@VaHawk....I'm sure that people who've heard of Bobby Jones and know that he won USGA championships in eight consecutive years would never have thought winning one six years in a row was impossible. None of Jones championships were juniors either, which makes it even more impressive. This does not diminish what Woods has accomplished, but Woods' feats are not unprecidented.
@VaHawk....I'm sure that people who've heard of Bobby Jones and know that he won USGA championships in eight consecutive years would never have thought winning one six years in a row was impossible. There is a difference in winning an event is consecutive years and winning consecutive events. Winning USGA Championships is eight consecutive years is an impressive feat, but Jones did it in the 1920's. The amout of players entering those events was miniscule compared to the amount of players in the mix in the 1990's. Winning a USGA event in 1928 is no where near the accomplishment to winning a USGA event in the 1990's. There simply is NO comparison. In the early 1900's there would be as little as 20-30 entrants in the US Amatuer Championship, in 1999 there were almost 8,000 entries. In each of Tiger's SIX CONSECUTIVE USGA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS there were over 6,000 entries.
This does not diminish what Woods has accomplished, but Woods' feats are not unprecidented. You are incorrect sir. No player in the history of the game has ever won six consecutive USGA National Championships. No player, except Tiger, has ever won 18 consecutive USGA matches, not even Bobby Jones. Joones may have won AN event in eight consecutive years but he never won more than THREE USGA events consecutively. His Grand Slam consisted of TWO USGA events along with a British Amatuer and British Open. Tiger DOUBLED Jones best run of three stright. Tiger's SIX STRAIGHT is unprecedented and will likely never be duplicated. Each of Tiger's THREE straight US Junior National Championship came against deeper and more talented fields than Bobby Jones ever face in his career at any time. Jones beat a handful of players relative to the several thousand Tiger bested in each of his Junior National Titles. Again, winning SIX consecutive USGA National Championships is a mind blowing accomplishment than even the most ardent golf historian would have thought impossible before Tiger actually did it.
