Golden opportunity to trade Revis NOW!

January 25, 2013 10:38 pm

So anybody that knows me, knows I believe the CB position is the single most overrated position in the NFL. The dropoff in talent from "the leagues best cb" to an average starting CB is like comparing the dropoff in talent between 2 kickers. My point is that there really is very very very little difference between the $16mil per yr "shutdown corner" and the "other corner" on the team so If I'm the Jets, I'm dangling this overpriced trade bait out there. You folks as Jets fans should be on board with this trade because it can bring you so much good.

Deion Sanders is THE ONLY big name CB to ever win a SB. Funny, youd think there'd be a lot more big named CB's with rings, but the fact is that champion defenses ALL have household names at LB and Safety, not at the CB position. Simply take the last 10 SB winners and think about their defensive players. I promise that you will be able to name almost all of the LB-safety tandems, but you will almost NEVER be able to name the starting CB's from SB winning teams.

Why?? Because CB's grow on trees and are a dime a dozen. They are only "elite" because some talking heads start a movement deeming someone elite. It happened in Oakland with an average cb named Asomugha. He just got a monster deal because NFL execs in Philly fell for the hype. And just like my theory (fact) points out, Asomugha has been outplayed both seasons by the other CB in Philly.

Don't take this as a shot at Revis. I'll buy the hype that he's the best in the league. My point is that the difference between Revis and Joe Schmo is so damn minimal that its laughable watching NFL GM's give starting QB money to these guys. Save yourself $15mil a season and go hire a practice squad CB. He might cost you 2-3 tds on the season, but at least hes only $3mil per season.

Golden opportunity to trade Revis NOW!

I agree that Revis is great and I'd love to have him, but while you need competent CBs, you don't NEED a shutdown corner.  If you have a good front seven that will pressure the QB into bad throws, you don't need a Revis, a Bailey, a Woodson, etc.  A CB with the quality of Revis is a great commodity and makes a good defense better, it's not the difference between a Super Bowl victory and a 1-15 season; really only a quarterback makes that much impact.  A great pass rusher or linebacker would be make much more of a difference.

Would I like to keep Revis?  Yes, of course, but considering he's going to walk next year because there's no way the Jets would be able to sign him for what he wants, it's the best option.  I'd say take a 1st rounder this year and a 2nd that could turn into a 1st depending on Revis' play next year.

Golden opportunity to trade Revis NOW!

CB is the most overrated position is bullshit****. This is a passing league. Revis takes away half the field and the top target week in week out. He is the highest rated player in the NFL over the past three years and has had the single highest rating after a season EVER for a player three years ago.

Opposing QB's 4th quater rating against Revis is 1.3 which is fuck****ing ridiculous. That is the biggest effect in the game people bar none.

He is so much better then the next guy at his position it isn't even funny. He may go down as the best CB ever!

Why do the Patriots want him so bad? If they get him reserve the Lombardi trophy for them for the next few years. They know what a difference maker he is. Just about every team will be in on him who has a legit shot at winning because he isthat good.

He will be more sought after then when Reggie White hit free agency. Why? He is that good and still in his prime for 5 more years.

Good luck with the Revis trade because the Jets will NEVER get equal value and this trade will go down as the worst deal in team history just like passing on Seau for Thomas, passing on Marino for O'Brien, passing on Sapp for Brady and passing on Ed Reed for Bryan Thomas.

Golden opportunity to trade Revis NOW!

January 26, 2013 2:19 pm

I am a big fan of Revis but unfortunately I think the Jets are backed into a corner where they almost have to trade him. I would like to see them trade him for a 3rd round pick this year and a first round pick next year (think thats the most they would get). The Jets are not going to win big anyway next year but this would set them up well for 2014. They would have both Sanchez and Revis's large contracts off the books, freed up salary cap to pursue quality free agents, and two #1 picks. I think they have to bite the bullet for 2013 and look to the future and trade Revis now while he's a hot commodity.

crazy joe,

Revis didn't keep the Jets from an 8-8 season last year, nor did he put the Jets in the playoffs in 2007 or 2008.  WITHOUT him this year, the Jets were 2nd in pass defense.  They can live without him.  There are teams with CBs that aren't even in the same league as Revis and still win.

It would be great to keep him but Tannenbaum screwed the team over with all he did with Sanchez's contract, as well as all the other overpaid underperforming cast-offs from other teams that he thought were going to magically become superstars with the Jets.  Revis should have been a lifelong Jet, but that's just not going to happen.

