Clemson a pivotal game....

February 5, 2012 5:21 pm

Ok we've lost through the tough part of the schedule. But, and but, based on the near-wins we've had, and not getting embarrassed, and the resurgence of Len, I'd say this game is very winnable. And I say we finally get a road win.  Lose to Duke, NC again, and at VA. We get payback against Miami at home, beat GT on the road. Let's see what's left. Oh yeah BC and Va at home probably take BC and perhaps upset VA I'm not sold on them just yet. There's your 7-9 Acc and NIT record. I base this on the tough play vs recent competition.

I like it.
I was thinking a split betwen the two road games with Clemson and GT.
Would love to see it start with Clemson.
I'm with you on UVA.  I could see us splitting that too.
BC scares me, I hate what looks like a sure thing Smile.

Clemson a pivotal game....

February 6, 2012 8:26 am

I havent decided on the Clemson game yet, but if they are going to get a road win this year then certainly one or both of those two games are the best chance. What I think generally is the first one is the hardest to get. If they get the one at Clemson then there is a much better chance of taking both, and if they lose at Clemson then in their minds it is more of the same, and they aren't really confident that they can win on the road this year at all.

They now know that they can play with anyone at home, and need to get over the hump of throwing it away at the end. If they can get to the end of the game and preserve a few time outs, I believe Mark will be able to take it a step at a time, stopping the game between possessions to explain how to win, paint by the numbers if you will. This could also be helped if they had a couple experienced, on court generals, ie PG's, that he could substitute in and out with plays to run at the end. We do not have that luxury right now. I really think Faust is going to have to be that secondary PG on next years team, and hopefully Mark is looking at possibly a juco player to fill that essential role.

The road is a different story once you add in the hostile crowd and unfamiliar backdrop to the basket, student sections etc. Until you do it and can look back and see it was not impossible, then you only hope you can do it. you can tell when teams come into comcast that some of them expect to win or at least know they can win on the road, and some cant.

BC scares me, I hate what looks like a sure thing Smile.
See yesterday's Duke vs Miami game at Cameron.  Florida St. is one thing, but there's no way the Blue Devils thought they would lose to the Canes in Durham...which is probably why they lost.  Crazy, particularly since the Canes had trouble putting the Terps away in Miami.  Sounds like the atmosphere inside Cameron ain't what it used to be; can consistent winning actually become boring?!?

Don't see us winning at Clemson, but I also thought we'd get buried big time by the Heels, so what the hell do I know?!?  Beating Georgia Tech in ATL seems plausible as does winning against BC & Miami at home.  I'm uncertain about our ability to beat UVA even once this year given their shutdown D; even without Sene, they gave Fl St. all they could handle on the road in a really well-played contest Sat.

I sure hope Duke finds a way to beat the Tar Heels on Wednesday night or the Terps will be in for a major beating on Sat.

But life is good today because the New York Football Giants won their 8th title last night and beat that cheater Belichick for the third straight time!

Has anyone else been impressed with Padgett? In the past few years and even still this year every time he gets the ball down on the block I yell "NOOOOO!" He looks like he walks all the time but yet the ball manages to go in the basket. Ive been very happy with his progress each year he's played which is what a good player should do. Next year he should be even better!

As for the Clemson game you never know which Maryland team will show up. I actually think the Miami and the UNC loss gives the team confidence that they'll feed on, on Tuesday. Big boys (fatty's if you will) down low tend to beat us up so Im worried about Booker. Defend the three point line and cut out the silly turnover's and I think the Terps will win by 11 on the road. Finally a complete game on the road!

Good analysis Skins...yeah it's like the 4 min mile barrier no one thought it could be done. Once done, all of a sudden it happened a lot. We're doing the 4:10 mile right now against the better teams. 4:10 MAy seem close to 4:00 but if you see the race at the end, the guy that's :10 behind is way back there lol. Mosley is gone next year..so that leaves Pshon at point? I'm not too comfy with that. I'd personally like to see Faust become more of a scorer to balance out Stoglin, but there's something about Stoglin that tells me he ain't gonna change very much. Clemson is not a horrible team: they are 3-5 just like us even caught FL St napping, plus they are at home on a 2-gm losing streak like us. I don't like the timing as they probably will be focused, but it is what it is, a good test again. But at least they don't have 2 starters 6'10+ in there. This is like the VT game...win it and buy some more confidence/hope for decent acc standing. Lose, go to 3-6, then 3-7 at Duke: goodbye NIT even. Even the annoucer at the NC game said we don't have "bad" losses. I'm ok with that too but let's get this one!

Good example of how close losses are not alway almost wins terpo. The NIT is harder to get in than it used to be and not that many teams make it. They tend to lean toward the good schools in conferences that usually only get one bid to the NCAA, so to get invited you usually need a big or at least a good win. I really think if the terps finish with 6 wins, and can get at least one road win, they will get the feel good invite to show that the GW era is truly over.

They didn't like Gary, and who can blame them. He openly thumbed his nose at them and even turned down an invite until Yow made him go one year where the guy known for sweating through a suit in the firt 5 minutes, calmly sat on the bench while his team went out in the first round. I think they will be more than willing to give Turgeon a chance, and <arl should be overjoyed if they call.

