New Raiders head coach Dennis Allen has added Johnny Lynn and Mark Hutson to his coaching staff, according to Fox Sports.
Lynn will be an assistant defensive backs coach. Hutson will be an assistant tight ends coach. Allen has not hired anyone to be the primary coaches at either of those spots yet.
Rod Woodson and Kevin Ross coached the Raiders secondary last season. There hasn’t been any definitive word whether either will be asked back for another season.
Lynn was the New York Giants defensive coordinator in 2002-03. Most recently, he coached defensive backs for the 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles fired Lynn after the 2011 season after the Eagles’ highly touted secondary, which included former Raiders standout Nnamdi Asomugha, failed to play at a high level for most of the season.
Hutson spent the past five seasons as the offensive line coach at Tulane. He finished last season as the team’s co-offensive coordinator and interim head coach after Bob Toledo got fired.
Fox Sports said it’s possible that Allen also will hire Clayton Lopez to work with the secondary. Lopez spent the past three seasons as the St. Louis Rams secondary coach.
I remember when Rod Woddson was first hired and how I felt he would transform the young DB crew into a force. That didn't happen but I don't know how much of it is Woodson's fault. But he is not totally blameless either. That group as a unit failed miserably and the headliner is now looking for a job elsewhere. That can't bode well for Rod keeping his job.
This Lynn guy looks like the real deal and he actually has DC experience. I don't know much about this Lopez guy from the Rams but I have to believe Lynn will be the head of the DB's anyway even though they are calling him an assistant now.
As far as the new TE coach I don't have an opinion on that one way or another. Unless they are going to change drastically what they do at the TE position this hire will not make much of a differnce one way or another.
I like the new coaching staff and I have a feeling the penalties are going to be reduced drastically even though we are still talking about Oakland. Bring on the combine even though I probably won't watch it for the first time seeing as how our draft situation is pretty much nonexistent. Hopefully some of these new coaches can bring some Free Agents with them because we need a bunch.
