Somehow, Lefty eclipses Tiger to take spot amon...

Just pure garbage, and wishful thinking. Jake Lamotta hung around and did a ton of work, and won championships, but he will never be in Sugar Ray Robinson's class. John Elway, and Jim Kelley will never be in Joe Montana's class. Just plain facts folks. It is possible but Lefty will need a torrid next 6,7, 8 or at least a very good 10 years of championships and slams to even compare. Its possible, highly improbable. No, let the wishful thinking die folks, Tiger is in a class by himself. The phenom made good on his talents, and streaked to 14 slams and numerous chamionships, and at a ridiculous,no, sick, age, when most kids are in college, and high school. Don't downgrade Tiger's career, and stupendous entertainment he graced us with just because of his off course lifestyle. All that has nothing to do with his accomplishments.

Let me put this into perspective, that is how great Tiger is, if you think Mickelson is great. Tiger has Three Career Grand slams ( That is all the Majors in the same year), Almost as many as Mickelson has single slam titles. To boot an almost impossible feat, in this modern tour schedule. You think Mickelson's 40 PGA Tour Titles is good ? Tiger has 71. Tiger is 5 years younger than Lefty.

Check your facts.  Tiger has 3 CAREER Grand Slams but he has NEVER won all four majors in the same PGA year.

Typical Elling. Supposed to be a Phil story, but Tiger's in the headline and mentioned twice before Phil's name comes up. On a side note, I think Tiger's holding all four Grand Slam titles at the same time is as good or better accomplishment than winning the fabled calendar grand slam.

Nobody is saying his career is as great as Tiger's. It's not, as Phil often says himself. Elling is just saying Phil is due some recognition as a great player. I don't think that can be questioned. To use the footbally analogy, Jim Kelly and John Elway are "great" QBs, in the HOF, although almost no one would say they are #1. But, it's still pretty good to be Jim Kelly and John Elway. And, it's pretty damn good to be Phil Mickelson.

I think the confusion is on "Calendar Slam" vs. "Career Slam". Tiger has ONE Calendar Slam. He has THREE Career Slams because he has won each major at least three times.

He has ZERO Grand Slams which is defined by winning all 4 majors in the same season.

Somehow, Lefty eclipses Tiger to take spot among the all-time greats

Translation(Tiger):

Somehow (Tiger), Lefty (Tiger) eclipses (Tiger) Tiger (Tiger) to (Tiger) take (Tiger) spot (Tiger) among (Tiger) all-time (Tiger) greats (Tiger).

This is Steve (Tiger) Elling (Tiger) reporting (Tiger.)

Guy writes a nice article about Lefty and half the morons here can only put him down and say "Tiger won more". Elling didn't say his 40 wins was better than Tiger's 71. No one else on the list of "40 wins" had to play against Tiger every week either like Phil did. Even Tiger didn't have to face Tiger through the bulk of his career.

the argument people isnt about who has a better career , obviously thats Tiger no argument. The fact and that is fact , no argument is that for the last 3 years and counting Tiger is not even in the same class as Phil golf wise

Tiger has ONE Calendar Slam

A Calendar Slam?

Would this be the Gregorian Calendar? Or perhaps the Thai Lunar Calendar?

Mayber we could change the dates of the Gregorian Calendar and back date them? Have New Year changed to the 4th May.

That way the Tiger Lovers can spin their lies with more accuracy.

And Phil continues to be the class person I remember when I met him in 1994 at La Costa and asked for his autograph. I recall that he without any problem paused his conversation to take the time to comply with my request and make small talk with my wife and I. Makes my day whenever he hoists a trophy in victory. Incidentally, he won that week as well. I have his autograph alongside Jack Nicklaus' autograph as they both won that week. I take no credit for their coincidental victories.

y2k. Tiger has won more but I do like that Phil is finally getting his props. For the longest time it was Phil's putter that choked away many opportunities. I was filled with chagrin, though, after Tiger busted that bunker shot for birdie and Phil answered with a "100" foot putt of his own for par to not make it a two shot swing. THAT was a classic. Tiger needs to relax and stop being like his "foes" that he would prowl all over 5 plus years ago. His mystique is gone forever. He needs to learn how to come from behind and win AND not shoot in the 70s on the final day. Just very unTigerlike. Phil has found his groove and it's not going anywhere any day soon. Enjoy Phil, folks, he's only got 4 or 5 good years left with maybe one or two wins post age 45. Big_Poppa...Tiger will continue to be the "headline" for the next 10 years. He's Tiger

Once again, the supposed "good" guy overtakes the supposed "bad" guy. Not even the case.... Phil had his chance to dominate the tour with Tiger being out for two and half years and he did nothing....I think he won 2, maybe 3 times in that span. Phil did not have personal problems, injuries, teacher change, caddy change and the drama that surrounded his nemisis...if he had half of Tigers problems for the last two years, Phil would have retired or fell off the map. Tiger will be back and continue to dominant the supposed "good" guy, who in real life is a complete D-Bag. I know he is, because I use to work at a club that Phil was a member at....and he is no good guy, at all!

Speeder - you list all the problems that have beset Tiger over the past few years. Except for injuries which no one can control, everything else is self inflicted. Caddy changes, swing coaches and PERSONAL PROBLEMS were all decisions that he made. Maybe you should rethink your post.

I have never played the golf game and never will, but I thoroughly enjoy watching. It is especially gratifying to see the Woods guy lose.
