If Percy is traded and to whom for what??

February 15, 2013 6:53 pm

Your points would be valid if receiving was all the team asked Harvin to do. It isn't. I ask again: what WR could have done what Percy has done given the totality of his situations?? Why is it that in Harvin's nine games he put up similar numbers as Larry Fitz did in 16??? Especially as a WR you are only able to do what you have the OPPORTUNITY to do. How can you even argue his worth when you and everyone else knows his numbers would explode with an adequate QB? That is his true worth. Why wouldn't you want someone that young and dynamic as a cornerstone on your team?

I don't think he will get traded. I hope he doesn't. I hope Ponder can get it together because Harvin isn't all about the money. Would you rather have a WR that only cares about the money, because that's the only type of WR we would get in free agency??

Other "fair" stats you may want to consider when comparing Marshall to Percy: targets and drops..... Those stats tell the true story...

February 15, 2013 7:46 pm

7168 total yards in 4 years in what 46 some games thats 156/yards a game with a rookie season in there. Does that number mean anything? He is not just a reciever he does much much more. Yes he may get injured but so can anyone he has participated in 54 of a possible 64 games

Sure if all you asked him to do and all he could do was catch balls he may not be worth 10 million but if the guy can sneak into the back field mess with the D alot and take it to the house at any point in time or take it from the back of the end zone and put you anywhere from the 30-50 yard line consistently you pay him 10 million.

Its not even Ponder for him its the play calling and lack of help on the outside for the whole offense. IMO the vets on are team see where this is going and can go so I believe they will restructure giving us the abiliy to bring in a wideout plus sign Harvin.

Stats all always great...but since we are into copy and paste we will do thsi lovely article from Jason LaConfora again because there are some great stats and reasons why stats don't paint the whole picture......

The Minnesota Vikings will not get fair value for do-everything receiver Percy Harvin, and they know it. They just might have to deal him anyway.

And if they do, he should end up being the highest paid of all wide receivers to change teams this offseason, and for good reason. If I were running a team, Harvin would leap to the top of my receiver wish list. I'll take Harvin at, say, $12.5 million a year over Mike Wallace at $11 million or Greg Jennings at $10 million, even if I have to give up a second-round pick and then some to get him.

Harvin has already displayed that he can be a difference maker on an offensively inept team, and heaven only knows what the dynamic and versatile threat could accomplish on a contending team that had a capable quarterback and a few other weapons around him in the passing game. It's a luxury that some lucky offensive coach (Andy Reid, anyone?) just might get to partake in come the 2013 season, given the bind in which Vikings general manager Rick Spielman find himself

As for other general managers, especially those sitting on mounds of cap space and in need of match-up nightmares on offense, well, Harvin must be seen as the best available. For all of the depth of this wide receiver class, Harvin is younger than Wes Welker, far more versatile that Wallace, no more fragile than Jennings and more consistent than Dwayne Bowe.

What's more, Harvin can help you win a football game on every down. He is one of the best return threats in the NFL and an elite slot receiver. Of course, you can also line him up out wide. And he proved to be a game-changer out of the backfield with the Vikings as well, the best back on the team not named Adrian Peterson. If you want to run some read-option/Wildcat stuff, well, he could quarterback that for you if need be. He is too fast to be covered by most, and his agility and improvisational skills make him a perfect fit for this pass-happy/spread formation era of football.

Harvin is just entering his prime and seems to have put his migraine problems behind him. This is someone who was a legitimate MVP candidate last season before getting hurt and someone who can match up among the best in the game at several different positions. And let's not pretend that these other receivers are a sure thing, as Jennings has been oft-injured and is nearing age 30, Bowe drops plenty of balls, Wallace wilted under the pressure of playing in a contract year in 2012 following his prolonged hold-out, and it's also worth noting that Wallace and Jennings have played with future Hall of Fame quarterbacks while Harvin has played, with, well, pretty much no one.

Also, I can't state this strongly enough: Harvin doesn't turn 25 until the end May. He's younger that Colin Kaepernick, for goodness sake, despite entering his fifth NFL season. And he can beat you in the screen game. He can beat you in the intermediate passing game. He can beat you in the deep game. And he can beat you carrying the football.

I understand the injury concerns. I understand some of the issues of attitude and clashing with coaches. But I have talked to enough of his teammates to understand some of Harvin's frustrations with the lack of a full-bodied offensive attack with the Vikings, and to a man his teammates say he is driven to win. He can be immature and he's made some mistakes, but no one this talented hits the trade market this young unless there have been a few bumps in the road.

I'd take my chances with him.

In terms of yards after the catch, his numbers last season were nearly identical to those of Darren Sproles, again, without being a part of an offense nearly as balanced as the New Orleans', and without Drew Brees getting him the football. All he's done is average a ridiculous 6.4 yards per carry in his career. He has five career return touchdowns. His average of 74 scrimmage yards per game -- from 2009 to 2012 -- puts him right with receivers like DeSean Jackson and Vincent Jackson, and among all players with at least 50 rushes and 100 receptions since 2009, Harvin's average of 10.3 scrimmage yards per touch is far and away tops in the NFL.

