The People's Poll: Week 12 (VOTE HERE!!!!)

February 5, 2012 6:16 pm

1. Kentucky- Looked very impressive at South Carolina, blowing out the Gamecocks by 30+ points
2. Syracuse- Also extremely impressive at St. John's
3. Ohio State- Sullinger is playing really well and got an impressive win at Wisconsin
4. Missouri- Comeback win over KU, have a good chance to win the Big 12
5. Baylor- Gets a chance at payback against KU and Mizzou this week, need to take advantage of that
6. North Carolina- With Duke losing, the ACC is now North Carolina's for the taking
7. Kansas
8. Michigan State- Impressive win over Michigan today; still have two meetings with Ohio State which will say something about who wins the Big 10
9. Murray State- They may not be one of the Top 10 teams in the country, but they will be a tough out in the Tournament
10. St. Mary's- Not many people see them because they play late at night on the West Coast, but with Delavedova and co. this team has the players to compete
11. Duke- That was embarrassing to lose to Miami at home, a Top 10 team doesn't do that
12. Georgetown
13. Florida- Gators are 9-1 in their last 10 games but have a tough task heading to Rupp this week
14. UNLV- Tough to play at Wyoming with the altitude, the Rebels found out why it is tough to win on the road in the MWC
15. Creighton- Heart-breaking loss at UNI
16. San Diego State- This is very athletic, but do they have the size to compete with the other elite teams
17. Marquette
18. Florida State
19. Wisconsin
20. Mississippi State- Struggled to beat a mediocre Auburn team at home
21. Harvard
22. Southern Miss- The Golden Eagles beat C-USA favorite Memphis and stand alone in first place
23. Virginia- Haven't beaten any of the top 3 in the ACC, so how good are they really?
24. Michigan- Big win against Indiana, but fell on the road to archrival Michigan State
25. Indiana- Hangs on to a spot in my poll with an impressive road win at Purdue

Next 5:

The People's Poll: Week 12 (VOTE HERE!!!!)

February 5, 2012 6:40 pm

1) Kentucky - They weren't really tested this week, with two games against Tennessee and South Carolina. They'll certainly be challenged this week, with games against Florida and @Vanderbilt.

2) Ohio State - Managed to get a win @Wisconsin. They didn't dominate, but that's a nice win.

3) Syracuse - They looked dominant with Melo back, but let's not forget people, that this was St John's. Do that against Louisville or Georgetown and I'll be impressed.

4) Missouri - They defended home court and got a close win over Kansas.

5) Baylor - They've run off a nice four game winning streak, but two huge games against Kansas and Missouri are coming up.

6) Kansas - You can't penalize them too much for losing @Missouri, right?

7) North Carolina - They certainly didn't look very good against Maryland. Why would they move up for that kind of play?

8) Florida - Their win over Vanderbilt was impressive. However, it was at home. We'll get a chance to see if this team is a national contender when they play at Rupp Tuesday.

9) Murray State - This team isn't a Top 10 team. Why do I have them ranked here? They haven't lost, everyone else has.

10) Saint Mary's - They were able to hold up their end of the bargain against San Diego, and that Bracketbuster matchup with Murray State still looks huge.

11) Michigan State - Fourty-two points to Illinois? I'm debating whether I should laugh our... ZZZ...

12) Georgetown - Two blowouts this week make it easy to forget the loss to Pitt.

13) UNLV - Another conference loss to Wyoming drops them out of the Top 10.

14) Florida State - They're playing very well right now, and they jump this much because a whole crap ton of teams lost.

15) Harvard - They continue to win.

16) Marquette - I understand that Notre Dame has played well lately, but is it too much to ask to keep the game close?

17) Duke - Two home losses, one of which was against a very mediocre Miami team. O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D

18) Creighton - They lost a road conference game! Gasp! Nah, they're fine.

19) Mississippi State - Their defense has been porous, and they're letting teams that they're better than hang close. Still, though, they won those games, so they jump up.

20) Indiana - They jump up as a product of many other teams losing.

21) Wisconsin - Kept it close with Ohio State. At this point, that may be enough to rank them.

22) Virginia - A loss @FSU is understandable with they way that FSU has played lately.

