Navy AD says Boise State "not worth it"

January 22, 2013 6:34 pm

According to the Bryan Murphy of the Idaho Statesman, the Navy AD has stated:

“What Boise State wanted was outrageous and unprecedented. It was not palatable to any of the other Big East institutions,” Gladchuk said. “In the final analysis, Boise wasn’t worth it. There is zero television interest in Boise along the Eastern seaboard. What it tells me is the Mountain West was desperate. Clearly, the Mountain West was willing to make whatever concessions necessary to keep Boise in the fold.”

Furthermore, quoting the article but not the Navy AD:

"The Mountain West agreed to sell Boise State's home football rights outside of the league's current television contract and agreed to pay national television [bonuses] and split bowl profits 50-50 between the participating team and the conference."

This IS NOT A BASH BOISE thread. I was surprised that the Navy AD would even bother to comment on this.

not sour grapes, just a very candid response to a question. Navy does not need Boise State, the Big East of the MWC. They can play as an Indy for at Navy football is not even in the top 10 most important things they do there. So I don't see them being upset about it.

Yep. Sour grapes and also trying to save a little face for choosing to move to a conference that is getting weaker by the day and on the verge of collapse.

I'd agree with Demo...football isn't exactly a priority for the service academies.  I learn much more towards it being a candid response about why Boise didn't keep its commitment to the Big East rather than some kind of animosity towards a program that doesn't hold a candle to the importance of the service academies to college football.

He's mad because losing Boise means the TV deal just got signifiacntly less valuable. Not only that, what he said was just plain wrong. The benefits Boise recieves, all the other schools can also recieve. They are performance based, for the most part. Yes, Boise will gain the most from that because Boise is the MWC feature team. Without Boise, either the MWC or BE lose valuable brand recognition. Boise alone makes the MWC the "best of the rest." That's why he said what he said. He's mad that Navy will no longer have the opportunity to benefit from Boises success.

It's the 21st century. The service academies hold no real relevence other than tradition.

You're right Bronco, more people are interested in seeing Boise State play Nevada than they are watching Navy play ND, Army or Air Force.  Good call.

No, but a a lot more people would rather see Boise play ND than Army play ND. Don't compare apples to oranges. Nobody wants to see Boise play Nevada... because Nevada ISNT ND. But I'm willing to bet a BSU vs ND game would garner alot more attention and TV viewers than Navy vs ND.

Goodness, geneh, you just won't get off off your anti-Boise bandwagon will you?

Frankly, the Navy AD sounded exactly like the guy that got turned down for the prom date.  He is mad that the cheerleader went for the cool star athlete instead of him.

We see the same here on these boards all the time.  For a meaningless nobody school, any Boise St. thread sure generates a lot of steam.  You'd think that if Boise was truly a nobody, that these threads would make their way to page 2, 3 and 4 quite rapidly.  But somehow they don't. At least we know that geneh is happy to join in on the debate.  That's a good thing.

And you guys act shocked that Boise would stand up for its best interests and do their best to pit one conference against another.  Why not?

I love it.  Boise acts like it is important, and they get a deal that demonstrates it, and poor geneh blows yet another gasket.  You'd think that by now, he'd be tired of heading down to the parts store for the 5th or 6th time this week.  Gaskets are a pain to replace, old pal.

Comparing any school to the service academies is apples to oranges.  They have totally different missions and fan types.

Each academy can boast millions of veterans who served in that particular branch of the military.  No school can claim that.  People tune into the Army/Navy game, for example, to see the tradition, the pageantry, and for patriotic reasons.  I love my country in a way totally different than my love for Boise St. or anyone else, for that matter.  It's right up there with my faith.  I respect and honor those who serve and defend our country far more than I will ever love and respect some football player. How one can even bring it up is ridiculous beyond words.

The academies can only recruit athletes willing to do a multi-year gig in the service.  Those who want to go pro usually don't even consider them as a rule.  Athletics is truly a side interest there.  Football is practically a religion elsewhere, a diversion at a service academy.

Lupo, I assume you knew I was being sarcastic, but I googled it and the result was that Boise-Nevada was a 3.9.

Whill, your Boise education is really showing there.  How does Air Force's conference affiliation have any correlation to whether or not Navy or the other service academies are more important than Boise to college football? It doesn't, sorry.

Smiles, no one is surprised that Boise stayed in the MWC, it was the right move for them.  The responses have been due to one of your fellow smurfettes trying to claim that Boise is somehow superior to the service academies - which it isn't.  As you pointed out, they have more important things than football at their schools and their players - for the most part - aren't there to go pro.   Blame your own kind for any negativity here.
