3rd Annual Pick 3 - Daytona 500

February 6, 2012 8:34 pm

Welcome back to the 3rd Annual Pick 3 Challenge. After two very successful seasons, I thought I would bring back the Pick 3 game for a 3rd season. I know we are still a few weeks away from the Daytona 500, but this game has been pretty popular over the past couple of years, and the earlier I can get people to sign up the better. I've already created my spreadsheet that I will be using to keep track of all the scores for the entire year, but I need to start adding players to it. So, if you want to play, please either make your picks now, or just reply to this thread to let me know that you are in, that way I can start getting everything put together.

Last years winner was rb18, and he tells me that he is ready to defend his title. I've already created a new website that I will be using to post all the current Results and latest Standings on. You can also check out the Standing from 2009 & 2010 on the site as well. Just an FYI, I've put a small security on the site as to try to avoid any hackers, so you will need the link to view it. I believe you can either just click on the link, or you can copy and paste it to your URL, and you should be good to go. If you have any problems viewing the site, let me know and I will try to address that issue.
Here is the link: https://sites.google.com/site/3rdan
nualpick3/
Make sure to save it to your favorites for easy access.

Also, last year one of our players stepped up to offer a prize for our winner, which was a 2001 Action Collectible Jeff Gordon Die Cast Car. Thank you to our secret Santa for that prize, but now since this game (and others here on CBS) is not sponsored by CBS, I'm looking to see if there is anybody else who would like to offer up a prize. Just let my Promotions Dept. (me) know, and we'll go from there.

Lastly, once again this year Danny_49 has offered to help me out in running this game with the day-to-day stuff. He will be helping me keep track of the picks, make sure they are "Legal", answer questions you might have, a help out with the scoring. He is a Youth Pastor at a church in the Charlotte area, and has a very busy Sunday as you can imagine. We both have a lot going on, and since we run this game on our personal time, we've agreed that we will try to have all scores updated and posted on the website by the Monday evening following the race weekend, and I will post a new thread for the next weeks race by Tuesday.

The following posts below will have the latest (updated) rules, with only a few changes from last year, and the new Tiers of Cars/Drivers available for the Daytona 500. If you have any questions regarding this game, please post them here, and I will try to answer them as quickly as possible.

Thanks again for playing, and I look forward to chatting with all of you thoughout the season here on the Pick 3 thread.

Good Luck everyone!

3rd Annual Pick 3 - Daytona 500

February 6, 2012 8:35 pm

Welcome to Week #1 of the 3rd Annual Pick 3 Challenge. After what seemed like a very short off season, we are now headed back to Daytona for the biggest race of the year. Please be sure to read all the game rules, as I've added some new twists to the game, and additional opportunities to earn some valuable Bonus points. Below you will find a link to the new website for this years game where I will be posting all the up-to-date Results and Standings: 3rd Annual Pick 3

So without further delay, here are the rules for Pick 3 2012:

You will get 3 Picks, hence the name of the game. Your picks are Winner, Chaser & Crasher. We will be choosing drivers from two tiers of drivers created from the official Owners Points. Your Winner pick can be any driver from either Tier, but you can only choose one driver from Tier #1 for either your Winner or Chasher pick. You can however choose a 2nd driver from Tier #1 if you use them as your Crasher pick. By doing this, you are able to make some BOLD predictions, if you think one of the top drivers is going to have a bad race. So here's one way to earn Bonus points. If you choose a driver from Tier #1 as your Crasher, and he is the worse finisher out of both Tiers, you will get an additional 25 Bonus Points added to your weekly score.

Game Segments:
The game will be broken down into 3 Segments, Races #1 thru #13 is Segment #1, Races # 14 thru #26 is Segment #2 and races #27 thru #36 will be Segment #3 or The Chase. There will be an overall winner for each Segment, and a Season Overall Winner as well. The top 3 winners from Segments 1,2 & The Chase will get bonus points added to their Overall score for the season. (Leader = 100 pts., 2nd place = 75 pts., 3rd place =50 pts.) If there is a tie, they will both get the points. This will be the same as last years game.

Available Drivers (Tiers):
For the First 5 races, we will be using the final 2011 Owners points to determine both Tiers of drivers. This year the list of Drivers* will be in Tiers. Tier #1 will always be the current T-12 drivers in Owner Points. The number of drivers available to use in Tier #2 will be adjusted each Segment. (see chart below)
Segment #1: Tier #1 Drivers 1-12 & Tier #2 Drivers 13-30.
Segment #2: Tier #1 Drivers 1-12 & Tier #2 Drivers 13-26.
Segment #3: Tier #1 Drivers 1-12 & Tier #2 Drivers 13-22.