23) Louisville - They've found a way to get them back in the Top 25. Will they stay this time?

24) SDSU - They haven't looked very good lately, although they did win both of their games this week.

25) Vanderbilt - They lost a couple of tough road games, and everyone wants to jump back off the bandwagon (again). Well, I'm not.

Just missed: Notre Dame, Middle Tennessee State, Alabama, Michigan, New Mexico

The People's Poll: Week 12 (VOTE HERE!!!!)

February 5, 2012 6:46 pm

It took most of the season, but finally a bit of clarity in my poll.  I initially docked Syracuse when they lost Melo with the intention of moving them back up when he returned.  However, the other top teams each look impressive right now and so I keep the Orange at #3 for now, but they can quickly move up.  The bottom of the poll is still somewhat of a mess, but the teams getting any consideration for ranking has dropped form a high of 75ish early in the season down to 42 this week.

1 Kentucky
2 Ohio State
3 Syracuse Looked good in the return of Melo
4 Missouri Mizzou sent the Columbia half of the Border War out in style.
5 North Carolina
6 Florida Held serve on home court against Vandy.
7 Murray St.
8 Michigan St.
9 Kansas They may have lost to Mizzou, but this is a quality team.
10 Duke Is it time for the Duke/Carolina stranglehold on the ACC to end? Sure looks like it.
11 Baylor Starting to lose confidence in them as a top tier team.
12 Georgetown
13 SD State
14 St. Marys
15 Wisconsin Top teams have to defend their home court.
16 UNLV
17 Mississippi St.
18 Michigan
19 Marquette
20 Creighton
21 Indiana
22 Harvard
23 Virginia
24 Vanderbilt
25 BYU

Next 5:
26 New Mexico
27 Florida State Don't get me wrong, what they've done in the ACC is great, but I can't completely overlook their non-conference play.
28 Illinois
29 Alabama
30 Gonzaga

The People's Poll: Week 12 (VOTE HERE!!!!)

February 5, 2012 6:52 pm

1. Kentucky-Anthony Davis is now arguably only behind T-Rob for POY. Their perfect record in the SEC will be challenged this week with games against Florida and Vandy.

2. Syracuse-Looked a little weak without Melo but he’s back now, so no worries. The 2-3 zone should be functioning properly again.

3. Ohio State-Buford showed why he is still Ohio State’s most clutch shooter, despite some struggles recently, in the game against Wisconsin.

4. Missouri-They can look hectic and unorganized when challenged, but they weathered the storm against Kansas.

5. Baylor-I think they are vulnerable to losing early in the tournament. But as far as the rest of the season goes, they have something to prove. I’m predicting that they take down both Kansas and Mizzou this week.

6. Kansas-I’m starting to get the feeling that Robinson is over-confident, he needs to pass the rock a little more, because he’s got some terrific role players around him.

7. North Carolina-Great rebounding, lax defense. It’s been the same story the whole season for UNC. Maryland was hitting a bunch of shots against them on Saturday.

8. Murray State-Shoved SEMO aside after getting down early on.

9. Georgetown-Sims is the glue for this team. They added to UConn’s miseries and then crushed South Florida. But Thompson will be sweating puddles in the upcoming Game of the Week at Syracuse.

10. Florida State-This team is on an absolute tear, and they have some depth too. Interesting team for sure.

11. Duke-Didn’t see the game against Miami but those 6 missed free throws in OT must’ve been cringe-worthy. Ouch.

12. Creighton-Very flexible team, great front court, great passing team, I’ll give them a pass for the loss to Northern Iowa.

13. Michigan State-Ugly game against Illinois but they beat Michigan. The Big 10 is a wacky conference this year.

14. UNLV-That Wyoming team was ready to play. The Mountain West is a tough little conference.

15. St. Mary’s-Wow, this team just refuses to lose. I only saw them once but was pretty impressed with what I saw. Can’t discount them against anyone.

16. Marquette-I LOVE this team, I don’t really care about the loss to Notre Dame. They can handle the rock terrifically, and I see them as a potential Final Four team.

