The QB Dilemma

February 15, 2012 7:15 pm

The bottom line with tannenhill is that he will not be able to contribute immediately.  He needs seasoning.  Now it seems as if the tools are there for him to have a chance to be successful, but we need someone to step in and play now.

I wouldn't mind drafting Tannenhill(not with a 6th though), as long as he is deemed qb for the future, a backup for now.  And we get via fa or trade the qb to play for at least the next 2 years, or more if they do well.

Again I wouldn't reach for ryan at the 6th.  That should be any of these if one of them is available( Man I hope one of them is):

RG III, Matt Kahlil, Justin Blackmon, Morris Claibourne

or trade down and get a tannenhill or one of the top 3 WR's like FLoyd or Wright, or a stud OL along with an extra pick somewhere .

The QB Dilemma

Going after Manning makes sense because we don't have to give up a pick to get him. Sure, he won't perform, but at least adding him won't mess up our rebuliding efforts. Adding a QB with the #6 pick or trading a bunch of first rounders would be a disaster because we don't have an OL or any offensive playmakers that don't play TE.

The defense is looking promising. We've had some hits in the draft(which is good because this team would be terrible if Orakpo and Kerrigan busted). I agree that we need secondary help even if we aren't awful. This team needs to focus on adding another lineman or two (getting a top FA and drafting someone with a top pick makes sense) and then starting to work on WRs(FA may make sense). If all goes well, next year we'll be in a position where we can draft a QB and give him enough talent to have a prayer.

The QB Dilemma

I am ok bringing in a FA QB however Manning is not the guy I want. He is on the down side of his carrer and we have tried this in the past and it has failed every time. I know Manning is in the very top of QB's in the NFL I just think he would not be a good fit in DC with Shanny.

I agree with the rest of your post it is spot on.

Okay, I gotta ask this, but how does adding a broken down old QB NOT mess up our rebuilding efforts? Especially when you even said he won't perform. Why in the world would we want to spend money on a player that won't be able to perform? That just doesn't make any sense.

We need to forget about the older QB's and either go for a young guy like Flynn or do whatever it takes to get RGIII. I'm tired of the Redskins going the old broken down QB route.

Yes, if Manning shows he is 100% healthy and he can make all of the throws, than I wouldn't mind them spending a little money on a 2 year contract for him. But only if we can't get RGIII in the draft.

If Manning isn't 100% healthy, then do NOT sign him and hope he gets healthy. Because if they did that, they might decide to forgo going after RGIII and lets just take a rookie in the 3rd round and hope he develops because we have Manning and he never misses games. Well what the hell happens if he takes a hard hit and is done? That was the mistake the Colts made. They should have started drafting QB's 5 years ago and worst case, you trade them when they're good enough to get picks for them. Or save them in case Manning was done. Now they're going to have to start over with a rookie QB. So much for making the playoffs.

So please, lets stop all of the old QB talk. Lets stay focused on getting a young QB in here who can grow with this young team.

The QB Dilemma

Going after Manning would imply we're ready to compete for a SuperBowl and we're only a QB away. This is simply not the case. This franchise is a long way off from a playoff berth, much less being the type of team Manning would be willing to go to. Why would he come to DC? To join the neverending list of failures? DC is a career killer for someone his age.

The QB Dilemma

I don't think it matters which QB we sign. I just think that as long as we sign one good enough to ensure that we don't draft a QB, we're ok. Manning or Rex or someone else on a short-term contract it doesn't matter. Just like signing McNabb didn't help.

The thing about signing Manning is that if the Skins sign him, then the Skins won't draft a QB with their first rounder. And that means they won't draft a QB in the first round or do something like try to trade future year first rounders to move up to get RGII or Luck which would really cripple the franchise.

The thing about drafting a QB is that our offensive line is horrible, our running backs are terrible and our wide receivers suck. The idea that Gaffney and Helu can be top playmakers is absurd. The only position where we have playmakers is at TE. And don't forget that Cooley wasn't healthy last year and Davis and Williams have shown they can't be trusted. If you draft a QB with our first round pick and can't find a way to add at least five or six good offensive players this year, then the guy you draft will fail. You simply can't draft a QB, give him no weapons and no time and expect his confidence not to be shot by the end of the year. Our QBs play scared because they get killed and they can't trust their guys to make plays. And honestly, I don't blame them.

If this team is going to rebuild, it needs to work on the offensive line. It needs to work on adding a few WRs that can actually make plays and has talent. It needs to add enough offensive talent so that a young QB actually has a prayer at success. In a year or two when they get that, then they can add a young QB via the draft. There's always going to be another highly hyped QB who will be expected to be a franchise saving player.

What happens if Manning gets hit? You lose twelve games that year but you've added some talent for the next few years because you drafted guys who play different positions. What happens when you have a QB with potential who has absolutely no playmakers? You also lose twelve games and you've squandered a high pick.

i am ok with getting Manning here, i just dont see Manning wanting to play his brother twice and putting his family through that drama.

Dawg, I agree with some of what you said, but hey our RB's aren't all that bad.  I actually think they may be one of the better trios in the league.  They put up some good stats last year and ran pretty well I thought.  Actually one of the few areas that I think we will not be looking to improve this offseason.
