Another Beautiful Day For Blue Devil Nation

February 9, 2012 6:01 pm

I'm not one that often claims the refs cost a team a win.  In fact this is probably the 3rd time I've ever said it and I'm in my mid 30's.  UNC's missed FT's definately played a huge part.  Had they not missed them, they win.  I'm not denying that.  But It's funny how there is clear evidence of 4 terrible calls and no one on here can even say they see the calls or that they remotely effected the game.
As for the total foul count, duke should've had more fouls.  They shot 40 frickin 3's and primarily shot outside while UNC took it inside the entire game.  Inside= more contact.

Calls or lack of calls had absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of this game. The end of the half the shot clock violation put Duke down one instead of three and Coach K made his case and simply wnet to the locker room. Why isn't that lack of call been presented by anyone? I'll tell you why. Because it's in Ewenc's favor. Grow a set and think about how foolish you look whining about officials. You LOST. Duke WON. Grab a fake teat or pacifier and suckit.

Douggie I went back and looked at that play at the half and I agree that was a bad call by the refs for us. I wish they would have looked at that and took those points of the board because I hate to see refs get calls wrong either way. The whole foul arguement was close but the thing is we shoot more free throws then any team in the country if i'm not mistaken because we attack the basket and as Bilas has said many times Roy Williams plays to the foul line. One of our goals is to get teams in foul trouble by pounding the ball down low and getting free throws. I think we usually make more free throws then what the other team attempts to put things into perspective.

I'm not mad about the fouls that were called because those usually can go either way but the blatant missed calls piss me off.  The Curry 3 step without dribbling three and the air ball three that Henson didn't touch but Duke got the ball back and hit a three were just terrible. I'm sure if it was the other way around you guys would agree I know all my Duke friends I watched the game with couldn't believe the refs missed those calls but they were happy and I can't blame them.  It is what it is but bottom line we blew the game and Rivers was the best player on the floor and hit the big shot. We will see you guys in March where hopefully the ACC season championship is on the line.

I think Carolina's lack of depth really hurt them down the stretch when foul trouble and fatigue started coming into play with their big guns.  Duke definitely doesn't have as much high end talent, but in my opinion they have a little bit more quality depth than Carolina (in fairness, Carolina has suffered 2 fairly significant injuries this year which has hurt their depth).  I think they have similarities to Duke in that they are often very unbalanced in their offensive production (just the reverse of Duke in that Carolina's frontcourt provides most of their scoring punch).  I also think Carolina can be slapped with the mentally soft/lazy tag (especially guarding the perimeter) that Duke has rightfully been saddled with this year.  I think the one major difference is that expectations were sky high this year for Carolina, so in that regard, their fans must be a bit more disappointed with how the season has unfolded so far than the Duke faithful.  Good news for both teams is that there is still about a month left to improve and work on some of their deficiencies.

Grogan is a phuckin**** crybaby and typical carolina fan. Bottom line is all that "superb" talent  just ain't all that. Every basketball fan knows that carolina is over-hyped every year regardless. And yes, Duke is given too much credit at times also.  Harrison Barnes couldn't tie Austin Rivers' shoe.

Besides the best player on both teams was Rivers and he if anyone deserved to win.

And that's what K told the ref's the entire second half as the duke players spread out and had conversations with the refs.  Apparently they listened at the end

Really? The referees have to call the game in real time and don't get the luxury of watching replays after replays to decide whether or not a finger did or didn't touch the ball and you are whiniing about it? The refs had to make a call and called it how they saw it, in the Dean Dome, where Duke is favored for nothing but being hassled all night long. If you want to bring up the 3 step travel by Curry, the ref standing clearly in front of him was watching him and not his feet. Even then, the 2 plays before that with a forearm shove on one of the Duke players that went for a no call and a Carolina basket. So calls were missed all around, it's part of the game and the officials aren't perfect.

I know Roy Williams didn't come out and say, "Man, the refs cost us that game. They didn't call the airball out and our ball and Duke nailed a 3 that took the wind out of our sails and oh man, that 3 step no call on curry, man they wanted Duke to win from the start." He gave credit where credit was due. Give me a fuggin break and stop hating.

Whiners and crybabies abound when they lose don't they? Bottom line is a FRESHMAN named Rivers busted Duke's biggest rival in their gym! A Senior All American didn't make his free throws and instead of grabbing a rebound with two hands he tips it in for Duke! You either make plays to win or you make plays to lose. Duke made the plays to win and the Whiners made the plays to lose.

Here are some interesting stats on Duke.

1)Duke started 20-4 in 2002, 2004, 2008, and also in 2009.
2)The Vegas line was 6 and Duke beat the spread by 7. That makes the 9th time this season Duke has beaten the spread.
3)Since 2006 Duke has won 22 games by 5 points or less.
4)Duke has played 48 Top 25 teams the last 5 seasons and their record is 31-17.

The selectivity of some of the Carolina fans is really getting absurd.

Let's face facts. Carolina is not performing up to expectations.  Some of that is due to 2 serious season-ending injuries, but just as much is due to a weak mental will on the court and as much as I hate to say it, on the sidelines.  The ordaining of Carolina as the runaway choice to cut down the nets is nothing new; we've seen this before with a number of stacked teams.  Until you actually do it on the court, it means nothing.  Either they're not as good as advertised or not as tough, it's that simple, even with the injuries that they have suffered.

Bad/missed calls happen all the time and throughout an entire game.  Did Curry walk on his 3 late in the game? - sure did, but there were also bad/missed calls against Henson, Zeller, Marshall, Barnes, etc. at different points of the game...same for Rivers, MP2, Dawkins, Kelly, etc.  A "juggernaut" like Carolina should definitely be good enough to overcome those types of calls while playing on their home court against an "outmatched" opponent, even if that opponent is a pretty talented team that happens to be their archrival.

Also, some of the Carolina fans are rationalizing the defeat by saying that they let off the gas/didn't go for the kill in the last 5 minutes.  I'll remind everybody that a college game is 40 minutes in length.  Did Duke let off the gas in the last 5-6 minutes of the first half and the same amount of time to start the second half?  I know that I saw some very solid Carolina play during that stretch, but I also saw a bunch of unforced turnovers by Duke as well.

As I said, you can be very selective about this stuff if you want to prop up your crutch as to why "your team" lost a game, but in the end, you do yourself and the tea you root for a disservice by doing that.

Ummmm.... No. That game was poorly officiated ALL AROUND. Too many fouls on both teams... But for you to say UNC got the majority of them is just wrong
Ummmmm.....yes,,,the term "majority", especially in this sense, means something greater than half...so for a game that had 25 fouls against for Duke and 22 against for Carolina, the numbers are clear and contrary to your colsusions.