17. Florida-I’m still not on this team’s bandwagon but they got a key win against Vanderbilt.

18. Virginia-They’re a good team, but I they’ve definitely been surpassed by Florida State.

19. San Diego State-They have to go to Vegas this week, keep an eye on that.

20. Wisconsin-What they lack in raw talent, they make up for with experience and good coaching.

21. Notre Dame-Brey is obviously getting a lot of the credit for this team’s recent surge.

22. Harvard-I still think the Crimson are vulnerable against a good defense. They really don’t have to worry about that too much at the moment though.

22. Wichita State-Floating under the radar right now.

23. Mississippi State-Still managing to hang in there, the game against Auburn was close though.

24. Temple-They’ve been playing well lately, and they do have that win over Duke on their resume.

25. Iowa State-Three nice wins in a row against Kansas, Kansas State, and Oklahoma.

16. Marquette-I LOVE this team, I don’t really care about the loss to Notre Dame. They can handle the rock terrifically, and I see them as a potential Final Four team.

17. Florida-I’m still not on this team’s bandwagon but they got a key win against Vanderbilt.

Just wondering - why aren't you sold on Florida? There is a difference between being on someone's bandwagon and ranking them unusually low. Florida KILLED Florida State. I understand that Florida State has played great lately, but over Florida? That doesn't make sense. Because, if you want to use Florida's losses against Tennessee and Rutgers against them, you have to use Florida State's losses against Princeton and Clemson against them. Also, Marquette? Over Florida? I'm not trying to call you out on it, I'm just wondering why you aren't sold on them.

February 5, 2012 8:37 pm

So do I, as I don't think Florida is a Top 2 Seed at the moment. Also, I don't think Florida State is a 4 seed, nor is Murray State a 3
Seed, nor is Harvard a 4 seed. I'm just wondering why you think Florida isn't deserving of even being in the Top 16.
Here's my problem with Florida...even if you take away the Ohio St and Syracuse games (which I will since they are both top 5 teams), Florida is still .500 (2-2) on the road.  This team has to prove they can beat people outside of Gainsville for me to seriously consider them (I know they are 3-0 in neutral games, but all were outside the top 100 RPI and nothing special).

All of that said, I have at #6 (which I think may be too high), but with the schedule they have coming up, we should find out if they are legit or not.

Compare that to the team you were complaining about, Marquette.  They have 4 top 100 wins on a road or neutral court.  They also have 0 losses to teams outside the top 100.  Even though they have 1 more loss, they do look better on paper in many ways.  When comparing teams like this, it is going to come down to personal belief (aka "Eye test") and of course a Florida fan is going to put them higher than Marquette.  That doesn't mean everyone else should.

The People's Poll: Week 12 (VOTE HERE!!!!)

February 5, 2012 9:48 pm

It would appear that the Final Four will consist of Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State, and Syracuse IF they play at their very best in March.  Having said that, I think the overall quality of college hoops this year is pretty mediocre.  Most of the ranked teams play very well at home, then seem to cough up a hair ball now and then on the road.  If the aforementioned four fall into the mediocrity the majority of their conference brethren have displayed on occasion, March Madness could truly register as many surprises as we saw last season.

