Duke, + question on no zone D

February 12, 2012 5:07 pm

I think Loyola beat Iona last night so that is how bad we were early without a PG.
So 81 what are you inferring?  After all, when I told you that there was NO EXCUSE for the magnitude of loss (by 26 points) to Iona, you went on and on about how good Iona is.  So, is Iona a high quality ball club?  Even without a PG are you still excusing our 26 point blow out to them?

And then Loyola goes out and lays an egg (68-51!) on their homecourt against Fairfield yesterday!  Just goes to show how teams that aren't used to winning have a hard time embracing success and building on it; obviously, the Greyhounds couldn't get their focus back after their big win over Iona on Fri. night.

Iona is a very good club with two exceptional players in Glover & Machado, but there's still no reason why the Terps should have taken such a beating from them.  Early on in the season, the Terps displayed a tendency to simply quit when things started to go south quickly; I didn't see the Iona game, but it smells like that's what happened.

81 -- If the Terps find a way to beat BC this week, my early season prediction of 5 conference wins comes to fruition.  Unfortunately, I don't see many more Ws left on the schedule after that.  Good news is that Faust stepped up in Howard's absence; hopefully, he continues to grow/improve and produce for the remainder of the season.  We'll need that from him if we're going to stay competitive.

skeeters -- I was pleased to see that the refs called an even game in Cameron on Sat.  My argument definitely had a few holes shot in it, didn't it?!?  Unfortunately, rebounding and a lack of turnovers by Duke doomed us anyway.

I guess Terps fans on these boards have deemed the season officially over now that PeShon is done.  I can't remember the last time these threads were this quiet before/during/after a Duke game...and on a weekend no less.

I still see maybe two more wins on the board and even one in the ACC tourney, but that all has to start with beating BC on Thursday. If they lose that game then they might not win another the rest of the year. BC is really not that bad of a team or maybe every team they play just thinks their going to suck and said team ends up losing. Ga Tech is doable on the road and I'm thinking Maryland will beat UVA at home on senior night.  Maryland could win those  games including BC or lose them all. The score of the Duke game looked like a rout but Maryland was still in the game with 8 min left. So I really don't know what to take from that?

Mac,

For me it's been a case of what else is there to say. This year has always been that they have limited upside, with significant issue's...meaning that this entire year is about development for next year. I just don't want to keep commenting on the same weaknesses after every game.

The Duke game showed nothing different to comment on. I expect that they will be competitive in the first half of every game going forward, but will not survive against the top half of the league. I was beginning to believe that they might be able to get a key win, but the loss of Howard removed that thought for me.

They have exceeded my hopes for the season and am extremely positive about next year and the program's future going forward.

I would say the only story that would get me posting regularly is the topic that I've mentioned before...Stoglin's relationship with Coach T. I thought the issue may be settling down, as Stoglin seemed to be playing Coach T's style better as of late, but the benching during the Duke game reminds me that this issue may be heating up to a boiling point

I hear you, Mouly.  It does sort of become like beating a dead horse.

I think my frustration last week with the result of the UNC/Duke game came less from what actually happened during the game and more from our program being stuck where it is right now.  Ten years removed from a national title and the thought of another one seems as irrational as it did the day Gary took over the program so many years ago.  Easier to rant about perceived injustices elsewhere than to direct the blame where it truly lies, I guess.  After getting a taste of reaching the pinnacle, I want so badly for the Terps to get back to where the Duke and UNC programs are year in and year out.  Sometimes it's hard to fathom how far our program has fallen (illogically, IMO) since 2002.

The distant future does look bright but that doesn't prevent me from hoping that we steal a victory every single time out this season.  The Stoglin/Coach Turg storyline is definitely one to keep watching; I'm sure Turgeon wasn't too pleased with Stoglin's postgame tweets.  I just hope their differences don't result in Stoglin transferring at the end of the season...one step forward, two steps back.

It's no secret that the Maryland hoops threads on this site have always been some of the busiest in the ACC.  Regardless of our varying opinions and disagreements, I've always appreciated the passion/interest from the posters here.  Just hoping the activity stays that way during this rebuilding process, because my wife and daughter could care less Wink!!
