Did the Giants D get jobbed AGAIN?
-
In the first Pats vs Giants Super Bowl, the Giants Defense got the royal screw job when none of them, or more correctly all of them should have won the MVP. Instead the Most Valuable Quarterback award as it should now be called, went to a barely effective Eli Manning. Why? Were all the defensive players too good that no one stood out? Was it because his name was Manning?
-
Who knows, and although Eli did perform exceedingly well in the Part II Pats vs Giants, the difference once again was that amazing Giants Defense.
-
So, did the Giants Defensive players get screwed over again?
-
Yes, twice screwed
-
Yes, this time not last
-
Potato Salad for MVP
-
No, This time, last time, Yes
-
No, Eli deserved both
-
Brady, Brady, Brady! - MVP should have gone to Brady because I am a Brady jock remora and believe Brady has never did anything wrong, like loosing in the biggest game in football, TWICE!
-
Peyton Manning should have got the Super Bowl MVP, his not playing this year is the reason these teams got to play.

Personally, I think that the MVP should have went to a defensive player both times, and maybe multiple in both, but I can also see the argument that Eli deserved this one. In no known universe where I am not as brain damaged as a Ravens fan though can I see where he deserved the first one.

the most pointless award in the history of the NFL is superbowl MVP

i remember for brady's two (and this has more to do w/ living in NE than hating brady), there was alot of talk that vrable should've got one........who i think had a TD, sack and forced fumble....something like that, only player in superbowl history to do that.......and branch should've had the other, i think he broke a record that game (then he ended up getting the third)

Peyton Manning no way should've had his

Say what you will, but I believe that Steve Weatherford should have received some votes as well.  He pinned 3 punts inside the five and a fourth nearly got downed by his gunner missed the ball on the bounce.

I don't know why they even still pretend someone other than the winning team's QB is going to win.

No Giants defensive player deserved it

Chase Blackburn had that interception - and also got embarrassed on an Aaron Hernandez touchdown
Justin Tuck had two sacks - both of which were slow developing plays set up by stunts and the secondary
Michael Boley had 9 tackles - and sucked in coverage

YAWN......

Eli gets the first Supe MVP a few years back because he's the only quarterback in NFL history to lead two  come from behind +80 yard touchdown drives in the 4th quarter of a Superbowl.  And the defense (which was awesome) couldnt hold the lead late and got carved up by Brady giving up the go-ahead touchdown with under three minutes left.  So the defense which performed outstanding went to the sideline and said..."Eli, please bail us out"!  He did.

Eli gets his second Supe MVP because he was 30/40 for just under 300 yards with 1td/0 ints and he led an 89 yard 4th quarter come from behind winning td again.  We're not talkin Ben against the Seahawks here.   Everyone knew you could shut the tv off when Eli got the ball with just under 4 minutes left in the game Sunday.  But people stayed tuned in just to see how he would carve the Pats up.  Those who stayed tuned in were treated to one of the best pass/catches in Supe history on the first play from scrimmage at the Giants 11 yard line.

There is one legit strike against Eli's MVP credential however.  He moved the ball down the field to quick and scored with a minute left.  He gobbled up 89 yards in a blink of an eye.  Needs to manage the clock better.  Can't just dice up a defense like that and not watch the clock.

In the first SB, no way Eli has a chance if the Giants defense doesn't hold that explosive Pats offense to 14 points. That was the highest scoring offense in NFL history, and it got held to 14. Give me a break.

I think Eli deserved it this time.  There were really no defensive players that stood out as having huge game and they really didn't dominate the game like they did in 2007.  In 2007 I think so many defensive guys had huge games that they really couldn't single one out to name the MVP so they gave it to Eli instead.  He had a great 4th quarter in the first Super Bowl but someone on the D-line should have been the MVP of that game.

True,  and theres no way the Giants win if Eli isnt the only quarterback in NFL history to lead two +80 yard come from behind 4th quarter td drives.  See how this works?  The Giants defense was spectacular and there is no way they win that game without pressure from the front four.  However,  Tuck, Strahan and Osi all played a roll in the pressure on Brady and the Pats.  But the MVP goes to one player, and that player had to be Eli.  He was the guy with 2:37 seconds left that stood between 18-0 and NFL immortality.  And he derailed them, with alot of help of course.

They could have given it to Strahan as a kind of "lifetime achievement award" - but he wouldn't have deserved it

The Giants d-line probably deserved it in '07 but Eli deserved it this time. The Patriots stopped themselves more than the Giants D did this time. Giants had a 15 minute edge in TOP due to Eli converting big 3rd downs and once again Eli engineered the GW driveYell. Despite the big edge in TOP for the Giants the Pats offense put up almost the same totals as the Giants offense. If not for some key drops the Pats O does more than the Giants in less time and the outcome is probably different.

This was also a case of how the yardage allowed by the Pats D did matter. Even when they got stops it was after allowing a few 1st downs and ended up being huge in terms of field position. Patriots started almost every drive deep in their own territory and Weatherford was huge.

Who cares who got the MVP.  The Patriots lost and that is all that matters.

But I have no problem with Eli getting the MVP in either game.  It is a Quarterback driven league and game.  Who would you have given the MVP to?  You can't give it to the entire defensive unit.  QB's touch the ball the most, get blamed if teams lose and the most credit if they win.  It is the same reason that the regular season MVP is so often the QB.  That position just stands out more than any other.  If I would have given it to anyone besides Manning it would have been Manningham for that great catch or Nicks who had a very productive game.  Nobody on the defense stood out on their own in my eyes.

Defensive players rarely get MVP's or any other football awards that are not set up specifically for defensive players.  If you want defensive players to get more recognition then you will need to make two seperate MVP awards.  Defensive MVP and Offensive MVP.  How many times has a defensive player been named the MVP of the SB?  I can only think of once.  Larry Brown for his two INT's that Neil Odonell basically handed off to him.  Other than that I cannot remember any.  I probably only remember that useless dude because it was against the Steelers.

and Weatherford was huge.
I think he was the Giants biggest free agent acquisition last offseason.  The difference between him punting and Matt Dodge punting is incredible.  With Matt Dodge I think the Giants wind up losing a few more games because of field position and returns allowed by his 2 second hang time punts and don't even make the playoffs.

He did NOT! This ^ can only be explained by concentrated Eli worship. I don't think anyone who doesn't want to live in Eli's jock as having that game described by Eli bailing out the defense. In fact, the Giants D bailed Eli out so much in that game, his boat was floating 15' above the water.
