New DB coach added will Woodson be kept?

February 12, 2012 10:09 am

By Steve Corkran

New Raiders head coach Dennis Allen has added Johnny Lynn and Mark Hutson to his coaching staff, according to Fox Sports.

Lynn will be an assistant defensive backs coach. Hutson will be an assistant tight ends coach. Allen has not hired anyone to be the primary coaches at either of those spots yet.
Rod Woodson and Kevin Ross coached the Raiders secondary last season. There hasn’t been any definitive word whether either will be asked back for another season.
Lynn was the New York Giants defensive coordinator in 2002-03. Most recently, he coached defensive backs for the 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles fired Lynn after the 2011 season after the Eagles’ highly touted secondary, which included former Raiders standout Nnamdi Asomugha, failed to play at a high level for most of the season.
Hutson spent the past five seasons as the offensive line coach at Tulane. He finished last season as the team’s co-offensive coordinator and interim head coach after Bob Toledo got fired.
Fox Sports said it’s possible that Allen also will hire Clayton Lopez to work with the secondary. Lopez spent the past three seasons as the St. Louis Rams secondary coach.

I remember when Rod Woddson was first hired and how I felt he would transform the young DB crew into a force. That didn't happen but I don't know how much of it is Woodson's fault. But he is not totally blameless either. That group as a unit failed miserably and the headliner is now looking for a job elsewhere. That can't bode well for Rod keeping his job.

This Lynn guy looks like the real deal and he actually has DC experience. I don't know much about this Lopez guy from the Rams but I have to believe Lynn will be the head of the DB's anyway even though they are calling him an assistant now.

As far as the new TE coach I don't have an opinion on that one way or another. Unless they are going to change drastically what they do at the TE position this hire will not make much of a differnce one way or another.
I like the new coaching staff and I have a feeling the penalties are going to be reduced drastically even though we are still talking about Oakland. Bring on the combine even though I probably won't watch it for the first time seeing as how our draft situation is pretty much nonexistent.  Hopefully some of these new coaches can bring some Free Agents with them because we need a bunch.

Hard to tell what Oakland has in mind for Woodson since they hired a DB's coach. i would have liked to see him return but if he doesn't then we move on with Lynnie. The DB's were horrible IMO but like you stated how much of that can Woodson be held accountable? Looks as if Woodson may be headed back to NFL Network 804. Go Raiders

I know stats are for losers and all that but Philly where Lynn just got fired from was a top ten team against the pass in the NFL and top two in the NFC. One thing I know is they don't lie when you're talking about the Raiders. Oakland's stats sucked on Defense and the DB's sucked. This is a classic example of how one teams trash is another teams treasure. If we would have been a top ten team against the pass the Raiders probably would have been hosting that wildcard game.

No doubt about it 804, there's no probably, we would've hosted the playoffs.  I like the hire, it's surprising he ranked top 10 verses the pass when their DC was putrid.  But the guy has been a DB coach for the Giants for a long time, and had a short stint as the DC, and he ranked top 2 or 3 in defense that year. The next year he was like 20 somethin' and afterwards he wasn't the DC anymore, dunno what happened after that.  But he looks like a real nice hire

I don't know what kind of dirt Juan Castillo has on Andy Reid but it has to be something big. Lynn was made a scapegoat for the Eagles but the numbers tell the real story. Philly may have been the only team that was a bigger disappointment than the Raiders last season but Reid had enough clout built up to weather the storm. Nobody really knew what was going to happen in Oakland but as the season went on hopes got higher and higher. Philly was expected to compete for a championship from the very beginning and their season was viewed as an epic failure. Castillo should never have survived that disaster.

As stated, stats don't tell the whole story...  The Philly defense reabounded to finish #10 in yards allowed and #8 in points.  It doesn't justify them hiring Castillo in the first place in my opinion, itwas as bad a hire as Chuck Bresnehan.  Unlike Chucky B though, it seems like Castillo somewhat figured things out.

Reid is loyal to a fault. Thats what the problem is in relation to Castillo. As far as what happens with Rod Woodson, I think that the Raiders are just trying to figure out where he is most valuable to them at. Willie Brown is another guy that I think they are just trying to figure out the position they want him at. Otherwise Woodson would have got a job elsewhere like Lal, Waufle and Fassel did.

Rod Woodson was the cornerbacks coach last season. He wasn't even the DB coach. KEvin Ross handled the safeties and Rod handled the CBs. I'm sure they both helped with both spots but that was his title. I would love Rod to come back at the same title and contiune being around the Raider org.

One thing I don't like about that article is they say it's his fault Nnamdi didn't play up to par...Thats bull. Just because Nnamdi had more than 20 catches on him doesn't mean he had a crap season. He didn't have a dominant season like he did with us previously but pretty dang solid.

It says he was DB coach of Philly, Baltimore, Bucs. Those teams have real good secondarys for years. Hope he can come in and get these guys playing at a high level.

Also after watching NFL films they had a segment on Cortland Finnagin, made me want the guy on our team. Jeff Fisher spoke glowingly of him. He seemed like a good guy but would do anything for his team and wants to be the best CB in the NFL. I think the Titans are going to move on from him and I hope Reggie throws some dough at him. The Rams and JEff Fisher are going to go after him hard I would assume after looking at their CBs corps is horrendous.

I remember the Eagles started the season slow but finished kind of strong. There is no way Oakland can just kick Willie Brown to the curb without some kind of announcement after being with the team for like 40 years. I don't think they feel the same kind of loyalty for Rod Woodson. He may or may not be back with the team. As far as Lynn is concerned I don't know how you get rid of a new coach when he had no offseason to implement his program. I guess the same could be said for Woodson. I'd like to see Rod brought back but it could go either way.

I really feel like Finnegan was born to be a Raider. He is not small but he plays a lot bigger than his size and can get inside the head of a receiver if he isn't ready. The thing is we need 2 corners now not just 1. That position is going to go a long way in determining the success of the team next season.

The thing that concerns me about Finnegan is how the Ref's would treat him if he was wearing Silver and Black knowing what his reputation is already. I like to think they don't have different rules for Oakland but some of the calls just don't pass the eye test for me. I just get the feeling they would have a itchy trigger finger if they saw Finnegan playing in Oakland.

Willie Brown retired last year and was just a "consultant" I think. So he was still on the staff just not as he regualr DB coach spot. If they don't allow him back I will lose it. That is one of my favorite Raiders all time and if they just kick him to the curb thats wrong.

Hopefully that Raider/Al Davis bias goes away. Finnagin has that Raider style. Him and Huffy would be a solid tandem as starters for us. IMO were going to have atleast 3 new CBs. I hope he doesn't S hit can DVD and Chekwa without giving them a chance to pan out.

I don't think Routt committed all the penalties they said he did even after Al died. He wasn't penalty free though. I just believe he didn't trust the backend of his defense which caused him to do a lot of holding when a receiver got a step on him. Put Routt on a defense with safeties who can help out with coverage and he will thrive.