1.   Kentucky--Wildcats played the beach bully this week as they had their way with Tennessee and South Carolina.  Four crucial tests remain with Florida and Vanderbilt.
2.   Ohio State--Buckeyes won their only game at a 'not-so-formidable-at-home-anymore' Wisconsin team.
3.   Syracuse--Melo returned to the Orange lineup, which proceeded to make St. John's blush with envy.
4.   North Carolina--A couple of road wins for the Tar Heels at Wake Forest and Maryland.  Good thing Syracuse and Pittsburgh will be joining soon; the ACC looks to be on the verge of becoming what the Pac-12 is.
5.   Baylor--Bears scraped by Texas A & M on the road before doing what Missouri could not do--beat Oklahoma State in Stillwater.
6.   Missouri--Dramatics aplenty for the Tigers, who beat Texas by 1 in Austin before knocking off Kansas at the buzzer at home.
7.   Murray State--Even though it is the Ohio Valley Conference, the Racers are getting the best shot from their conference foes; an 8-point home win against Southeast Missouri followed by a 7-point road win against Tennessee-Martin.
8.   Florida--Beating South Carolina at home was no big deal.  Turning back Vanderbilt at home was.
9.   Kansas--Jayhawks wasted Oklahoma at home, then wasted a chance for a critical road win against Missouri.
10. Florida State--Those embarrassing non-conference losses seem so long ago and far away.  Lookee who's tied atop the ACC table with North Carolina.
11. St. Mary's--Just one game for the Gaels this week; a safe 11-point win over San Diego before they head up to Spokane for a critical contest with Gonzaga.
12. San Diego State--Aztecs sweat out a 2-point home win against Boise State before fighting off TCU by 10.
13. Georgetown--Hoyas played exceptional defense in recording home wins over Connecticut and South Florida.
14. Duke--Solid road win over Virginia Tech morphed into a 'WTH happened' home loss to Miami of Florida.
15. Michigan State--Spartans lost what may very well be the ugliest game of the year--42-41 at Illinois.  They turned around to beat Michigan at home by 10.
16. Nevada-Las Vegas--Played very well at home in routing Colorado State, then ran into a jacked up Wyoming team and lost by 2 in Laramie.
17. Creighton--Blue Jays shot lights out in mauling Illinois State, then couldn't find the basket with a service dog in a nail-biting loss at Northern Iowa.
18. Louisville--The Cardinals had their "North Carolina" moment in a 31-point loss at Providence last month.  Looks like they're starting to get back in the groove now.
19. Southern Mississippi--Golden Eagles avenged an earlier close loss to Memphis as they beat the Tigers by 3 at home.
20. Harvard--Crimson didn't exactly set the nets on fire against Cornell and Columbia, but they won.  Like Kentucky, they have 4 games left with conference stalwarts--in this case, Princeton and Pennsylvania.
21. Virginia--The Old Dominion is known for its hams, but you won't find any on this team.  Like their coach and his staff, the players work on every possession when they have the ball and they make their opponents do the same.
22. Mississippi State--For this week anyway, the elevator is "going up" for the Bulldogs.
23. Wichita State--Thanks to Creighton's stumble in Cedar Falls, the Wheatshockers are now tied atop the Missouri Valley heap.
24. Temple--The Owls may not be as good as last year's outfit, but in a competitive and topsy turvy Atlantic 10 season, they lead the pack.
25. Virginia Commonwealth--Don't look now, but the Rams are 20-5 and are one of three teams atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings.

Dropped Out:  Marquette, Wisconsin, Oral Roberts, Vanderbilt, Minnesota
Dropped In:  Louisville, Mississippi State, Wichita State, Temple, Virginia Commonwealth

To Consider:  The State of Iowa has four D-1 programs, and it's possible that none of them will make the NCAA field of 68 next month.  Still, every one of them has at least one victory over teams that may very well participate in the 2012 edition of March Madness.  Northern Iowa beat Creighton, Drake beat Wichita State, Iowa State beat Kansas, and Iowa beat both Wisconsin and Michigan and swept Minnesota--pretty crazy, huh?

The People's Poll: Week 12 (VOTE HERE!!!!)