* Drivers in this case actually are cars, meaning that it's actually the Owners Points for the car, not the driver. Which means that for various reasons drivers can change in particular car numbers.

Scoring:
The points awarded by NASCAR for the drivers finish will be used for the scoring of this game. This also includes any bonuses awarded by NASCAR for leading laps and leading most laps. The driver selected in the Winner Group will be awarded the entire amount of points. The driver in the Chaser Group will be awarded the entire amount of points divided by 2, or half the points earned during the race. The Crasher group will earn the entire points earned on the track, but that amount will be subtracted from the sum of the Winner and Chaser Groups.

Here is an example:
Winner: Jimmie Johnson Finished 2nd + lead a lap (42+1=43 pts.)
Chaser: A.J Allmendinger Finished 17th (27 pts.)
Crasher:  Paul Menard Finished 20th + lead a lap (24+1=25 pts.)

Winner (43)+ Chaser(27/2=13.5)=56.5
56.5 minus Crasher (25) = 31.5

Your total points earned for this race would've been 31.5 pts. As you returning players can see, the scores this year will be much lower than the totals from last year, which is why I've reduced the amount of the Bonus Points earn to be more relative to the 2011 Nascar Points System.

Bonus Points:
There will be three (3) ways to earn Bonus Points each week:
1. As stated above, if you choose a Tier #1 driver as your Crasher, and he is the worst finisher from both Tiers of drivers, you can earn 25 Bonus Points.

2. If you choose a driver from Tier #2 as your "Winner", and he does in fact win the race, your can earn 25 Bonus Points. If he Wins & Leads the Most Laps, you can earn an additional 5 pts. for a total of 30 Bonus Points.

3*. New this year, I will be awarding Bonus Points for making it onto the Podium each week. The Podium consists of the top 3 scores (including Bonus Points) each week. First Place will earn an additional 10 pts., 2nd Place gets 5 pts. while 3rd Place earns a 3 pt. Bonus. These points will be added to the Overall Score for whichever Segment we are currently in. If there is a tie for any or all of the top 3 positions on the Podium, each player will earn the Bonus Points.

During each segment, you will only be able to miss TWO weeks to be considered for the Final Standings. If you forget, or are unable to make your picks on any given week, "Random" picks will be made for you. The "Random" picks will come from the same list of drivers available to pick from each week. The picks will be "Random" to a certain degree, but I will keep track of which drivers were used, as to not repeat any drivers until all available have been used. There also could be more than one driver from the T-12 in these picks. One more note, if anyone submits illegal picks, I will try to get ahold of you to make corrections, but if no changes are made, you will earn the points from the Random picks list. For example, if you choose David Ragan for your Chasher, but he is not listed in either Tier of drivers available, I will replace Kasey Kahne with whoever the "Random" Chasher pick is for that week, and you will earn the points from that driver. A final note here as well, if you know you are going to be unavailable to make picks for the following week, you can give me your picks in advance, as my spreadsheet is already created for the entire season.

All picks must be posted or e-mailed to me before the Green Flag drops to be considered legal. If the start of the race is delayed for any reason, you will still be able to submit your picks until the race has officially started. This could change if I or Danny are not around to monitor the start of the race, in such a case, all picks will need to be submitted by what Nascar posts as the Official Start Time of the race.

Thanks again for participating, and I will do my best to keep all scores and standings accurate and posted by the Tuesday after the race. You will be able to find all the Results and Standings on the Pick 3 website I've created.
Here is the link to that site: 3rd Annual Pick 3
You might want to save this link to your favorites for easy access.

I know this was a lot of information for anybody who may be new this year, but if you have any questions about this game, please feel free to ask.

Good Luck everyone.

I'm IN Coach!!!  Great to have you and Danny back for another year.  Also, did I see where a tier 1 driver can not be used as a chaser, only a winner or crasher?

I'll wait till we get closer to make picks.  Thanks and good luck this year.

RR...the rules states that you can use a Tier #1 driver as your Winner OR Chaser, which is the same as last year. The rule is that you just can't use a Tier #1 driver for BOTH Winner AND Chaser. The only exception is that you can use a 2nd Tier #1 driver as your Crasher pick. That is the same as last year.

Glad to have you back.

Brad....I know you are busy with school, but I think we'll be able to find you some sponsorship to get in the game again this year.

Fore, I might need that 11th hour help, but right now I have my people talking to the Carl Edwards camp.  I'm thinking he might be able to part with one of his 400 sponsors!

Ah yes....the Champ has showed up! Welcome back rb18!

I would wish you good luck, but you obviously don't need any luck from me after a 2nd place finish in Season 1, and a 1rst place finish in Season 2. Well, good luck anyway, and I'm glad you're back.
