Three Point Line

February 14, 2012 12:14 pm

I agree you have to defend the three point line better then we do but I'm talking about the NCAA as a whole. I think the three point line needs to be moved back to help prevent teams from shooting threes alll game and getting hot and winning games they shouldn't. I just would rather see an all around game of basketball being played rather then a team jacking threes all game because that is the easiest and most effective way for them to win. If a team has to shoot a ton of threes there chance of winning should be slim because the three point shot should be harder to make. Now days with the way some guys can shoot threes the advantage is to shoot a bunch of them and just hope you make them.

And shooters are shooters...backing up the line a few feet won't matter.  Wide open vs contested....that's the story.

I disagree with you on backing up the three point line wont matter. It will make a big difference maybe not for the great shooters but for the guys that have trouble shooting from three now will have big problems if it's moved back. Look at Strickland this year and his jumper from a step inside the three point line he was pretty good. When he moves back behind the three point line he has been terrible for his carrer so the distance makes a big difference. Sometimes in games what kills you is a guy who normally don't shoot well from three actually makes some and helps the guys that do shoot good from three. If you back the three point line up the guys who have a tough time shooting the three now will be far worse and I think you would see less teams relying on the three to win.

Like I said...shooters are shooters.  Strickland isn't a shooter.  Duke is loaded with shooters...backing it up wouldn't affect them at all. I really don't think it would make that big of an impact.  Just my opinion though.

Three Point Line

I broke out my dads old collection of games from the 70s and 80s before the three point line was invited...and it was beautiful.  The art of running and gunning, fine passes, it was just an awesome era of basketball.  He had the collection of teams ranging from syracuse, state, Duke and UNC.  It is just something we never see anymore.  That is why I love the way UNC plays.  The running and gunning.  I HATE seeing teams like Duke 80 shots and 70 of them are three pointers...it just ruins the game of basketball.

I was saying this exact same thing in a post after the d00k game and a d00kie knee jerk reaction jerk poster replied that what i said was the stupidest post he had ever seen. I agree with YOU, Bulls. Jacking up 3's every time you cross mid-court is pussy**** basketball. It sucks. It's cheap and I think it has destroyed the integrity and honor of the game. Is it exciting when your team nails a 3-ball? Yes of course it is. But over all, when a sub par, less talented team has to rely on 36 3 point attempts to even stay in the same building during a game, it's just too much. screw d00k. I will HATE them FOREVER! FOREVER! FOREVER!

let's be clear here, not every team shoots the 3 like Duke.  That's how their offense operates.

Instead of complaining about it, learn to defend it.  IMO.

Tyson...guessing you are a Duke fan...but I agree.  The fact is that UNC has won games with 3's over the years.  But since it's not our strength and we got beat by a team who lived and died by it we want it backed up.  My thoughts are these:  we need our shooters to knock down good looks and we need to defend the 3 point line much better.

Basketball has changed, no more peach baskets or underhand free throws.  It's above the rim and beyond the arc.  Lets not complain about the integrity of the game.  If a team wants to shoot 30 3's a game...so be it.  Granted, I don't want UNC to be that team.

Can't wait for the rematch in Durham.....Coach K...please jack up another 30.  Just pray that you're hot again.

Tyson this has nothing to do with one or two players shooting threes. In fact I think you need a great three point shooter probably two on every team to be most effective and I wish we had some this year.  It also has little to do with Duke and UNC for that matter because usually we are evenly matched. What I hate is a team that can't play with another team but they beat them by jacking three balls all game just hoping they get lucky and make a bunch. So basically I am talking about the VCU's and Davidsons that beat teams they have no business beating by jacking threes. Now this year Duke jacked threes to beat us and I thought it was a joke but usually I don't think Duke would take 35 threes to beat someone.

So while people want to keep bringing up the Duke game and say we should guard the three better that has nothing to do with this topic. Yes Duke beat us by shooting a ton of threes yes we need to guard it better but Duke is a good team not some team that will barely make the tournament then upset someone by hitting 20 threes. The point of this thread is the simple question do you like watching a team shoot 35 threes and win or would you rather see the team that plays an all around game have a better chance to win? I think in my opinion that if a team shoots 30 or more threes they should lose about every time because that shot should be so hard to make. So maybe if the three point line was moved back we wouldn't have to see so many three point shootout games because the shot would be harder to make. It might not work but in my opinion it would make the overall game in college better. Go Heels !!!!

Also let me say this alot of the threes Duke was hitting were NBA threes so that was some impressive shooting.

Okay I understand where you're coming from. I don't agree but i understand, fact is those VCU's and Davidson's would never win if the 3 pointer didn't exist. The team with all the Recruits (The UNC's) would always win.. Like the days of John Wooden's UCLA teams.. What fun would that be? To me, that's not how the game was intended to be played. . This game is beutiful because you don't have to be a superior athlete to win at it. Everybody has a chance, I guess it just depends on how you see the game.. My favorite NBA player  of all time is John Stockton. John Stockton was not the fastest nor did he jump the highest but John Stockton still holds the record for most assists and steals in the NBA because he had heart. I love the fact that a regular guy can win at the game of basketball but that's just me. Good Post.
Don't get me wrong Tyson, there is nothing wrong with the three point line.  I grew up in the generation of the three point line, but when I break out those old tapes that my dad has gah I could watch them all day long.  The running and gunning it was awesome.  I just wish teams would become more run and gun instead of rely on a 3 point line every game.  It is an art that is lost.

And it is not Duke's fault at all.  It is no ones fault but the NCAA for putting it there.

Tyson your right John Stockton was the man. I could watch John play basketball all day long and probably never get bored. He had such basketball knowledge and knew how to make everyone on his team better. I don't think we will ever see a player like John again he was the master of the point guard position. I have found myself watching a lot of Jeremy Lin right now because he makes his teammates so much better but doesn't have the great gifts that others have.

The whole three point line debate is just a opinion of how you like to see the games played really. I guess it does bring excitement to the game when one of these unknown teams beat the power teams but I would still rather see the big time schools play. Nothing gets me more pumped up then playing Duke or Kentucky especially when there is a lot riding on the game. If UNC and Duke ever meet in the NCAA Tournament I might have a heart attack from being so pumped up for a game like that. Anyway good debate and we may not agree on to many things but we will always agree John Stockton was the man. I hate the fact that he never won a NBA Title because he definitely deserved one. Go Heels !!

Three Point Line and The Clock

February 16, 2012 2:12 am

It's not the 3 point line.  It's a player leaving the man he's guarding to think he can get help get a rebound or trying to get a double team.  Then the man who gets the rebound or making the double team... then comes the pass with an open man behind the 3 point line and an open shot.

The passed ball always travels faster than the dribble.  A player has to Stay with His man no matter how he thinks he can help.  Hands up.  Z's fault and a lucky shot being a freshman with the clock down to one second.  Z did not lose the dook game.  This time someone needed to some over and help trap him.  Then the Heels would have won.  That's one of the few times you leave your man.

It is what it is.  Don't leave a good three point shooter outside the line no matter how you think you can help.  The balls passed and the shot is up faster quicker than you can get back.  The exception is with 2 seconds left in the game and helping Z, Hands up!

The other defensive mandate.  It is what it is and during tonights game against showed against Miami.  Tonight we ran the clock.  Roy learned his lesson from the dook game, again.

Clemson has never won in the Dean Dome.  It's our next home game keeping the streak going.  I want Kendall to take 4 set shots in every game.  No matter it he missed or not, it keeps the defense honest.

And Kendall make half of them.

If it wasn't for the 3pt line, Dook would win about as often as their football team does. Well, the 3pt line and the officials
