Fat Bielema the Whiner

February 2, 2012 8:35 am

Fat Bielema is nothing but a whining little baby.  He complained about "illegal" recruiting practices (I'm assuming oversigning) coming into the B1G with some of the new coaching staffs, and was whining about recruits flipping to other schools.  He was whining mostly, from what I can tell, about Ohio State.

Urban Meyer signed 25 players yesterday and has room for one more.  Six of the players are already enrolled at Ohio State, so they don't count against the 25 player per year limit.  At least 3 or 4 players have decided to transfer out of OSU due to either the coaching change or lack of playing time issues.  Two were kicked off the team for repeated rules violations.  At least 2 players were moved off the football roster because of medical reasons.  The last number I had heard regarding returning players was 59.  However, Meyer said there are several others who are leaving but there just have not been any announcements made yet.  He says that OSU, counting the signings yesterday, is now at 81 players.  Their limit (including the Tat 5 ban) is 82, so they have room to sign one more player.  That being the case, even at 26 (20 counted towards the 2012 class), OSU would not be oversigning.  Even so, the B1G says that you can sign 3 over the limit if you can document the anticipated turnover.

As for flipping recruits, OSU signed 8 players who had previously committed elsewhere.  Most of them were either Penn State recruits who backed out due to the Sandusky incident.  A couple were former Notre Dame recruits who wanted to come to OSU but the former staff (Tressel's staff) hadn't made offers.  The ND guys flipped when Meyer hired two ND assistants for his staff who were Ohio guys and had been OSU fans their entire lives.  As for flipping recruits, I did not hear anyone on the OSU staff complain when Kyle Kalis (an original OSU commit) flipped to Michigan.  Meyer's philosophy on recruiting guys committed to other programs - he called them and asked right off the bat if there was any interest in OSU.  If they got a "no", they said thanks, hung up and moved on.  Bielema is honked off that the Badgers lost Kyle Dodson.  Well too frickin' bad - the only reason he committed there was because of the uncertainty surrounding OSU's staff.  When Meyer came in, things changed.

Bielema was also whining about Meyer being hired and being allowed to recruit while Fickell's staff was still preparing the team for the Gator Bowl.  OSU applied for and received the appropriate waiver from the NCAA to go above the 10 coach limit, but they were still bound by the number of coaches who could work with the team and the number of coaches who could recruit.  Incidentally, there were at least 8 other schools who made coaching changes that applied for and received the same waiver.

Honestly, I am starting to hate Wisconsin more than I hate Michigan.  I don't know why though.  Wisconsin is one of Ohio State's Big Ten bitches, with OSU leading the series 54-18-5.

Wow, you were in the room with Meyer when he called the players - awesome!!

Kinda sounds like a little whining from you.

No, it was a direct quote from him in today's Columbus Dispatch.  I don't need to provide a link because anyone with Google skills can easily find it.  Ask Kyle Kalis how hard Meyer tried to flip him.  Not very - no sense in wasting anyone's time.

Some of you Ohio State fans just can't get off your perches about Wiscosnin knocking off your #1 teams in football and basketball a year ago.  I don't know what you're bitchin' about.  You creamed the basketball team a few weeks later and beat the football team this year.  Talk about a bunch of whiners.

Seriously? I neither an OSU or WI fan, but don't create a thread about whining...when in reality all you are doing is whining about Beliema.

Thanks for chiming in, Mr. Iowa fan.  Iowa is another one of OSU's B1G bitches, and Ferentz is one of the most overrated coaches in the conference.

I'll create whatever thread I feel like, whenever I want to.

If you think I'm whining, so be it.  At least I'm not the head of a major college program whining about someone else who is following the rules in order to deflect the deficiencies I have in trying to land the recruits I want.  If Fat Bielema had closed the deal on Dodson, you wouldn't have heard any of the shizz coming out of his fat pie hole.

Meyer did a great job but here is my thought.  IF the B10 coaches had a "gentleman" agreement to not pursue recruits once they give a verbal to another school, should Meyer have honored that agreement?  He is new to the B10 and has not agreement with the other coaches.  But I would rather the B10 and tOSU did not turn into another SEC mentality.  He didnt oversign and screw any kids over like they do down south but I think he should look at things in the B10 differently than he did in the SEC.

I like that you capitalized the IF in your second sentence, ellupo.  From what I have heard, only some coaches think there's this so called "gentlemen's agreement".  It certainly did not stop Brady Hoke from flipping Kyle Kalis.  He could have said "No, Kyle, you committed to Ohio, you need to go there."  This so called gentlemen's agreement also didn't stop Hoke from hosting Brionte Dunn on an official visit and trying to sway him either.

Verbal commitments are not worth squat.  What really matters is what happens on the first Wednesday in February.

So my question to Buckeye fans is IF there was a "gentlemen's agreement" on this should Meyer who did not make that arrangement stick to that?  It is obvious Hoke is not but Meyer is not Hoke and tOSU is  not scUM.  Any opinions...

OSU is nobody's bitch in the B1G.  They are (in B1G games) 44-46-4 against scUM.  If that makes them Ann's bitch, I guess I don't know what being someone's bitch means.  If OSU had won one more B1G game against the Skunk Weasels, it's dead even at 45-45-4, and once Urban runs off his string of victories, the overall 44-58-6 lead is in jeopardy.

OSU holds a winning record against every other B1G school against whom they have played more than 1 B1G game (they are 0-1 against Nebraska in the B1G, but 2-1 against the Huskers overall).  Their "worst" in conference record against any school other than the Maize and Blow is against the Penn State Knitting Lions. and OSU is .667 against them (12-6).  Next is Illinois at .679.  Beyond that, OSU has won at minimum 73% of their games against any other B1G team.

I think the only coaches who believe there is such a gentlemen's agreement are the ones who can't land the guys they want.  I think that as long as a recruit is willing to listen to you, accept offers for official visits (meaning take your money) and so on, he's fair game all the way up until he signs the LOI.

heir field marshall is glad that ohio state is still locked into bielemas brain. i just think he is setting things up for the demise of his program now that urban has taken over the program and he will not beable to compete once again with the buckeyes.

Amazing thing, that even after the 2000's, OSU still trails Michigan.   That still makes you Michigans' b itch.

Nice though to see you calling out others, but making excuses and if's to lessen your teams b itchness.   lol

I am not even going to respond to your comment. Normally I agree with your takes but right now you are whining about a guy whining. When someone calls you out you revert to calling them names. Good for you!

Being an OSU fan I am typically biased but here's an idea.  I think Urban can justify what he did in recruiting while Fickell took the current team to the bowl game because he wasn't given the luxury of time all season long to talk to players like all the other coaches were allowed.  He is simply an icon to high school football players and they wish to play for him and his staff.  If there is any complaint that can be reasoned here, it is that high school football players do not understand the meaning of a verbal commit and giving universities hope of landing them.  Kalis is just as much to blame for this as the boys that joined OSU instead of Wisconsin or Penn State.  It's competition at it's best.  If a coach has a problem with it, then step up your game!

Here's an interesting article written by my friend Rob, says alot about this subject.  Bret and Urban now see eye-to-eye, and Urban can't wait for November 17th.

The bottom line is all recruits are fair game until they sign their LOI.  Ohio State has had numerous verbals sign with other schools in the past.  It happens to every school out there.  The media is making a big deal about it now because Urban Meyer is the new head football coach at The Ohio State University.
