MAJOYENRAC'S ALL STAR PICKS

February 1, 2012 10:01 am

Here's my picks, which means these are the picks that SHOULD happen regardless of any of your opinions.

Let me know what you think and add yours.

I mean Kyle Lowry is a sensation, whod'a thunk.  The Bulls were after him way back before we got Rose, and folks were thinking he'd be a nice backup to Hinrich then.  Who'd have thought he'd be a legit star, let alone starting PG (he was good, but nobody would have expected this good).

My All Star picks regardless of fans

East
1) Derrick Rose - best PG in the game, I know I'm a Bulls fan, but come now.
2) Dwyane Wade (even though injured he's still a stud when he's playing as he's proven again since coming back)
3) LeBron James - best indiivdual talent in the game.
4) Josh Smith (he's a head case, he's a coaching nightmare because he has a pretty low bball IQ and can hurt your team), but he's been on fire and has enough talent to offset this, and is finally being more good to great than a headache.
5) Dwight Howard.  His team is quitting on him, but he doesn't look to be quitting on the team, even if his antics are causing the Magic to fall apart.  Trade him to Chicago in March for Luol Deng (26), Taj Gibson (26), Omer Asik (23?), Our 2 upcoming first round picks (ours and Charlotte's option which can be fully unprotected by 2015), and there you go, Orlando won't get a better offer.  If they do, remove some of these guys and give em Noah (we have to wait until March 1st, but I think Noah can play well at the 4 with his passing skills, making Carlos Boozer the best bench player in the league).

East Reserves
1) Carmelo Anthony.  Has to learn team ball, he's a top 10 talent in the league, but not a top ten player because he doesn't play team ball and refuses to play defense.
2) Joe Johnson - not worth the money he's making, but a constant deserving all star, so not as bad off as you'd think.
3) Deron Williams.  I hate him, but he is pretty good to great.  I've always hated him from his UofI days, for no real reason--he's become more a prima donna as a pro, which makes it easier to hate him, but I just didn't like him from the start.
4) Chris Bosh.  Gets a lot of grief, but he's good.  Just not a clear #1, but a great #2, playing the role of a #3.
5) Andre Iguodala.  If Hawes wasn't injured for half the year so far he'd be here too.
6) Rajon Rondo.  I know he's missed almost as many games as Hawes, but bigger rep and the fact that Boston will have a player, gives him the nod for me, as he's their best player.
7) Amare Stoudemire.

5 Biggest East Omissions no order
1) Roy Hibbert Indiana.  Indy deserves an all star with their record, but it's more a team concept team than a star driven team right now.  Hibbert's as good as any on that team, and his size and the fact he's been consistent gives him the edge as the snub.
2) Ryan Anderson, Orlando.  Anderson's been a sensation so far, but let's see if he can keep that up a year, and if he plays this way next year, he may be here.
3) Brandon Jennings.  Can't defend a turtle on the court, but his speed and his passing and O skills are getting all star worthy.  Can he keep this shooting touch going (up over half a percent over his previous career mark).
4) Joakim Noah, Bulls.  He took a few weeks to get going and was playing like crap until about 2-3 weeks ago, but he's come on, and when he's on like he is, he's the second best C in the East.  Too bad the slow start likely cost him his all star nod.
5) Luol Deng Bulls.  THe injury didn't help matters, but Luol is close to an all star, one of the best 3 defenders in the game, and a decent and consistent O game to boot.  Carlos Boozer also is close to an all star, despite an odd bad rap.  Booz's minutes are down, but his effciciency is still at his career mark.  Bulls started using him more on O and he's been performing quite well.

West Starters.
1) Chris Paul, 2nd best PG.
2) Kobe Bryant.  Probably second in MVP rating behind James, though maybe third behind James and Rose.  He's back.
3) Kevin Durant
4) Kevin Love
5) Andrew Bynum

West Reserves
6) Paul Gasol
7) Dirk Nowitzki (slow start from him, but he's still deserving)
8) Blake Griffin
9) LaMarcus Aldridge
10) Russell Westbrook
11) Monta Ellis - he's one of the most electric combo PG's in the game and deserves an all star nod, even if his team never wins, it's not on him (or when healthy Curry), it's on the bigs....Lee's dramatically overpaid a one side player in the post is awful to have unless that player is a Kevin Love (rebounds everything everywhere) or a Blake Griffin (most athletic PF and perhaps (he or Rose) player in the game)
12)  Steve Nash.  Hall of Famer and still awesome.

