Peyton or Favre?

February 3, 2012 11:02 am

As I see the drama beginning to unfold in Indy, this question occurred to me.  Which former QB will retire/unretire the most? Or to restate it this way, Which diva will be the most unwilling to go away?  I am predicting the Patriots to win the Super Bowl BUT...deep down inside, I would love for Eli to win #2 and see how that affects older brother sitting on only 1. Sibling rivalries are great, it would be so wonderful to be at the Manning family get-togethers and just hear the diva (with 1) talk about all his records to the little brother (with 2)!  That would make a great credit card commercial..."The little brother...his brother holds all the records..big brother is done while little brother wins another super bowl,,,priceless!!!!

Depends. The media retired Favre more than Favre did. I think they've already retired Manning once as well.

To this point, Peyton Manning hasn't retired.  Why don't we wait until retires once before making the accusations.  It's easy to sit back and cast stones at great QB's when the best QB your team has started in the past 10 years is Trent Green.

Since Manning entered the league, the Chiefs have had the following QB's:

Rich Gannon
Elvis Grbac
Warren Moon
Trent Green
Damon Huard
Brodie Croyle
Tyler Thigpen
Matt Cassel
Kyle Orton
and Tyler Palko

10 QB's.  And, aside from Warren Moon who spent the twilight of his career in KC, the other 9 quarterbacks couldn't hold a candle to Manning  At best, Rich Gannon finished his 16 year career with half as much passing yardage and half as many passing TD's as Manning.  As well, the combined number of Pro Bowl appearances of the other 9 QB's is 7.  Manning has been to 11 and is the leagues only 4-time MVP.  He has earned the leagues respect and the respect and admiration of those in the Colts organization.  When he retires, I'm certain it will be a final decision.

...seriously?  Brett Favre waffled for years, taking a good amount of time into each offseason to officially announce he was returning, and then he did one or two about faces in the last handful of years, changing teams after the Packers wouldn't take him back.

In contrast, Peyton Manning has retired ZERO times, and has already said he's going to play if he is physically able to do so.  That's a pretty cut-and-dried line; either he can throw the ball, or he can't, and that makes his decision.  If he leaves the Colts, it will be because that organization cut him outright, not because he retired and then tried to come back later.

Two situations that aren't at all comparable.

I agree that this is not a good comparison. Manning had every reason in the world to retire this season but refused to consider for a moment reliquinshing the spotlight.

Now, if the question is who is the bigger self-centered egomaniac between Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, I think we could have a healthy debate. I have never seen such a classless and insecure attempt to hijack attention away from the Super Bowl participants as was perpertrated by Manning this week.

The guy doesn't say a word for months and he chooses media day at the Super Bowl to schedule an interview because he couldn't stand the fact that his little brother and arch rival were getting all the attention. Then, does he say anything of substance? No. He proceeds to do a ten-minute informercial about the many benefits of Gatorade.

If that wasn't enough, he follows that up with his busch league stunt the next day that his doctors have ordained him ready to "resume his career" as if there wasn't a multitude of hurdles he will still need to overcome to even sniff the field of competitive play, not the least of which is being cleared by team doctors, as the owner quickly pointed.

What a joke Manning has become! So desperate. So sad. He knows this is the last time in his career that he will be mentioned during the Super Bowl week and he is milking it for everything it is worth.

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, I agree with everything you just said. Been thinking the samething myself. it's kind of an unwritten rule you let the SB teams have the spot light they've earned.

And the Gator Aid thing was just pathetic

Really?  You're whining because the spotlight is being stolen from the Pats?  I've always lived under the thought that I would rather my team go under the radar, than have the media constantly covering them.

Bottom line, we all knew this was going to happen in the off-season for the Colts and Manning (at least I did)...regardless of who was in the Superbowl.  Manning has even stated that they would wait until after the Superbowl to sit down and talk with Irsay and come to a decision....doesn't seem like "stealing" the spotlight to me.

When did Peyton hold an official news conference?  Bottom line, the media continues to talk about it, and rumors continue to swirl...both sides need to release statements to quelch some of those rumors.  I wish the media would just shut up about it.  But then again......would you rather them go back to talking about Gronk's ankle non-stop instead?  Or as Pats fans...would you like for the media to keep reliving 2007?  Maybe...but I doubt it.

Awww.  Did somebody steal the spotlight from your golden boy?  Poor Tommy.  What will he do?

The media has been drooling over this decision long before the Super Bowl came to town.  Welcome to Indianapolis!  It's been a media circus here since early July.  The only difference between now and then is, the Giants and Patriots are in town.  Don't blame Manning for overshadowing the game with his situation.  It's certainly drawn more attention than the game.  The media knows that Jim Irsay will have to make a decision before March 8th and until that time, it's the only thing going on in the league.  Sorry Patriots fans.  Once again, you have to take a back seat to Peyton Manning.  Had the game been held in Foxboro, you'd still have to take a back seat.  The NFL world is obviously more interested in whether the Colts will re-sign Manning.  Maybe if the Patriots were a little more likable, they might get some coverage.

EASY choice. Peyton Manning!!!! He's better than Favre in his prime and on top of that, the Colts/Manning issue is more on health and the fact that they could get Andrew Luck. This isnt like Favre at all. Favre didnt miss a whole year and year in and year out take forever to decide on retirement or staying, so Peyton Manning.

A very good game last night, I had picked the Pats but sort of wanting Eli to win 1 more than his big brother.  He did, and I am here to officiallt proclaim that Eli, not Peyton, is the best Manning QB ever.  It is going to be interesting if Peyton will risk further injury to neck or just quietly go away.  Its my understanding that former Bears QB Eric Kramer had same injury.  Favre is finally gone perhaps Peyton will be gone too.

THIS i will NOT agree with until i see TWO things. 1) CONSISTANT good seasons. how can anyone say that Eli Manning is the better Manning if say, in 2012, the Eagles win the NFC East and the Cowboys make the wildcard and Eli Manning is watching???? i am not saying that will happen, but i have to see that first and 2) those Redskins losses still put prevents me from saying he's better than big brother right now. Peyton may not be a great playoff QB, but at least he consistantly gets there and doesnt lose twice to teams he shouldnt lose to. there's no excuse for the Giants to get beat twice by Washington and Rex Grossman who will likely be replaced. like i said, if for the next 3-8 seasons, Manning makes the playoffs, then i could agree, but like i said, if he misses the playoffs next year or in 2 years, then i cant say he's better than Peyton.
It is going to be interesting if Peyton will risk further injury to neck or just quietly go away.
if he's fully healthy, he plays and he should and honestly, i would like to see Miami and Peyton Manning and i would love for him to win a ring while there too.

Favre is the bigger pain in the arse if you ask me. Peyton will retire if he can't produce to his normal level.  I think that he has too much pride to go out there and stink up the joint.  I also believe that once he retires, he's gone for good.  Peyton has something that Favre didn't have, class, and family that gives him advice.  The Mannings are too worried about the public eye and wouldn't do anything to embarass themselves or the Manning name.  I would love to see Peyton continue on for another 4-5 years as long as he is healthy and not just trying to chase his brothers superbowl rings.

This ia  relatively easy question to answer seeing as how Favre has retired and then unretired while Manning has not and will not do. It really comes down to whether or not Manning feels he can play at the elite level that he is used too. If he feels he cannott then he will retire and never come back.
