Red Wings win 18th straight at home

February 9, 2012 12:23 pm

I don't think it'll happen, though. I think the Wings beat the Ducks and lose to the Flyers to snap the win streak at 19. Call it a hunch more than anything, but I'm thinking the Flyers will come in to Detroit with a good effort just to snap the streak before the Wings tie the record.
That's a nice hunch, but the Flyers recent play doesn't encourage that notion at all.  They've been sloppy not only on the blueline, but also from the forwards in their own zone.  Detroit is playing well right now, and the Flyers are still playing with crucial pieces missing and Briere just returned and the chemistry that he had with the line just isn't back yet.

"That's a nice hunch, but the Flyers recent play doesn't encourage that notion at all." They may not seem like the most qualified candidate but if the Red Wings are still streaking when the Flyers arrive; Detroit better play like its Game 7 of the Finals. Regardless of how a team is playing currently, it is still a professional team. There is no team unable to beat any other on a given night. That night, the Flyers would be playing for history and their right to keep it. Just as 20 in a row in 2012 is more difficult than in 1976 when the Flyers did it. The '76 Flyers streak was much more impressive than one from '29-30. It'll be 60 minutes to keep a franchise's record and I bet they will be plenty aware and plenty ready.

20 in a row in 2012 is more difficult than in 1976 when the Flyers did it.

I don't understand this. Why do you feel it's harder now? Using 1976 rules, the Red Wings' streak ended at 12. Game 13 was a shootout victory. In 1976, that's a tie. Goodbye winning streak. I have to assume you mean there's more competition (in the form of more teams) now, making it tougher, but I think the fact that every game now will have a winner, something that was never the case before, trumps that.

I don't like comparing teams or players from different eras, actually I hate it in any sport, even bass fishing and bowling.    One one hand the 76' team had the benefit of no free agency and the ability to retain the team and they had the good fortune to play some of the worst teams in NHL history in their streak.   On the other hand the Wings get the benefit of a shootout or a victory in 5 minutes in 4 on 4 play.

Both streaks are equally impressive respective to their era.

The streak didn't help them win a cup.    Philly was swept in their 3rd playoff series.   The voices tell me something similar is going to happen to Detroit.

I don't understand the logic behind those statements. That said, regardless of what era we're talking about, 20 wins in a row is damn impressive. Though the shootout may be helping Detroit some now, it still sure isn't easy. The NHL has used the shootout for almost 7 full seasons now, yet I don't think we have these conversations very often.

I really don't know how it compares the the Bruins and Flyers streaks. Some have made good points one way or the other, but in the end, I'm just looking at what the Red Wings are doing right now and it is nothing short of awesome.

As awesome as it may be, though, I'm with hockeybob.......I'm ready for it to end. lol

If you haven't followed the conversation, you probably missed that the Flyers don't exclusively hold this record, as the Bruins are tied with it.  And Red Wings beating the Flyers wouldn't break the record, but put themselves into a 3-way tie.  They would need to beat the Stars as well to have it to themselves.

If Red Wings do set the record, I really don't think it should be breaking the all-time record.  It should be consider a record under the modern/current rules and not an all-time records.  The old record was set when there were ties.  If no one scored in the 5 minute overtime it was considered a tie and would stop the winning streak.  I know that that streak would have ended in their last game when the Red Wings had to go to a shootout to beat the Ducks.  With the old rules, that game would have ended in a tie and would have stopped the Wings winning streak.
