MrB, They are roster replacements for players from last year who are no longer with the team, but I don't know how you calculated the net 7 wins. If you compared them to our 3 worse players in terms of WAR; Pedro Beato, Chris Young and Bay, they are a net 3.9 games improvement. However if the names of R.A. Dickey, Scott Hairston and Jon Rauch are compared Marcum-Brown-Atchison are a net minus 4.3 games.

NY Mets nearing deal with veteran reliever Brandon Lyon, according to team sources

The Mets were confident that they were close to a deal with veteran reliever Brandon Lyon, even as a major league source said that Lyon was still negotiating with other teams.

Two team insiders said the Mets expected to sign Lyon, 33, a move that would likely round out their bullpen. In 67 appearances for Houston and Toronto last year, Lyon was 4-2 with a 3.12 ERA. He saved 26 games for Arizona in 2008.

If the deal is completed — and multiple sources said that it would be — Lyon would join veteran LaTroy Hawkins as new additions to a pen that includes Frank Francisco, Bobby Parnell and Josh Edgin. Other candidates include Jeurys Familia, Jenrry Mejia, and the recently signed Scott Atchison and Pedro Feliciano.

GM Sandy Alderson has had doubts this winter in Francisco’s ability to close games, indicating that Parnell and perhaps others will compete during spring training for the ninth-inning job.

“Coming out of last season, looking with what Frankie has been dealing with in the offseason as far as his elbow is concerned, I don’t know that we could have a lot of confidence in where we are,” Alderson said on SNY last week.
