Getting paired with Tiger gives Lefty jolt he n...

@VaHawk....I'm sure that people who've heard of Bobby Jones and know that he won USGA championships in eight consecutive years would never have thought winning one six years in a row was impossible.  None of Jones championships were juniors either, which makes it even more impressive.  This does not diminish what Woods has accomplished, but Woods' feats are not unprecidented.

When are sports writers going to view the whole field of golf players? Tiger Woods was good, once. Now they have many others that are players that don't think he is invincible. But still, everyone in the media focuses on Tiger. Is it because he is black or because of his past troubles? Either way I find it extraordinary the coverage of just him. Mickelson is a good golfer too, but does he not get attention due to the fact he's a good family man?

Dear Jazzy...

Poor Lonnie spent all morning composing those two paragraphs of Tiger love.  He did it to prove to the world that he knows more about golf than all of us.

How dare you point out the comical faults in both his logic and fact checking?

I feel that you owe Lonnie an apology.....

Don't you know he and Tiger and Freddie are good drinking buddies and he can shoot 3 under regularly while drinking 48 beer and driving home afterwards.

I know.  Sounds crazy, but honest......it's true.

This article demonstrates what is wrong with the American golf media.

We are told that Mickelson "blew away Tiger Woods and the rest of the field."  He did?  No.  He would have blown away Woods if it had been two-man matchplay.  He beat the 3rd round leader by two strokes.  Being as one stroke is the smallest possible margin, winning by two strokes does not really qualify as "blowing away," does it?

But it doesn't matter.  Because everyone knows the only story in golf if Tiger Woods, right?  If Woods gets blown away, well, by golly the entire field did, too.  There are two entrants in any tournament Woods enters.  Woods and the winner.  And often the winner is just a footnote.

What can golf fans do other than complain to sponsors?  Not much.  Just wait around for the next generation of golf journalists.

@VaHawk....I'm sure that people who've heard of Bobby Jones and know that he won USGA championships in eight consecutive years would never have thought winning one six years in a row was impossible.
There is a difference in winning an event is consecutive years and winning consecutive events.  Winning USGA Championships is eight consecutive years is an impressive feat, but Jones did it in the 1920's.  The amout of players entering those events was miniscule compared to the amount of players in the mix in the 1990's.  Winning a USGA event in 1928 is no where near the accomplishment to winning a USGA event in the 1990's.  There simply is NO comparison.  In the early 1900's there would be as little as 20-30 entrants in the US Amatuer Championship, in 1999 there were almost 8,000 entries.  In each of Tiger's SIX CONSECUTIVE USGA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS there were over 6,000 entries.

As good as Bobby Jones was, and was weak as his competition was, he NEVER won more than THREE consecutive USGA events.  The Grand Slam was a great accomplishment, but Tiger obviously equalled that feat againt exponentially deeper and more talented fields.
This does not diminish what Woods has accomplished, but Woods' feats are not unprecidented.
You are incorrect sir.  No player in the history of the game has ever won six consecutive USGA National Championships.  No player, except Tiger, has ever won 18 consecutive USGA matches, not even Bobby Jones.  Joones may have won AN event in eight consecutive years but he never won more than THREE USGA events consecutively.  His Grand Slam consisted of  TWO USGA events along with a British Amatuer and British Open.  Tiger DOUBLED Jones best run of three stright.  Tiger's SIX STRAIGHT is unprecedented and will likely never be duplicated.  Each of Tiger's THREE straight US Junior National Championship came against deeper and more talented fields than Bobby Jones ever face in his career at any time.  Jones beat a handful of players relative to the several thousand Tiger bested in each of his Junior National Titles.  Again, winning SIX consecutive USGA National Championships is a mind blowing accomplishment than even the most ardent golf historian would have thought impossible before Tiger actually did it.

Trying to compare Bobby Jones winning tourneys in the 1920's to Tiger's acomplishments 70+ years later is a joke.  I assure you that winning SIX straoght USGA Championships has never been accomplish before or since Tiger did it, and it will absolutely never be done again -  It's silly to try to downplay Tiger's otherworldy accomplishments in the game.  It exposes you as another weak minded hater that knows little about the game.

I get the feeling that Phil wouldn't have been too bothered if Wi had shot a 59 yesterday.  I'd  think yesterday was ultimate humiliation for Woods.  It could only have gotten worse if Phil had scooped up an dog turd on the end of his putter and offered to Woods to chew on.

To be beaten head to head by 11 strokes is degrading. For Phil to be the one to hand out this slaughter must have  cut the Punk to the quick.   Had this been boxing the trainer would have thrown the towel in.

The Lying Petulant Brat was handed his most humiliating defeat ever. And what do we hear from The Flat Ears Society? " Tigers back"

When you have possibly the greatest of all time, and certainly the best of his generation, and you are a competitor you will be inspired. And, so was Mickelson by Woods. Lefty will never be in Woods' class when Woods was in his prime ( noone was, Maybe Nicklaus ). Nicklaus did what he did over eons, whereas Woods catapulted, into and stayed in the Stratospheric heights only he could reach over a mere 12 to 15 years. He is only 36 folks. In this case though it was akin to when Lennox Lewis battered a shell of a Mike Tyson who was washed up, battered, and old, Lewis in his prime. This Tiger though is just battered a bit, yes, by life, but the bod has taken a bit of a beating too. This Tiger is still young , and unlike Tyson, this Tiger can still be leathal. We have seen flashes, and glimpses, he only has to put those flashes together.

It's really sad that we missed all of the fireworks written about in this article because we were stuck watching Illinois and Michigan fouling each other and shooting free throws, By the time the golf came on, the major excitement was done. Oh there were a few nice shots left, but the charge was completely missed! WTG CBS!!!!

VaHawk: While you are correct that Tiger won USGA championships in six consecutive years, it should be noted that the first three were JUNIOR championships, not be counted among the "big-boy" championships, so the real number is THREE, not SIX crowns in a row.  Counting junior titles is like counting a MLB player's Little League home runs in his lifetime stats!

Fabe - Noone, not even Tiger Woods, can match Byron Nelson winning 18 of 31 events in his prime. Greatest of our genration, I'll go with that though.

I think you are right Phil can never match Tiger in his prime but then again Tiger can't match Tiger when playing with Phil. In 10 times Tiger and Phil have played together on Sunday, the score is Tiger-4 Phil-4 Tie-2. In 30, total times playing together on the PGA tour the head-to-head record is Tiger -13 Phil 13 Tie-4.
The problem for Tiger now is this is the 2nd straight Sunday he has melted down this year. That is not a Tiger trait.

kinik: Kind of like the way your hero Elling criticizes those of us who cheer for Tiger? How do you expect Steve Elling to ever write anything objective about Phil Mickelson when Ellling was caught on CBS cameras hugging Amy Mickelson? What a clown. I'm not afraid to admit I'm partial to Tiger because I've enjoyed watching him for the past 10 years and want to see him continue to win. Tiger MADE golf a mainstream sport... I grew up in the late 80's when nerds and geeks played golf and jocks played football. Tiger changed that.