5 Key Omissions
1) Kyle Lowry - It sucks, but Nash is still better than Lowry.  Lowry should be here, but all the PFs in the West take his spot.  Can Lowry keep this up though? I don't know...
2) Tony Parker.  Quitely having another GREAT year.  It goes to show how good the PG's are today in that Parker, a historically solid
PG is probably 10th in the league.
3) Ricky Rubio.  He and Adelman have already changed the culture in Minny.  Suddenly Minny is fun to watch, he's as good as advertized and will only get better.
4) Danilo Gallinari - really the entire Denver Nuggets team could be here since they're all basically at the same level....too bad
5) Marc Gasol.  I think Dirk took his spot, which is probably crap, but so be it.  He's very close and has been almost as good as his brother (granted his brother's having a slightly down year mostly because he's under utilized).  I wouldn't have a problem with him moving above and taking either brother Pau or Dirk's spot.  Pau would be here as a lock if he wasn't on the Mike Brown Lakers (Pau's still better than Bynum).

Amare and Monta Ellis are the only ones I would have a legitimate beef with. Amare has been a non-factor in crunch time. He's shooting horribly from the field for a PF. He's averaging a career low in rebounds. He's been a huge disappointment. Hibbert is much more deserving.

As for Ellis: I just don't buy him being a great player. He has a lot of freedom offensively. Even Nate Robinson was putting up big numbers when he was getting big minutes.

Greg Monroe deserves to be in the All Star game over Amar'e Stoudemire. STAT has been having a big down year and the Knicks haven't been as great as some (mainly Knicks fans) thought they'd be before the season started. For further proof:

Amare: 17.6 ppg (15.2 shot/game) 8.0 rpg 1.5 apg 1.2 spg .7 bpg 42.9% FG 81.0% FT 2.9 TOs/game 34.4 min/game

Monroe: 15.7 ppg (12.3 shots/game) 9.7 rpg 2.6 apg 1.4 spg .5 bpg 50.7% FG 81.8% FT 2.3 TOs/game 32.3 min/game

Monroe beats Amare in everything other than blocks (by .2) and points, but he's only 1.9 points behind him despite taking 2.9 less shots, and he's also shooting 7.8% higher on FG%. Not to mention, he's also playing 2.1 less minutes a game and doesn't have teams gameplanning just for him as he doesn't have other great teammates around him. Yes, the Pistons suck, but he should still be given credit for the good season he's been having; or at least more deserving than a guy that is having a down season.

I'll make the same argument again Dirk Nowitzki as he's not been that great to start off either. Guys shouldn't get in based off their names; at least not the reserves as we know the starters are going to be voted in off names. A guy I think deserves to be in for the West over Dirk is Paul Millsap. Proof:

Dirk: 16.7 ppg (13.9 shots/game)  5.8 rpg  2.3 apg  .8 spg  .5 bpg  44.8% FG  90.7% FT  1.5 TOs/game  31.2 min/game
Millsap: 17.1 ppg  (13.4 shots/game)  9.4 rpg  1.9 apg  1.6 spg  .8 bpg  52.5% FG  78.3% FT  1.3 TOs/game  31.8 min/game

This doesn't even take into account that the Jazz have been off to alot better start than everyone expected and that Millsap wasn't splitting time early in the season with Derrick Favors. Since recently when Millsap has become the go-to guy, he's been a 20 and 10 guy that I've always said he's capable of being. Over the last ten games he's been averaging 21.1 ppg  10.8 rpg  2.0 apg  1.7 spg  51.5% FG (16.3 shots/game). He's becoming the guy I said he would be and has proven he's a Top 10 PF in the NBA.

MAJOYENRAC'S ALL STAR PICKS

February 1, 2012 8:27 pm

the Grizzlies deserve an All-Star and it aint Rudy Gay

East All-Stars:

G- Derrick Rose
G- Dwyane Wade
F- LeBron James
F- Carmelo Anthony
C- Dwight Howard

R- Deron Williams
R- Joe Johnson
R- Josh Smith
R- Chris Bosh
R- Roy Hibbert
R- Andre Iguodala
R- Rajon Rondo

Can't really see this happening any other way, James and Melo start together because they pick Forwards not SF s and PFs. Out of the back up Cs Chandler and Noah will get the most votes but Hibbert is superior to both this season and he's the anchor for the Pacers this season and both the Knicks and Bulls will get other players in. Amare Stoudemire should be excluded, frankly if the Knicks were winning right now it may be different but no way should a subpar Knicks team get two players in. Besides Stoudemire isn't playing up to Josh Smith or Iguodala's level or impact. Rondo will get in despite being injured he's the top player now for the Celtics and the Coaches selecting the reserves will make sure at least one Celtic is on the roster.

