Wi keeps lead at Pebble Beach; Tiger four shots...

Why is the headline about the guy in third place instead of the guy in 1st? This is exactly why the media has lost most credibility with the true fans of the game. How long will the media insist on making it about this one person? How long????

They will do it as long as you click on a story that has a big picture of Tiger and then comment on it

On this site it's more about Steve Elling and his obvious addiction (almost savant like) to all things Tiger (which makes you wonder if he's on Tiger's payroll) the actual tourny being meaningless tripe.

And why isn't there a story about Bill Murray making the cut again ... to defend "HIS" pro am win?

Its about the guy in third place because he has made golf what it is today. Not everyone hates Tiger like you. So possibly the best golfer ever starts making a comeback its news. Its good for the game.

Two words, Tiger Woods....that is why it is news.....he doesnt care what you all think, he cares about playing golf....What he did is in the past, get over it....move on.....if you dont like him, then dont read the article or comment....(ok everyone has the right to comment, I get that)....

Why?! Because Tiger Woods is bigger than Charlie Wi. Be friggin' realists would ya?! It's the same reason the headlines would say "Pujols hits 3 HRs" even if the Angels lose to the Mariners and, say, Dustin Ackley goes 5 for 5 with 7 RBIs. Tebow still got the headlines late in the year even during the Broncos season-ending three game losing streak. Not to mention I believe the headline starts out with "Wi keeps lead at Pebble Beach".

The media hasn't lost credibility by focusing on Tiger, it's you morons that think Tiger isn't carrying the sport on his shoulders. When Tiger isn't playing, half the golf fans tune out the remaining midgets.

Tiger Woods has now played 7 rounds of golf since winning his own tournament and after a 3rd place finish in Dubai he is showing a strong return to form where he still lcks consistency in his putting and short game but it all appears to be rounding into form. Any reasonable person can see that Tiger is healthy and ready to play some great golf in 2012 and winning is a possibility in every tournament he will be playing. Tiger is fortunate to play Pebble Beach in back to back rounds with the confidence of shooting a 67 in not the best of conditions. Charlie Wi may have shot a 61 earlier in the tournament but on a much more favorable course. This tournament has never been a favorite of mine as weather conditions change from day to day and many golfers hget the best conditions on certain courses and others get the bad days. The golfing at Monterrey Penisula today was a classic example as this course played the most difficult after playing fairly easy the prior two days. Now Tiber will be on even footing but chasing down two golfers giving up 2 and 4 shots respectivelhy. Everyone should hope for the clear weather that came in after the round ended and for a clear day with great greens to bring out the best in everyone. If anyone questions Tiger's intestinal fortitude all one has to do is look at the first two events he has played and it is obvious he is back.

The headline was edited well after this thread was started.  The orginal headline only spoke of Tiger and did not mention the leader at all.  What a surprise huh?  Surprised

truck, the problem is, people here are golf fans, and they would click and comment on articles about other golfers as well -- if they were given that option.

I think the only recourse may be to boycott advertisers.  Maybe have a National Don't Buy Golf Equipment Month.  A National Don't Play Golf Month.  Let the media decide if they want to target true golf fans or the "marginal" fans.

I want to add an important point.  I don't think people would care if the media hyperventilated over Woods if they didn't do it at the expense of the sport.  When I was a kid, the event always got the main article, e.g., "WI LEADS DUKE HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND," with a story about the leaders which would mention Woods was four strokes back.  Then, a side bar or smaller article would be, "Woods Hoping To Contend, Sits Four Back."

Instead, we get, basically, "WOODS LEADS FROM FOUR SHOTS BACK!!!"  If there is a sidebar story, it's along the lines of "What Will This Mean to Woods Going Forward."

I fear corporate boardrooms have more input into the articles being pumped out than any journalism teacher.

If CBS/Golf Channel want to play up Woods, why not at least mention that many Woods fans are gone for good.  We get propaganda about how "fans here are really supporting him" -- as if golf galleries don't cheer for the players they choose to follow?  Wouldn't it be nice to hear Nantz say, with his mellifluous voice, "We should mention to our viewers that while Woods still has many fans, he lost the vast majority of them with the revelation of his secret life.  The scandal completely repudiated the image Woods's management team had spent so much time building.  Those lost fans won't be back, so it's never going to be like it once was.  People who once cheered for him now cheer against him.  There is also a lot of mystery surrounding the secret visits of an unlicensed doctor -- now with a felony conviction for admiinstering illegal drug treatment -- treating Woods in his home."

Instead they treat Tiger as if he were a teenage American gymast competing against the old USSR: by golly, it would be unamerican not to cheer for him.

First class post Lanny. The trouble is there is no honesty in journalism any more. Maybe there never was?

Wow, reading through these comments shows there are two pretty distinct camps.  (1) True golf fans who love the sport, have followed it for years, and have frequently been playing most of their lives.  (2) Tiger Woods Only fans who never followed the sport until Woods made headlines, detest every other player, and have no interest in golf outside of Woods.  These are the ones that say "golf is boring without Woods," and "no one watches golf if Woods isn't playing," and "without Woods, golf would die" and "Tiger made golf," etc.  They have zero interest in learning about any other player.  When Woods is gone, they will no longer follow golf.

Now, why does the golf media cater to #2?  It's time those of us in #1 boycott the corporations who advertise on the one-sided telecasts.  That's the only thing that will result in change.  People talk about ratings, but what they really want are people watching who buy products from advertisers.  High ratings of people are nothing if they don't buy the products.  Let them market to an audience of people who think "golf is boring."
