UConn proposes own penalties to boost 2013 tour...

February 8, 2012 2:34 pm

If the NCAA had any common sense, their answer would be "go f**k yourself." But since it doesn't, it will probably let UConn punish themselves.

UConn proposes own penalties to boost 2013 tour...

The penalties for failing to meet standards should absolutely be enforced. UConn already got away with major recruiting violations that should have led to a postseason ban last year. The fact that they still added Andre Drummond when they were out of scholarships was bad enough (even if he is now paying his own way after first taking a teammate's scholarship). If Jim Calhoun doesn't care about his STUDENT athletes performing in the classroom, they shouldn't be allowed to perform on the court, especially not in the NCAA tournament. If they could, what point would the APR make?

If UConn is allowed to get away with this sort of crap yet again, I will probably stop watching college sports altogether until the NCAA is disolved.

AGREED!  This whole "we think we are going to be really good next year, so we don't want anything to stop us from going far in the tournament" line of thinking is crap. I don't care what school it is. That is like a kid that was caught stealing from 7-11 telling his parents, "I have Joey's birthday party Friday night. Can I start my punishment next week?". Total BS.

IF all the 'academic' standards are adhered to...UCon(n) is going to look more like Duke! lol You know....w/ a bunch of Jalen Rose's labeled Uncle Toms. AND more white boys. Period. I can't wait to see which NBA 'playa' is chosen to help Coach Jimmy w/ the inner-city edukashunal sessions. PS All you Coach Calipari haters and Coach Calhooligan sycophants...need to now shut the hell up when it comes to 'clean' programs. NCAA...hold your ground!!! lol

since they WANT to 'punish' themselves to avoid missing post seasons it proves that missing the post season is the only way to get their attention.  The idea that these corrupt institutions should police and punish themselves is comical.

Has there ever been a criminal who wouldn't prefer to decide what his sentence should be? But the NCAA has long been looking the other way while UConn brazenly bought players, so it wouldn't be surprising if Cheater-in-Chief Calhoun is allowed to slap his own wrist.

I'm just SO sick of the many cheaters in NCAA sports! I'm even more sick of these cheaters trying to manage their own punishment! Furthermore, I'm becoming unsympathetic towards any student that goes to these types of schools anymore. The rest of the world now has a pretty good idea of many of these programs that seem pretty shady... the students and their parents even get to meet these coaches (or should I say used car dealers) and get a first hand look. If you want to take the risk and go there in order to get the ring then don't start crying when you have to pay the consequences for a programs notorious past. It will be a new day in the NCAA when the message gets sent loud and clear to the students, "It's not worth the risk of playing for crooked coaches or athletic programs!"

great point!

we always here the sob stories about punishing the current players for pasts teams transgressions. It is such BS. No one forces these players to go to schools like UCONN. In fact, I would say many of them go to places like UCONN specifically because of the way they conduct themselves. EVERYONE knows the reputation of Calhoun. Yet the university keeps him and the players chose to go there or stay there.

This isn't about cheating, this is about the NCAA raising academic standards and penalties at the same time. In addition, they intend to punish Connecticut for academic statistics that were gathered before the rule was in place. It would be like if they lowered the speed limit to 45 mph and they sent you a ticket because you drove 46 mph when the speed limit was 55. There are academic policies in place and according to the NCAA graduation rates have increased since the policies have been in. So they are working. There is no reason to raise standards and punishments. Next thing you know, half of the NCAA teams will be ineligible and we'll see Northwestern play Vanderbilt in the NCAA Championship in basketball.

UConn proposes own penalties to save 2013 NCAA ...

February 8, 2012 7:07 pm

The part I can't comprehend is the NCAA needing or wanting to rely on gathered data that is up to three years old to determine eligibility for a tournament.  In this scenario, it's not inconceivable that nobody will be on the roster that is responsible for the team being prevented from playing in a tournament.

None of us will argue against raising standards for the student-athletes.  But let's have some intelligence behind who plays and who doesn't.  If you haven't worked in direct contact with a division I athletic program, it's an eye-opener.  The fact that any of these "students" have lower than a "C" average in anything is astonishing -- they have to be true idiots or the laziest people on earth.  Most programs provide one-on-one tutoring because of class time missed during the season.  They have mandatory study halls before or after practices to make sure time is available to the kids and they stay eligible.  Student-athletes also get first choice of classes in most schools so it matches up with practice schedules and known travel times.

And for that matter, why can't they determine tournament eligibility using data on the students who are actually about to play in the tournament?  For example, with basketball the fall semester ends sometime around the middle of December and kids are either eligible to continue playing into the spring/winter semester or they can now join in because they got their grades up.  Here's a novel idea...if the overall team GPA isn't 2.0 or better, you're out of the next tournament.  Game over.

Hmm. Basketball staff checking the HW of dunces and freshmen? Yeah, I can smell a scam a mile away. Hire someone to correct, er 'check', their homework. Right. 1 of 'a' doesn't always equal 1 of 'b'. I think the NCAA should still throw the banhammer to show it's serious.

Here's a thought UConn..

Instead of "punishing yourself" how about you go back and help the kids who you screwed out of an education your were contractually obligated to provide them.

I wonder if former players could sue?  Wouldn't that be something!!!!