West All-Stars:

G- Chris Paul
G- Kobe Bryant
F- Kevin Durant
F- Blake Griffin
C- Andrew Bynum

R- Russell Westbrook
R- Tony Parker
R- Kevin Love
R- LaMarcus Aldridge
R- Marc Gasol
R- Pau Gasol
R- Monta Ellis (this spot is going to be crazy, I think a lot of people are going to feel snubbed)

If you want the best player on a winning team well that isn't easy because you have Denver with Lawson and Gallinari deserving and really the Nugs deserve an All-Star but because they are so balanced they likely will miss out. Suprisingly the Utah Jazz are playing good basketball, so Jefferson and Millsap will get attentions, honestly though Paul Millsap is the better of the two. Likely though I don't see him getting in because he's just not a popular choice. Ultimately they will probably invite another Guard due to the balanced attack from the Nugs and Millsap going under the radar. So I'd say either Lowry, Rubio, Ellis, or Nash get the spot. Lowry on the winning team, Nash has the credential and is still putting up the numbers, Rubio has the flair but honestly the numbers aren't as good as Nash's. I say Ellis gets the spot due to his elite play at times, really tough spot though to pick.

MAJOYENRAC'S ALL STAR PICKS

February 2, 2012 11:19 am

Big B,

I am a big Greg Monroe fan....I think he's your lone keeper, and like Hawes etc I think one more year like htis and he's an all star lock.  But the Pistons are awful, and while the Knicks are disappointing, they're not quite awful.  Amare and Melo don't mesh.....  I know Amare's been a bit down to say the least, but this is one of those "lifetime achievement" all star nods, and may be his last.  He's still very very good, and while he should be better, I think it's more on a lack of PG play that's hurting his indiivdual stats.  I would still take Amare over many bigs in the game, and as such I gave him that "achivement" nod, even though if this doesn't keep up he's out.  Brandon Jennings might just be my biggest snubbery out East.  It's just hard to make a player an alls tar when his team is 4-20.  I know the Knicks are 8-13, which is crappy, but they really have a mismatched roster, and can make a run if they add a PG to respectability, the Pistons are all but done this year.

Same iwth Dirk.  Dirk gets in being FInals MVP and the best PF (or arguably top 3) of the last 12+ years.  He's having a down start, but he's still great, and deserves that spot for "achievement" reasons.....plus I'm still taking Dirk over all but maybe 8-10 players in this league, regardless of any slow start, and the Mavs are still the 4th best team record wise out West....they need an all star, and Dirk's clearly it.  I think Marc Gasol is the biggest snub in my list....Paul Millsap is probably my biggest snub on my snubs list (I took Gallinari as a snub over him only because I perceive Denver as a tougher team than the surprising Jazz, but Millsap's been great so far this year) .

It sucks, but it is what it is, it's based on perceived value to any team and on rep a bit, and I'd still take Amar'e or Dirk over Monroe or Millsap today, maybe tomorrow I'd take Greg Monroe over Amar'e, but unlikely over Dirk, until Dirk finally wears out (I don't think he has, I think Dallas is still figuring out their team).

MAJOYENRAC'S ALL STAR PICKS

February 2, 2012 2:06 pm

Hey Crapper long time no talk, how ya doing?

Ellis I don't know I think he's basically the old Bulls version of Ben Gordon but with more passing/ball handling skills.  I thought a few years there Ben Gordon was a shoulda been all star with his heroics in the 4th quarters, but never was.  I think Ellis is much the same (less all in the 4th quarter, but just as electric overall, except he can and does pass, which helps him).

He's streaky as hell sure, but more consistently streaky than a Nate Robinson and has been (Monta) playing this same way basically now for 7 seasons, it's time for him to be recognized.

Is he a superstar? No, is he a star? I'd say yes.

I think if he had some real post O presence and a better SF he'd do even better....he also may do better at the point, but then again, he's so shoot first, maybe a 2 is fine.  Curry's not a problem in GSW, I think it's the post, and it's not all Biedrins (Lee's horrendously overpaid, even if he can get decent stats he's a piss poor defender, I mean it's ok to have a player like Lee if you've got decent defenders in othe rpositions, but when you don't, then his salary represents a huge gap that will cripple the GSW (Lee and Curry could and should be a great tandem in this league)).

Brandon Jennings might just be my biggest snubbery out East.
Yeah he might end up being the biggest snub of this years All-Star game. I can't see him getting in over Deron Williams, Dwill is heating up so it's going to be hard to top a guy with his name recognition. Also with the way the 76ers are playing they can't leave them without an All-star but I wouldn't be suprised to see Jennings get the spot over Iggy and it wouldn't bother me if that happened.

I will be extremely disappointed if they someone how select Noah or Chandler over Hibbert that would be a complete disgrace.