We should have our way with Clemson on the inside. I don't think there are many guys on that team that will take the ball right out of Lens hands nea the rim like Duke or UNC did. But winning on the road is all about composure and until we show some down the stretch of an away game we will be behind the 8 ball. I personally thing that we beat UVA the last game of the year. It will be senior night and though UVA will probably be playing for a NCAA berth, I think we have enough guys lay it on the line to get it done, and maybe big. So BC, UVA, and lets say for fun GT away, and we set ourselves up for a NIT bid. At that point they will be watching th ACC tournament cosely to see how we do on a neutral court. Yo ucan do much worse than finishing the season in MSG.

Something is wrong here lol. Skins is actually predicting that we will "have our way" with an acc team? On the road? 2001 predicting a DD win? OK...I will once again wear my raggy old Terps shirt today...the always-lose jinx. The only way the jinx is broken is if at least 3 of our board members predict a win. So far it's me and 2001. Skins I don't think you will go so far as to say we will actually get this one. Clemson has some parallels to us...one of them being is that they're not getting blown out by anyone, always there with the (gulp) near win. I can see this one going to the final minute. Win this one we remain in that 3rd tier, lose and we're only one game over the cellar dwellers.

Dont be like the local journalists and only print part of a statement. i said we would have our way inside as Clemson does not have the length that some of the other guys have had against us, so Len will probably not have rebounds taken out of his hands as he has against Duke, FLSt and UNC. Don't get crazy . I still think we lose the game, but if they ae going to win a road game it could be this one. Clemson also should be desperate at home after a few losses. Until we get to the end of a close road game an play solid defense while workign the ball to get something other than a wild 3pt attempt, no I cannot predict a win.

For me its all good form here as we already have the number of wins I thought we would get all year and we still have several winnable games left. We probably don't win them all, but there are winnable games to be battled.

Look out for Nick Faust to have a good game tonight. He is learning how the ACC works, I'm expecting 15 at least from him.

Probably wrong, but hey, I felt like making a prediction. Also, Terps lose a close one on the road tonight...tough place to play.

February 7, 2012 6:37 pm

Maryland will win tonight! I'm not calling this, but I think they will actually do it easily with a "breakout" game.

Clemson has lost 11 games! Maryland has done well against teams that are beatable. Maryland has played well since the Duke game and I feel like the pieces will fall into place tonight...better than they have all year.

Len has played purposefully lately, and I believe that will continue tonight.

I have grown into the "they're about middle of the pack" crowd. The players, and Coach T, have exceeded my pre-season expectations, and I see nothing that says they will digress.

Mouly boldly stepping out!  Your uncharacteristic prediction is looking pretty good right now (with approx. 14 min. left in the 2nd half).  Of course, the usual time period for the Terps' meltdown/dry spell/implosion/etc. is still looming in the not-too-distant future Undecided.

That was the luckiest ruling ever. Mosely tried to give them a chance but the officials were not having it. LOL. Because the ball was never officially in bounds it was no play and goes back to the last place it was legally in bounds. If he had not touched it, it still would have gone back to that spot, but it would have been MD's ball. You have ot know where you are on the court. He made plenty of other good enior plays to get this win, but damn. When Faust got hacked and there was no call, and then we fouled an 88% FT shooter in the act of shooting a 3, you just knew they had found a way to lose again.

Len reverted back to a non factor but Stoglin just cannot be stopped. I really thought in ACC play othe teams would key on him and sht**** him down and the rest of the team would not be able to take up the slack but other teams just can't stop the leadinf scorer in the nation among major conference players.

They did not show composure and the did not really finish. They were frantic and missed FT, but so did Clemson and they found a way to hang on. Sometimes that is what you ahve to do to get the first one, and then withe the pressure off you more easily do it the next time. This is one I did not count among possible wins. With 4 wins I think they do have a chance to get 6, and if they do they really should be in consideration for an NIT berth.

Congratulation Mark Turgeon and the MD Terrapins on your first road win of the year, and first of the coaches hopefully long and successful MD tenure.

Over the hump, baby!!  They held on/won in spite of themselves; even Mosley made a bonehead play at the end to give Clemson another shot at winning!  Regardless, the Terps now know what it feels like to not piss away a lead completely...and on the road to boot!  6-7 wins in conference may be doable afterall.  Wasn't pretty, but we'll take whatever we can get this season.  Duke/UNC should be entertaining tomorrow night.

Sweet! We're all familiar with the 2nd half meltdown this season but they still managed to get the W.

I looked at the acc schedule in December and was guessing a 5-11 year. I'm thinking they've got a really good shot to win 6, or possibly even 7 conference games now. That is no small feat for the team we watched through november and december.  I think our new Coach T is doing a great job with this team up to this point.

Mostly I'm just happy that the team has been competitive against almost all comers (minus the Alabama and Iona game). Also mac0330 congrats to your Giants on the Superbowl win, love to see brady and belichick cry. Giants were clearly the better team.