February 5, 2012 10:45 pm

1. Kentucky- They look to be taking things to another gear. This week will probably be one of the most challenging they have had all year.
2. Syracuse- Fab Melo's return seemed to make a big difference. Almost dropped 100 on St. John's.
3. Ohio State- Ask any Big Ten team how tough it is to win in the Kohl Center especially with Wisconsin playing well. Buckeyes found a way.
4. Missourri- Showed some guts in coming back to beat Kansas. They are by themselves in the driver's seat in the Big 12.
5. North Carolina- I'm not sure when or if this team is going to have a game where they fire on all cylinders. They win but leave a lot to be desired.
6. Baylor- Still not sure what to make of them? Join the club. This week will be an indicator of whether or not they can challenge for the Big 12 crown.
7. Michigan St.- Got a win over an up and down Michigan team. Good to get the taste of the Illinois defeat out of their mouths.
8. Kansas- Let a golden opportunity slip away. You simply have to finish off teams. Jayhawks got outscored 13-0  by Mizzou down the stretch.
9. Murray State- They don't look like a top 10 team but they still continue to win.  That meeting with St. Mary's will be huge for them.
10. Georgetown- Hoyas may be the second best team in the Big East behind Syracuse. Should be a fun matchup between the two on Wednesday.
11. Florida- A team that had some puzlling defeats but is getting it turned around without much national recognition. They will definitely get some if they can beat Kentucky in Rupp this week.
12. Duke- They remind you more and more each week of a team you can't trust during March. Losing to a bad Miami team only gives credence to that argument.
13. Saint Mary's- They continue to move up. Could their matchup with Murray St. be a battle of top 10 teams? Not looking too far fetched at the moment.
14. Misssissipi St.- Looked totally uninterested in playing defense against an Auburn team that is improving but still not very good.
15. Creighton- Tough to lose on a last second shot on the road. All in all not a big deal and it should light a fire under them.
16. Marquette- Is Notre Dame really that good? Golden Eagles got smacked around by the suddenly on fire Fighting Irish.
17. UNLV- I don't know that people really how good of a defensive coach Larry Shyatt is at Wyoming. I know UNLV isn't going to forget any time soon after losing to the Cowboys this past week.
18. Florida St.- They are the surprise leader in the ACC after another impressive win over Virginia. FSU has seemingly put the early season struggles behind them.
19. Southern Miss- This team, despite its lack of size seems to have a hold on the top spot in C-USA by beating Memphis.
20. Wisconsin- Badgers showed they can play with anybody on their home floor. Couldn't put together the upset of Ohio St. but they still are playing much better as of late.
21. Michigan- They looked very good in strecthes against Indiana but not so great at times in East Lansing against Michigan St. Kind of the story of the season for the Wolverines.
22. Indiana- Just when you thought the Hoosiers were headed for a late season collapse they pull together and get a very impressive road win over Purdue.
23. Louisville- OK so they have shown they can beat some mediocre Big East teams as well as the bottom feeders. Still hard to figure out how much of a threat they are overall in the conference race.
24. Harvard- You just can't seem to keep this team out of the top 25. Tommy Amaker is atoning for all the underacheiving he did at Michigan.
25. Virginia- Tough loss against Florida St. You still have to think this team's defense will give it a chance in every game they play this year.

The People's Poll: Week 12 (VOTE HERE!!!!)

February 6, 2012 12:33 am

Well here goes!  Pats lose :(  so bring on the Red Sox now!

1. Kentucky - Fantastic week!
2. Syracuse - Wants #1 back with that crushing St. John's win
3. Ohio St. - Played a heck of a game in Wisconsin
4. Baylor - Close games this week, but won 'em both
5. Missouri - Almost switched them and Baylor, but I think Baylor is a slight tad better.
6. North Carolina - I'm ready to see if this team can dominate or fall flat.
7. Murray St. - You keep winning, and did one of the most impressive comebacks this whole year.
8. Florida - Playing amazingly well, you deserve the top ten!
9. Kansas - Best 5 loss team, but can't afford to lose much more, a #1 seed is getting difficult.
10. Michigan St. - Play like crap one game, then play very well against in-state rival.  go figure.
11. UNLV - Wyoming proved they wanna be more than a bubble team, and Rebels only lost by 2 so I didn't punish them much
12. Duke - I really hate Duke (and i'm laughing at their Miami loss)
13. Harvard - I'm still probably the only one that has them ranked this high
14. St Mary's - winning like mad and looking like a top ten team, can they keep going?
15. Georgetown - Needed a good week, and got it.
16. San Diego St. - Turned it around and got some wins
17. Creighton - No Iowa is better than their record shows, but Creighton is still a great team that should win MVC.
18. Virginia - 4 losses, all close.  I think they need to play for more points.
19. Mississippi St. - Inched in my top 20 again.
20. Marquette - Still playing well despite falling asleep against Irish in 2nd half.
21. Florida St. - They're hot, so I've got them in my top 25
22. Indiana - When you chew gum with foil wrapper still attached, it's gonna hurt if you have braces or fillings!
23. Louisville - Team bores me but they're back on the winning track.
24. Gonzaga - No shame losing to a decent BYU squad but needs to win out to hopefully get another WCC title.
25. Wisconsin - Good game with OSU, still a fairly good team and hangs in my top 25 but an inch.
