Is Flacco similar to Eli?

February 8, 2012 1:07 pm

According to Ravens offenisve coordinator, they are.

Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron sees connections that can be drawn between the Ravens' Joe Flacco and the Giants' Eli Manning. “I think there are a lot of parallels when you look at where they both were after four years,” Cameron told the team's website. “They both have had a reasonable amount of success. We all know the success Joe has had, we all know Joe’s upside. I think people were saying the same thing about Eli.”

When you look at the #s:

Eli: Comp%:54.7/TDs:77/Ints:64/yards per attempt:6.3/yards per completition:11.5/passer rating:73.4/W-L record:30-25
Flacco: Comp%:60.8/TDs:80/Ints:46/yards per attempt:7.1/yards per completition:11.6/passer rating:86/W-L record:44-20

A reminder that this is comparing the first 4 years in the league. Eli led Giants won a Super Bowl in his 4th season. Are they similar?

They are similar but Eli wasn't very good in his first 4 seasons.  I doubt Flacco will turn into the qb that Eli has plus Eli is the most clutch qb in the NFL and I can't see Flacco ever becoming that.

No because Flacco always had a top 5 defense surrounding him while Eli had a top 5 defense once in his career. Plus Eli won a superbowl in his 4th year (3rd as a full time starter) and Flacco is 0-2 in AFC championship games. Now I think Flacco and Ben are more similar though in regards to the teams concept.

Up until this year, they are similar in stats and inconsistency from game to game regardless of the defense they are facing. The big difference is "clutch". Eli has it, Joe does not.

Compare the stats, Ben's career numbers are better than Eli's or Flaccos, whose numbers very much resemble each other.

I think Joe Flacco is a better QB.  You put Flacco on that Giants team and they would likely have 4 SB's in a row.  He has the strongest arm in the league now that Jon Kitna has retired.

What about Peyton Manning and his laser rocket arm?

Good point, giants7924.  Peyton Manning does have a laser rocket arm but he will have to get used to the teams in the NFC since he will likely end up on an NFC team.  The NFC is better when it comes to QB's and winning SB's.

Because...arm strength = greatness???

Why didn't Jeff George and Dieter Brock dominate the league, then?

You are kidding yourself right? No mean to disrespect Eli or anything, but his #s resemble Mark Sanchez when you take a gander at them. 73 passer rating, 55 comp%, yards per attempt and completition in the 11 and 6 area.

I'm so tired of hearing this defense bullcrap. Name me a defense who kept the Pats under 20 points in 2007?

For the first 3-4 years of their careers you are correct.  The big difference is that Sanchez will probably never succeed in New York like Eli has.  Sanchez seems like he has a very fragile psyche and the NY media will destroy any chance he has at success while Eli just doesn't care and lets nothing bother him.

Lol. I wasn't talking about stats. I was talking about both ben and Flacco's success due to the strengths of thier top 5 defenses.  I know Ben has better stats than Flacco u clown. But the team concept for both the Steelers and Ravens have been run the ball and don't make mistakes because of their great defense. I'm not knocking Big Ben at all so simmer down their chief with your man-crush on Ben. If it makes you sleep better at night I actually think Ben is a top 6 QB in the league while Flacco is not top 10.  Ben has just been fortunate to have a consistent defense year in and out and the difference between Ben and flacco is that I've seen Ben come thru in the clutch while I rarely see Flacco do it even though surprisingly he did it against u guys down there in pitt.

It's not a terrible comparison.   The problem is that Flacco must now do some heavy lifting and win some hardware.  Eli wasnt very consistant back than, but he had a knack for making some big plays in big moments even back than.  And his aw shux demeanor which drove fans crazy is now a source of calm.  I'd say Eli fits in with Ben at around 4 or 5ish at this point.  Not better than Brees, Brady, Rodgers or Peyton but now clearly ahead of Rivers and Romo.

I would probably stick Flacco in the 12-15 area at this point.  Hell, if Lee Evans holds onto that ball maybe Flacco is a top 10 guy.

The stats might be comparable but Flacco doesn't seem to have the mental toughness Eli has.
