Mayweather/Cotto a done deal at 154!

February 1, 2012 12:35 pm

May 5, 2012 it's Mayweather vs. Cotto for Cotto's belt at 154.

These guys were going to fight in 2005 but Arum said Cotto wasn't ready for Mayweather yet and he had to build Cotto up a bit more.  Arum then did everything he could to not put any of his fighters up against Mayweather.

Cotto ended his contract with Top Rank 1 month ago, and the fight was "a piece of cake" to make without Arum getting in the way.

This one might set some PPV records with the #1 and #3 PPV fighters in the world going against each other.  LET'S DO THIS!!!!

And for those of you wondering, although I think Mayweather is BY FAR the most talented fighter in the world, I will be rooting for Cotto in this one.

This is the next best thing since Team Pacquiao couldn't get it together. I'm curious to see how Cotto is going to fight Floyd. We know that Floyd is gonna be Floyd no matter what the opponent does, but is Cotto gonna try and box with him, is he gonna try to bully Floyd? Ok, I'm on board, it should be a good fight.

Floyd said, "I hate the though of fighting guys at catchweights.  I want to fight them at their best weight so there are no excuses.  Cotto will be 9 pounds heavier than when he fought Manny, it's a different Miguel Cotto when he is at full strength"

I happen to agree with that statement.

Just like it's a different JMM at full strength! Tongue out

Even though this fight is about 3-4 years too late, I like it.  I actually like this one better than Pac/Bradley.  And of course this will do much better PPV #'s because Cotto is the biggest name out there behind Manny and Floyd.  Has Cotto agreed to fight in Vegas?  I'm sure he has to, but I know said he only fights in NY.

As for the fight, I think Mayweather will outbox him.  Cotto's last few fights have come against dudes with absolutely NO defense whatsoever!!  But it will be interesting because it's at 154 and Cotto has a chance to bully him and take him out of his comfort zone.  If he can do that, it could change everything.  Mosley did it for 2 rounds, I don't see why Cotto can't.

Cotto fighting at a weight drained 145 coming off a devastating loss to Margocheato with a bad trainer against Manny is a MUCH different fighter than him fighting at full strength in his own weight division coming of 3 KO victories with an Olympic trainer.

I can't wait for this fight.  Cotto at full strength taking on a 35 year old Mayweather might just mean a Mayweather loss.  I would have loved this fight 3 or 4 years ago too, but Arum refused to consider it.  SOOOOOO Glad Cotto left Top Rank.  Can't wait til may 5th!

Forgetting how excited I am about this fight for a moment, what I love even more is how bad this fight sticks it to Bob Arum.  I'm not sure if Floyd could have stuck it to him any worse. LOL

Is this the same Cotto who TKOd Michael Jennings 2 fights prior to fighting Manny? Or is this the same weight drained Cotto who fought Josh Clottey at 146 six months prior to fighting Manny at 145? Maybe it's the Cotto who had never fought over 147 in his entire career prior to fighting Manny?

In 6 of Floyd's last 7 fights, he has fought somebody in the Top P4P rankings.  Nobody else in boxing has that kind of opposition, yet Floyd continually gets picked on for taking non-competitive fights.

Since Manny refuses to fight him, who the hell do people want him to fight?  You can't say he doesn't try to fight the best out there, because his opponents are always on P4P lists, unlike everybody else in boxing he really does pick the toughest fights, he just makes them look really easy.

Yes, I'd say it's more like that Cotto as opposed to the Cotto that suffered a major concussion from loaded gloves in the fight immediately before Manny.

Or is this the same weight drained Cotto who fought Josh Clottey at 146 six months prior to fighting Manny at 145

Nope, this is the Cotto fighting at the weight he feels most comfortable, not the one draining himself to fight below 147.

Good to see you Ziggy.  Enjoy your Tim Bradley fight :)

My quote was taken from Yahoo Sports, who said in Floyd's last 6 fights, Ortiz was the only fighter not ranked in Yahoos top P4P fighters at the time of fighting Floyd. They are including the Cotto fight. If you disagree, take it up with YahooSports. :)

I've never heard anything about a concussion. Also, the fight with Marg was 1yr and half removed before Cotto fought Manny.

Okay, if you feel Cotto was at full strength against Manny you are entitled to that opinion.  It differs from my opinion and the opinion of almost every boxing expert I've heard speak about it, but you are entitled to that opinion nonetheless.

Your opinion is your opinion, I don't have a problem with that! My problem is with you having the ability to stretch the truth in some of your posts to support whatever agenda you have for that moment. You're smart guy but, man do you come up with some bullsh****@t!!
