Duke. That's what I'm talking' about.

February 9, 2012 6:40 am

Duke beating UNC last night was one of the reasons we all continue to share in the love of the college game.  Hey, I was actually pulling for the Tarheels.  Marshall is probably my favorite player.  I've never cared much for Duke and that ego- but get ready for that ego to grow a few sizes more for all the right reasons.  North Carolina stopped playing around 2 minutes prior to the buzzer going off.  That's a problem.  On the part of North Carolina it showed an elitist attitude that has bitten them in the butt more than a few times this season.  They surely underestimated UNLV and it didn't take long to see that the Runnin' Rebels were ready to take advantage.  The Tarheels completely lost their minds when they were pummelled by Florida State- not just beaten at the last second- they were destroyed from the tip-off on.  While I can understand how and why they think they should be invincible, history can't have escaped them that this is Duke.  To those who insist that this North Carolina team is going to be in the Final Four, I think it's fair to state that I wouldn't doubt them losing in the first or second round in the tournament.  Their short memory looks like a major chink in their armor.  Too bad, because this team is way talented.

Austin Rivers woke up yesterday morning and did all the right things apparently, and it was a no-brainer for coach K to call his number when it counted. On the other side of the ball, why, why, why put Tyler Zeller out on the perimeter?  Did the coaches forget that Tyler isn't athletic?  Sure, he's great around the basket and he runs up and down the court like a maniac, but he's not ever going to be any match for a quick guard-especially after he made that bizarre tip-in for the other team.  As "experienced" as is Zeller, he's still a kid, and he was no match for the relative baby Rivers, who knew he was going to hit the shot the moment he stepped out on the court before the play-especially when he saw he was facing Zeller-especially when Zeller didn't get out on him and respect the 3.  Coach K seemed to know it too.

This UNC team reminds me so much of the KU team from 2010.  They had a plethora of talent including Sherron Collins, Cole Aldrich, the Morris twins, Xaivier Henry, Reed, and Morningstar.  However, they walked around with the same cocky attitude and got pummelled a few times during the season including the UT and Okie State game.  There were another handful of games they barely squeezed out.  Then we all know what happened in the 2nd round against flipping NIU.  UNC is capable of winning the national title as much as they are capable of losing in the second round with their elitist attitude that you touched upon.  I think Roy will fix that issue and they will still end up hoisting the Wooden Trophy when it is all said and done.  However, they are lightyears away based on what I have seen up to this juncture.

BTW unolobo, your UNM team is playing lights out.  Hopefully they make the tournament.

On another note, how much faith do you have in Bob Davie?  In my view, he is another Steve Lavin: a mediocre coach who will flame out over time.

In Chef Ramsay's words:

UNC is lazy, they put in no effort, and they deserve a good kick up the arse right now.

If they do not wake up by Sunday, they could see UVA smack them too.  IMO, UVA is a better team than Duke at this moment.  I refuse to take a team seriously when they lose to Miami and FSU at home.

In the end, UNC was defeated in the mind game where coach K excels, but they were also beaten in the fundamentals.  I honestly believe that North Carolina players- certainly their fans- looked at the rebounding advantage, the hustle inside and the fact that Marshall seemed to be doing what he wanted early.  The trouble is that if everyone was paying closer attention, they would have noticed that Marshall had 7 assists at the 15 minute mark of the 2nd half and had only one more the rest of the game.  They could have also recognized that this was a career night for little Austin.  They definitely forgot that 3's count for more than 2's as they took only 6 shots from behind the arc and allowed Duke to hit 14.  UNC had only 6 players score while 8 from Duke put up at least 3 points.

What a great game like always from these two teams!  Honestly Duke could have packed it in by being so down and almost out but Rivers and the 3s bail em out and all I have to say is AWESOME!!

You know I was thinking the exact same thing about the team you mentioned.  The Jayhawks had so much ability and really underperformed when it counted.

yep.  I'm a homer from way, way back, but I have been as impressed with this New Mexico team as any I've seen.  While I understand the teams' weaknesses, I believe they have a realistic chance to run the tables from here on out.  Yes, that means winning at San Diego State and beating UNLV next week.  All I want is for New Mexico to get invited to the Dance. They're real close.  Then the bane they've faced...winning a game in the tourney.

On another note, how much faith do you have in Bob Davie?  In my view, he is another Steve Lavin: a mediocre coach who will flame out over time.

Well, I like Davie's resume.  He certainly can't do worse than what Locksley did.  (2-26 !)  In addition to his respectable record with the Irish, I am most hopeful that he can bring what he did to Texas A&M during some very nice Aggie teams.  There's no doubt he's a step up from what the poor New Mexico fans and players have dealt with lately.

oh yeah, forgot to mention that I don't think North Carolina underestimated Kentucky, they just weren't as good.  Especially losing Strickland, North Carolina doesn't have quite the athletic talent or depth of Kentucky- they don't need to feel bad, though...neither does anybody else.

Duke U. will be a fun campus today and this weekend.  I think the Austin Rivers' doubters need to just be silent for awhile and appreciate that kid's heart and focus.

I will always think he is too cocky and very arrogant.  Doesn't mean I don't think he is an excellent player...just think he is too stuck up for my liking.

It is tough to say, but congrats to Duke for playing the game until the final horn. Certainly something UNC didn't do. Just adds another crazy chapter to the rivalry. As good as Zeller was in the first half, he blew that game multiple times in the final minute. Missed free throws, tip in for Duke, and his poor defensive stance on Rivers.

Zeller's tip in was classic. I couldn't stop laughing. The GASP of the crowd, the shocked cheerleader's, and the look on Huckleberry Hound's face that he had just been flumoxed....oh, wait, that's his normal look.

Fabulous  game; fabulous shot to end it; what's not to like.  IMO, NC did everything but win the game.  Duke could not play inside, so the 3 point shots did the deal.  Everything is just great until those shots don't go in.  Wonder what percentage of that last shot goes in; regardless of who is doing the shooting.  Seems to me that, at the momement, Duke has NC's number.

This was really an ugly game.  But most rivalry games are.  UNC gave this game to Duke. It was a good game to watch as usual, but these refs need to be held accoutable for missed calls.  The last time I looked, 4 steps is a walk.  Granted, UNC could have still won this game even with that bad call, but these calls are happening everyday in college hoops. A charge is when the defender sets his feet before the Offensive player takes one foot off of the court.  I'm not trying to take away anything from this big game between DUKE/UNC, but these refs need to be held accountable in every college game.

This was an awesome game. The refs called it pretty well. And no you don't have to be absolutely stationary to draw a charge. If a guy runs over you it's called a "player control foul" or a "charge" because he's outta control. The refs had nothing to do with the outcome. Duke won the game outright. If Rivers misses the shot at the end would all the turdhole fans be crying about calls? I don't think so. Your bias is showing.