Ellis is really good, at times though he's inconsistent, his teams performance really isn't good enough to get him in but I just don't see a clear cut player for that last spot and I think it's about time he gets invited to the All-Star game. That spot though is really up for grabs and there's about 7 players that could take it.

MAJOYENRAC'S ALL STAR PICKS

February 2, 2012 5:02 pm

I just don't believe in doing that kind of stuff; giving guys credit for how good they are and/or how good they've done in the past. I was a huge Allen Iverson fan, but even I thought it was a disgrace he was voted in as a starter a few years ago. I believe a guy deserves credit for the kind of season he's having, whether he is or is not a pre-determined all-star caliber player.

Greg Monroe and Paul Millsap have had better seasons than Amar'e Stoudemire and Dirk Nowitzki, and just because both Dirk and Amare are normally great players that play at a high level, that doesn't mean they deserve to be all stars over Monroe and Millsap. Now I'm not foolish, I know Monroe has no shot and Millsap has a slim to none chance, but that doesn't mean they always get the picks right. I'm just arguing for what I believe should be right and don't believe in guys getting into the All Star game just to add to their list of achievements for their careers.

I really hope Jennings doesn't make the All Star game because he always seems to play the best when he is snubbed(See every game he plays vs New York). And his defense is fine, not great by any means, but playing for Skiles you have to be able to at least be decent defensively and he is. That being said if he continues to play the way he is, he without a doubt deserves to make it considering he is 4th in the NBA in Win Earned Statistic, 13th in the NBA in TS, and has a 3-1 AST/TO rating. Quite honestly, he basically has played Russell Westbrook to a draw this year.

I think if he had some real post O presence and a better SF he'd do even better....he also may do better at the point, but then again, he's so shoot first, maybe a 2 is fine.

Monta Ellis is not as shoot first as people think.  The main reason he is not a great choice at PG (but not a bad PG either) is that he has small hands and turns the ball over with the dribble a bit too much.  He can't dribble real well in traffic and even sometimes just loses it off the dribble with minimal pressure.  As far as passing, he rarely makes a passing turnover and most of his turnovers are off the dribble (which is the opposite of Curry btw who just drives me crazy with lazy and risky passes).

Anyway, unless the Warriors win like 10 straight games which won't happen, Monta is not going to be an all star.

Curry's not a problem in GSW

Probably not be he has been pretty bad this year.  He had a nice game 2 out of the last 3 but has been real sporadic and just does a lot of things that are really stupid (lazy passes, dumb reach fouls, etc.) that make me want to choke him.

Big B,

THe issue especially this year is that it's still so early in the year to know how good a season someone's had.

Typically by the time all star voting is up guys have had some 45+ games, this year we'll hit what 25-26 for most teams, so I think more so than any you pick based on the success of some players who started off slowly.

Plus it's not like in me picking Dirk Nowitzki or Amare Stoudemire (who had a great game incidentally after he got my selection against my Bulls--he was probably reading it, you know he was--and wanted to prove Majoyenrac right).

Monroe's time will come, he'll be there soon enough, but the combo of bad team (and while the Knicks are slow-starting, the Pistons are downright bad) and his youth makes me leave him out just this year.

MAJOYENRAC'S ALL STAR PICKS

February 6, 2012 10:01 am

Badgers Ballers, I wish Rose played Jennings every game, as Jennings can't defend Rose at all.  Skiles has Jennings playing in the Ben Gordon role (a role Jennings can excel at if he keeps this shooting up--which has been pretyt crazy good after his first two abysmal years of shooting), Jennings is the non defender on an otherwise Skiles system defensive team (well _rew Goo_en can't defend either--or well can one of every 7-10 games, it's the thing that's always made Drew Gooden an afterthought in th elegaue).

Jennings deserves an all star nod because of how electric he's been offensively and he's carrying the injured Bucks into respectability all by himself.....but he is abysmal defensively.

MAJOYENRAC'S ALL STAR PICKS

February 6, 2012 3:58 pm

I have no idea how they pick the "All-stars" but as a Spurs fan, it makes me sick that year in and year out, PG's like Chris Paul and Russel Westbrook, who hav'nt done JACK in their careers get in the All-Star game ahead of Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobli.

Parker was furious the other night and made sure Westbrook knew about it, scoring 42 on him and blowing out his overhyped Thunder team. But ESPN showed 3 Russel WestBrook highlights, and just 1 Tony Parker highlight.

Really though the Spurs are too mature for the All-star game itself. But it just flat-out disgraceful that they're not being selected.

I guess they should call it the "All-Flash" game, because thats all I'm seeing from the players playing in it. Maybe the NBA should let champions start playing in their "all-star" and people will finally start watching it.
