Hello. I am the new Bear's GM:

February 4, 2012 5:38 pm

Here is my list of Free Agents (My decision in prenthesis):

  1. Matt Forte, RB, Bears. Age: 26. (Long term contract no matter what)

  2.  Israel Idonije, DE, Bears. Age: 31. (2-3 year deal at market value)

  3.  Kahlil Bell, RB, Bears. Age: 25. (3-4 Year deal)

  4. Tim Jennings, CB, Bears. Age: 28 (2 Year deal incentive based)

  5.  Amobi Okoye, DT, Bears. Age: 25. (2 Year deal incentive based)

  6.  Josh McCown, QB, Bears. Age: 33. (1 Year deal)

  7. Craig Steltz, SS, Bears. Age: 26. (3 Year deal)
  8. Corey Graham, CB, Bears. Age: 27. (2-3 Year incentive based)
  9. Kellen Davis, TE, Bears. Age: 26. (2 Year deal)
  10. Brandon Meriweather, S, Bears. Age: 28. (No attempt to resign)
  11. Zackary Bowman, CB, Bears. Age: 27. (No attempt)
  12. Roy Williams, WR, Bears. Age: 30. (No attempt)
  13. Caleb Hanie, QB, Bears. Age: 27. (No  attempt)
Obviously some of these players will be snatched up in FA by other teams.

Prior to this, I will be cutting a few contracted players:
Frank Omiyale
Marion Barber

In Free Agency, I will sign two WRs (Dwayne Bowe and Robert Meachem are my reaches-I have to get one of them-The other WR will be young slot like Eddie Royal or Harry Douglas)

Then I will sign a veteran OT (like Demetrius Bell or Anthony Collins)

Then I make a run at Aaron Ross to compete with Tim Jennings for playing time.

Finally I try to get Michael Griffin or Dwight Lowery to bring some stability to the Safety spot.

The Draft, however is where we really begin to build:

Round 1 is WR (no brainer)
I want Floyd or Wright.  If both are gone, I will not reach for A. Jeffery.  I'll try to trade down or go after the best OT on the board.

Round 2 is a flip of whatever I got in round 1 (WR or OT)

Round 3 MLB (groom to follow #54) and a CB

Round 4 is a DE

Round 5 is a TE

Round 6 is another WR

Round 7 is a FB/HB type

If I were Jay Cutler I really wouldn't like that lack of O-Line reinforcement plan.

I'm 100% in agreement with this.  Anthony Collins cant be the only guy brought in from this plan.  A young OT should be drafted early to challenge Webb for LT or RT if Tice moves Carimi to LT.  Collins will be getting starting money.

Demetrius Bell has chronic knee problems......pass.

Like the re-signs and cuts, except maybe Corey Graham, dont see him taking an incentives deal.

Kendall Wright is 5'10 and dominated a bad conference in terms of secondaries.  The Bears need someone big.

Aaron Ross was very good 2 years ago, now he gets picked on constantly from opposing passing offenses, I know Terrell Thomas had a knee injury, but hes way better than Ross.

A pass rusher should be higher priority as the number 3 to challenge Nick Reed than 4th rounder.  You probably cant find too much from this draft.  I say make a run at Mario Williams.

If you plan to overpay for a shot at Michael Griffen, may as well open the book and go Tyvon Branch.  Better, smarter, and younger.

There arent many talented MLB in this draft......hard to see anyone besides Burfict or Kelechi being able to do the job, may have to wait another year or two.

Love the Meachem pick.  Dwayne Bowe will be franchise tagged......KC knows hes too good to let walk away.  I hope Vincent Jackson isnt an alternative to be overpaid.....

And after watching Super Bowl if I'm the Bears new GM I would realize that smurf WR's are hard to throw to down deep, instead you have to hit them with short throws and hope for yards after catch.

We need some big targets. Wes Welker leads in receptions because of short throws. If Welker was a taller target he makes that deep catch he drops and Patriots run out the clock.

Yeah, I think the playoffs overall showed that no matter how good the QB is...he needs receivers who can do their job on the other end of the throw.

Eli Manning is a good QB, very good in fact. But he has a host of guys he can rely to be there when he needs them. He has guys who can make catches when you'd think they wouldn't be able to. Victor Cruz comes back to the ball on every throw and does a great job of catching the ball away from his body. Nicks gets his hands on anything close and makes some exceptional catches. They utilize tight ends and fullbacks very well to compliment the passing game.

When Eli drops back he has options all over the field.

There's a lot of work to be done on the Bears to get them to the level of something like that.

What SB showed me...

Your QB needs to have above average O-Line...
Your defense needs to be able to put a ton of pressure on opposing QB (something Bears mostly suck at)...
You need one big target at receiver positions (WR, TE) and all of your receivers need to be able to catch almost every single ball thrown in their direction (another thing Bears suck at)...

And last, man, we were better then those Giants and most other teams before Cutler (and then Forte) went down...

The Giants philosophy of building a team is so far different than the Bears. That's what the SB showed me.

Instead of just having one big play receiver they have three. We don't even have one but let's see how this offseason plays out. I'm worried that they will sign one of the second tier FA receivers and think the problem is solved.

Instead of having one guy who can consistently rush the QB, they have 4. With the Bears its, oh we just opened the vault for Julius Peppers and now our pass rushing problems are solved. Peppers' presence will make Henry Melton and Israel Idonije all pros because he's such a monster.

This philisophy is laziness and will always expose your team for a lack of depth. I'm on both knees praying that Phil Emery drastically changes this.

We had a fun party. More people showed up than we expected and my wife was scrambling to make more food even though I told her not too. Then she got pissed at me even though I didn't do anything, what was I supposed to do...kick people out? Then later she had a lot to drink and was able to have a good time. She woke up with the worst hangover she's had in a really long time. She usually only has a couple drinks, but last night she really put it away. Kinda feel bad for her today.

Played some poker before the game. Food was good. I enjoyed the game, it was a good one. Don't care for either team but was happy to see the Giants win rather than the Pats.

House is a mess today and I don't really feel like cleaning, but what can you do.

And yet, we could've had a guy as GM who helped build that deep team that just won the SB.  Just sayin.  Not to disparage Emery but maybe I'm still a bit salty since from the outside I see a Giants team loaded with talent and we had a chance at one of the guys who had a hand in that.

The last football we'll see for a while is over, now it's the long wait until FA and Draft time!  Go Bears.

Well that actually means guys like Hakeem Nicks and or Victor Cruz gets a shot as well ... I do think Jay Cuter to a point makes guys better, he just has to have time and develop them and not necessarily jump at every available FA out there and of course actually have a guy who can actually evaluate talent in that position as well.

ALSO having two solid RB as well ... Giants didn't necessarily click without Bradshaw AND Jacobs both healthy.  Partially Barber wasn't bad but heck imagine a good change of pace back for Forte?

I still give this Bears defense a good couple of seasons and yes you just need to click at the right time, heck the Giants were the exact opposite of the Bears, having Nicks and Jacobs getting healthy made a huge difference.  Losing Cutler and Forte ... well opposite result.

I don't know but it could be the offensive system that really will never have that big time reciever, much less 3 that the Giants found - with the exception of Manningham which they got high in the draft.

If your the GM of the Bears and we don't know the marching orders as of yet ... take care of the OL 1st, get Forte locked up if not franchise him, heck make sure Cutler is upright when the season is over, it's not that far off where the Giants ended up, then of course I'm a Bears fan so have to look at things in the brightside.
