a BEAST!  If you have a buncha talent and it don't mature (I thought that might happen this season) then you get knocked off by a lower seed in the second round.  I am seeing more now.  The talent is there and starting to hit on all aspects of the game.

What will be the difference IMO?  The free throw shootin'!  Cal almost never has good free throw shootin' teams.  Almost every team that advances get's cold at some point in the big tourney and what carries a cold team through?  Grinding out points, good D, and good free throw shootin'.

If the Cats don't win it all this season.  It will be a cryin' shame!

AMEN !!!! This UK team matures with every game, especially since teams are now trying to "bully" them. Love that they play a physical game just as others try to do to them. So much can be said about UK's talent, but what can I say about Kidd-Gilchrist's HEART ?? WHAT PASSION!!!! Love me some "CATS !!!

jonvi - I like Jim Beam.  A good Kentucky bourbon.  If SU and UK end up in Nawlins.  We should go there and drink till some tranny wakes us up.

Bleedblue - I love Makers but it is a little too sweet for me.  I had 10 doubles at Two Keys Tavern one night.  I love Wild Turkey but it makes me mean and it did a girlfriend of mine.  We drank it a lot and it did not turn out well.  I will have to try Woodford Reserve and the #8!  I heard Red Stag is great.  The last time I was in Cincy we drank some local bourbon that replaced the Beam and it was pretty dam good.  Don't remember the name of it.

Was it after you had 10 doubles of Makers that you made your determination of UK's abilities?Smile

Well.  The maturance.  I am seein' suggests the talents of this team will do it all down the stretch.  BC fo'sees tourney blowouts.  BC sees difficult wins by UK on D and grindin' out points based on inside shootin', lobs to AD.  Close games Gerg.  But won by free throws by UK in the final moments to bring UK yet another NC.

ahhh...they play like crap anywhere....remember APSU?  Just taking a jab, they definitely play much better at home.  There was a point (after UF and U-Conn) that I thought TN MIGHT be able to make a push towards the NCAA, but that is over now.

Now, since we're talking about Kentucky Bourbon, I for one am a fan of the Buffalo Trace.  Great tase! Not sweet like Jack (TN Whiskey) or Makers..although Makers and Woodford rank right up there with the Trace IMO.  Go Cats...and Bourbon for that matter:)

If it does happen, it's most likely because the BE is so down this year that there's not a team to really stop KY outside of Cuse and Cuse has lost a lot of odd ones the past few years in the tourney.  Maybe Huggins will make the wildcats his play thing this year...you know, alternate every year as it has been thus far.

Cincy, you are correct in that this team is turning a corner.  They did what they should have done at home against Tennessee which is beat them soundly.  As Vol u me said, they play like crap on the road.  Couldn't be more spot on.  A lot of the average teams are like that.  We drubbed Arkansas in Rupp.  Look at what they are doing right now to Vandy.  I do agree with what you are saying about UK, but don't crown them anything.  Still a long, long way to go and a lot of improving to do before we can talk #8.  But we are rolling in the right direction now.

As for bourbon, if you think Maker's is too sweet, you sure as hell couldn't stand Red Stag.  I bought a couple of little shot bottles to try it.  Okay for a change of pace for a drink, but it's hard to drink more than one and not think that your teeth may rot out.  If you haven't had Maker's 46, you need to try that.  Woodford is good as someone else said.  If you really want a good drink, try you some Basil Haydens or some Bookers.  I'd tell you to get some Pappy, but it's really difficult to come by, not to mention it's $$$.

They have a great chance and there just freaks of nature. As long as KU isn't the 2 seed in their bracket I don't see how anyone could keep them from the Final Four.

Ahhhh... no. An impassioned post, yest. A post that makes excellent points about UK, no doubt. But objective? It won't kill you to learn the difference between objective and subjective. And I'm not even saying that a UK fan can't make an objective post. But yours isn't it.

BC, you could have just stopped at Anthony Davis. He makes this UK team the #1 defensive team in the country. His ability to block shots prevents other teams' big men from scoring and with that part of a team's offense held in check, guards are forced to settle for jumpers and bigs are forced to take shots they wouldn't normally take. Interpretation: Davis completely e ffs up a team's offensive game plan. Oh, and he can shoot, too.

Now while Davis holds down the post, UK's guards and forwards are able to tighten up their defense on the opposing team's guards and forwards, knowing that if they get beat, there's a pretty good chance Davis is going to clean up after them. If he doesn't block the shot, he's going to alter it or force the offensive player to pass out of the post. The trouble with kicking it back out is that you have Davis in front of you, and that guard or forward that you beat to the paint is now trapping you.

As if Davis isn't enough on both ends of the floor, you have (my personal favorite, even though I'm a UNC fan) MK-G who has a complete game, and Terrence Jones. There's your "big 3" that a lot of championship-caliber teams have, but UK has even more who can hurt, if not kill you. Teague may not be the flashy point guard that Cal has had in the past like Rose, Evans, Wall, and Knight, but this kid is the real deal. My least favorite player is the mouthy Doron Lamb, but he can shoot and all he needs is to drain 2 or 3 to get hot and bury you. Then you still have Miller. Wiltjer sucks, but he doesn't have to be good. He provides minutes. I feel like I'm leaving someone out, but that really doesn't matter because that's enough weapons to beat any team in March...

Except UNC. Wink

I think I have found my soulmate.  I seriously need to branch out and experience the more costly bourbons out there but I tend to be stuck in a rut.  You cain't beat 2 ginormous bottles of JB fo' 20 bucks each at ABC liquor here in FL.   Thanks for the ideas.  One day I will definately get my head out my azz and try some of those others.

As far as #8.  There is still a long long way to go.  True dat.  I am just gettin' a woody watchin' the development of this UK team develope.  The flaws are starting to disapear.