I'm having a hard time even coming up with a large list of individuals who approach at least 100 rushes and at least 250 receptions since 2009 -- numbers Harvin eclipses despite the time he has missed. Sproles has at least 250 catches and rushes since 2009, in 61 games, and averages 7.1 per touch with 26 touchdowns; Harvin has 10.3 per touch with 24 touchdowns in 54 games, and is a more explosive and complete receiver than Sproles, obviously.

Harvin's game can't be captured in stats, however. To watch him sneak out of tight spaces and create yards where there are none, and explode downfield despite everyone on the other side keying on him in the passing game, and despite playing on teams with no semblance of a downfield threat, is to be pulled from your seat.

The young man is a football player, plain and simple, and his best is yet to come. Unfortunately for Spielman and Vikings fans, that just might transpire elsewhere

At the end of the day Harvin is a weapon unlike no other in the league....when you have a player this talented and versatile you find ways to keep him as long as possible not trade him away.

IMO, Percy must be kept at all costs because of the aforementioned article !!!

He is too explosive, elusive, talented, driven to win, versatile and unique to be traded or cast aside. The Vikes will get a deep threat WR either in the draft or in free agency.

With our MVP RB, pro bowl TE, Percy, a deep treat WR and some tweeking here and there the Vikes will be a VERY dangerous team.

Lets hope Ponder steps up and produces as we expect him to.

How about trade him if we can for a 2nd rounder. With that pick get Tavon Austin with that pick. Same athleticism and cheaper, and I heard he doesn't have any attitude while he works hard. I think we need to cut Carlson too. Therefore we have Wright, Austin, bring back Simpson on a low contract, and I think draft Hopkins out of Clemson. I'd like them to think about Jenkins also. Bringing him back is a good character guy that at least can catch the ball.

If we do cut Carlson, how about drafting that TE from N.D. Eifert? He looks awesome and would fit nicely next to Rudolph. That tandem would remind me a lot of Gronk and Hernandez.

I still don't understand this part of the article that Hutch posted. He mentions Andy Reid as being the coach with a capable QB and a few other weapons to help Harvin? Andy Reid is the coach of the Chiefs right? Where is this capable quarterback and other weapons that he speaks of? Yea they have Bowe but he's probably going to take the first train out of there. Did I just read that wrong?

He is averaging 61 yards a game receiving, I wonder when the last time a receiver averaging 61 yards a game got a 10-12 million dollar a year contract. He hasn't even averaged 2 kick returns a game the last two years and giving a guy 10-12 million to return kicks is not a wise investment, we can't take the chance of him getting injured. I personally don't think he runs the ball enough to include that as a point to sign him to a big contract. So really he is going to get a contract as a receiver who can do other things, he is a player with a proven history of being a pain in the ass but he has the ability to be real special but hasn't really proved it in his four years in the league. Kind of a risky investment in my opinion, i'd rather move him try to get a late first or early second round pick, draft a couple receivers, and build the defense more.

I guess I dont get why everyone wants to give Percy so much money when most of you think Ponder sucks. Unless of course you all know we will be signing or drafting a strong armed quarterback next year who will be able to do get the ball down the field.

From what Spielman said on PA's show, Carlson is going nowhere. The team believes it was the injury that kept him from contributing and he is a big part of the Vikings offensive plans for next season.

Me personally, I think we totally overpaid him and that money could go towards a free agent WR, CB, or Percy if he really wants to be here

This is my biggest thing too.  Add in the return factor.  Jacoby Jones is on a 2 year $7 million deal and he is more effective as a return man. Drool all over Harvin's feet about his threat all you want, but Jones at this moment is a better return man.  Add in running back he plays 3% of the time.  He is worth, right now, $7-8 million a year.  Vikings are 12 million under the cap.  Maybe a few dudes are gone, but I am pretty sure they already subtract the guys that were 1 year left.  We don't have a lot of space to be spending 11-13 million on him.  I hope we offer him a new deal THIS year, and it being in the 7-8 range.  If he declines and holds out.  Ship his ass out and let someone else over pay for him.

I have not heard a dollar amount request has anyone else? but yea 12 mill would be way to much, I would go as high as 9 mill for him.
We would need some of OUR Vets to restructure because either way we have some moves to make in Free Agency.

We can discuss or guess what Harvin will or should get paid and what his true value is.....the real big issue is what he's worth to the Vikings and that may be less than what he is worth to another team. ignarentL said it best in what would another reciever have done on our team with our QB and  WR's and IMO it would have been alot less than what Harvin gave us. You pay for a players skill and how you plan on using him in your offence. Same goes for any deep threat you may want....We could bring  Jenning in but do you really think he'd be as successful as he was with Rogers and that Packer offence...Harvin may not be woth 10-12 million to the Vikings at this time but he is definitely worth it to few other teams who would use Harvin abilities to there fullest. The Vikings have to cdecide what there offensive game plan will be going forward and sadly, because of our QB situation that's a tough one to gage at this time. I really want the Vikings to resign him and hope they build a more explossive passing offence...if they plan on going with the status quo...which I disagree with.....one could understand if they don't resign him.......His value may be 7-8 million to the vikings and our current offence but it's also worth alot more 11-12 million easily to a team that has a QB and other weapons to maximise his talents.
