Consider yourself warned: The old Tiger is coming

Tiger gets a whole article. The man leading the tourney gets a paragraph. Sad. Tiger will not break 70 tomorrow.

What am I missing? The Tiger is 6 shots back tied for 17th. Unless he shoots lights out on Saturday, he'll be an afterthought on Sunday.

Wow, what a disappointing article.  I fear Mister Elling is being forced to write this pablum.  The astute eye, however, will find Mister Elling's wit making it through the CBS writ: I suggest everyone read the first sentence over and over until you get it.

I doubt the guys at that top find anything about Woods cringe-worthy, other than the details of his secret life.  Gary Player recently said Rory is the most-talented golfer he has ever seen.  Player saw Nicklaus hit a ball or two, rumor has it.

Robert Rock also weighed in.  Robert Rock, you know, the guy who defeated Woods two weeks ago.  After playing the first two rounds at Dubai with Rory, he pronounced Young McIlroy the best driver of the ball he has ever seen.  "Rory was just fabulous today. I feel lucky to have been up close to watch it. He makes the game look simple."

Today's suggested spin must be "Woods shot the worst score he possibly could have."  Elling wrote it, the GC said it, and the post-round interviewer even put those words into Woods' mouth.  The point is that while Tiger Woods didn't make very many putts, every other player made 50-foot bombs on every green.  Poor ole Tiger should be leading; he was just unlucky.

This has been a great tourney so far.  The only thing missing is Phil Mickelson, who evidently missed the cut.

Well, it makes for interesting copy but it has no meaning. Will Tiger win again? Probably but the absolutely certain result will not be what you might expect. He will never be what he was before he became the corrupt sex-fiend womanizer. Now we have to go through the facade that none of that mattered. It was all done by the "old tiger" when he was somebody else. BS ! The sycophants might gather but his day is done. He cannot go home again. The hero worshipers can keep up the delusion, after all they are just sheep following the so-caslled leader. He is and will always be a philandered and should spend his time somewhere else.

Believe it or not, like it or not, Tiger Woods is STILL the biggest story in Golf. He may get back to the old Tiger he may not, but the media wants and needs the world to think that for the ratings. Personally, I think he will get back to the old Tiger, it just may not get him the wins he got because of the players of today. No one golfer will keep him from winning on consistent basis, but with the field so talented now, it will always be somebody having the game of their life that keep him from dominating..like the Rock guy or whatever his name was in Dubai.

The usual, predictable comments once again. Even when he does win, the haters will find some way to put a negative spin on it.

The old Tiger could putt. Striking the ball is easy when the pressure light in the first three rounds. Let's see what happens Sunday if he happens to be in the mix. The problem he faces now is what a lot of aging golfers go thru. Even Slammin Sammy made the switch to a belly putter. Keep an eye on Tigers' putting... that will determine if he can keep up with the leaders.

What's more amazing: That Tiger's game seems to be coming back, or that Elling actually wrote a positive article about TW? (well, actually it was the second in two days.) I vote for the latter, since I guess pretty much everyone figured that sooner or later Tiger would get his game back.

The only thing that will show that Tiger is back is to WIN. Second place is no good for him. Today he hit 33 putts. To put that in perspective if you hit every green in regulation and hit 33 putts you go three under. Nobody hits every green in regulation, 80 % is better than average on the pro tour which means you hit 14 or fifteen greens in regulation. With 33 putts the best you can shoot is even par or 1 over. That might keep you in contention at the US Open at Bethpage Black but it isn't good enough at Pebble Beach in an early season tourney. Just lookin at the numbers, he isn't close to winning yet.

The comments are predictable, alright: from the losers who want to see Tiger Woods fail. Elling is dead on here. Tiger is within distance going into "moving day." This is classic Tiger Woods. He may or may not win this time around, but the time is coming, very soon, when he will be fully "back." The US needs a dominant Tiger and the US Tour needs a dominant Tiger. Both are about to get what they need.

Teres, you people keep singing the same old refrain.  If, when, comming, someday, soon, back, may or may not, this time, next time.  The problem is that he keeps losing and you keep singing.

Steve has Tiger missing 4 of 27 fairways thus far, but the linked scorecard has him missing none. So, I go to PgaTour.com, which has him missing 4 of 26, not 27, fairways. Can we trust ANY of the people PAID to do (what is truly a SIMPLE job) correctly? Which is it? Frustrating. If Bill James is this sloppy, then no wonder 'money ball' has had mixed results of late.

"Tiger gets a whole article. The man leading the tourney gets a paragraph. Sad. Tiger will not break 70 tomorrow," writes AvengerGirl. 'SAD'? That would be a puppy in freeway traffic, a child with a kerchief covering her baldness, or a comeback by Vanilla Ice. Charlie Wi should count himself lucky if he gets a paragraph for his obituary on a major website, no offense intended.

dk13beso, Tiger may be 6 shots out of the lead, but he's only 3 out of 2nd place. If the leader were Luke Donald, even better a 32-year old Nicklaus, then such a lead might seem formidable with 36 holes to play. As it is, it's anything but that.

"WHO FREAKING CARES. There are other professional golfers more interesting than whats his name. Can I send Gregg hate mail for this stupid article?" avers and asks BamaHal. (1) You care, or you would have seen the headline and moved on. Gregg's hungry children thank you for your support, so by all means send those love letters to his editors. Feed that pig. (2) Name those who are under 70 years of age. I'll give you John Daly, but last I heard he and his bottle were in Qatar, or Doha, or Abu Dhabi, or maybe it was Timbuktu.

LannyH, setting to the side your--not, I'm certain, Steve's--rather juvenile attempt at wit, I also "saw Nicklaus hit a ball or two." John Daly, as well as Rory McIlroy, had more talent than Jack, as well. What of it? Personal discipline and strength of will both count for considerably more than what may be at most a small advantage in natural ability, as Gary Player himself has made his a lifelong hobby of pointing up. Gary, i've long suspected, never has never much liked Tiger. As to why, I'd not care to speculate, but it's a bit odd, given that the latter's example had a galvinizing effect on Tour players' physical fitness which Gary's decades of impassioned importuning and jocular digs never managed.