If not for recent injuries, Darrelle Revis could end up as the most dominant all around corner to ever play the game. And unlike Deion Sanders, who was the next best cover corner of all-time, Revis will also step up against the run.

Darrelle Revis is a special player because he basically takes away half the field. The way Antonio Cromartie played in his absence this past year, I'd love to see these two together but with a LEGIT NFL PASS RUSH. Revis is so good that he's been dominanting without the pass rush for his entire career. Unless some team is giving us a 1 and 2 this year or two 1's over the next two years, there is no way I trade away Darrelle Revis. Once Sanchez and Holmes are gone after 2013, you pay the man his due. He wants a Mario Williams deal of $16 million per year. I try to get him at $15 million per year.

Again, a 1 and 2 THIS YEAR or two number 1's, then I'd deal him because of the injury risk and chance of not resigning him. Anything less, I take my chances and I try to extend him asap. I would communicate with him now that when Sanchez and Holmes' contracts are gone, we'll do everything within reason to keep him with the Jets.

I would rather see the Jets trade ILB David Harris who I think is less of a loss than Revis or Cromartie would be. Harris is a nice player, but if he could get us a number 2 or a high 3, I think I'd free up that money; $8 million this coming season.

Stick Michael....just keep in mind that Cromartie had a great year because Revis was out. When Revis plays Cromartie gets abused. He was beaten more than any other CB in the NFL in 2011 on deep throws mostly because teams had to throw at him to avoid Revis. Last season, teams went away from Cromartie to abuse a back up. It all will float downhill no matter who is your #1. That makes Revis expendable in my opinion, because he will draw the most interest and garner the better draft picks. Cromartie is no Revis but teams will avoid him and go after whoever is weaker so the situational D will remain the same sans Revis. IMO, if your Jets can really get a 1st AND a 2nd or 3rd for Revis its a no brainer. You would get young, less expensive players and avoid a monster contract on the books in 2014 which helps the cap mess Tanenbaum created.

Be very careful about assuming that CBs are not that critical.  Look 300 miles north and differnce trading for Aqib Talib made for the Patriots. That allowed them sit Chung, start McCourty at free safet and Gregory at SS. Then they put Dennard opposite Talib and benched Arrington until they meeded a slot cover CB.

This is a passing league and a shut down corner takes the opposition's number one receiver away.

Corners are becoming G-O-L-D..........

e-love,
Thats the most astute statement I've seen posted. I mentioned Asomugha in my last post because there was this aura that followed him around. Teams wouldn't throw to his side of the field because they BELIEVED he was deadly, so they would pick on the other CB. When he got to Philly, NFC teams didn't buy the hype and threw at him all day. If you watched him play at all he honestly looks like a rookie every week. He's so bad!!!

This is a phenomina in the NFL. Guys get a reputation as being a mythical creature so nobody throws their way and POOF, they all of the sudden shut down half the field and collect amazing stats essentially for doing nothing! I'm not calling Revis a bum, he's actually very talented. My problem is with the value placed on the CB position. Why spend $15mil on that position when there are other guys a half-notch below Revis's talent for a third of the money.

What am I looking at? The Patriots were in the SB last yr and lost the AFC champ game this yr. Their pass defense is a mess and will remain so if they keep chasing after the CB myth. They won when they had a great LB/safety tandem which backs up my philosophy completely that safeties and LB's are much more important than CB's. Patriots need another Rodney Harrison, not another Asante Samuel.

Can anyone even name the 4 cornerbacks playing in the superbowl? I rest my case.

I wonder if Peyton Manning agrees with this statement? Hmmmm me thinks so on two counts. First, for letting Ravens WR catch that ridiculous bomb in final minutes of playoff game. Any 'good' CB would have never let that happen.  Second, the INT in OT that cost the Broncos a trip to AFC Championship game. Yea, I think he agrees with it.

A CB wasn't critical on either of those 2 plays. One play was a Saftey making a pee wee football mistake and the other was a bad pass by Manning.

The NFL is a passing league which is exactly why a shutdown CB is not needed.  I know people are like Biggie what the heck are you talking about?  With so many spread offenses right now unless you have 5 lock down guys their will always be another option to throw too.  The best thing to do right now is play 4-3 get a couple DE's who can get to the QB and hope he makes bad throws and you pick it.

That's exactly right Bigtime. Pressuring the QB I'd the way to stop a dynamic offense, not shutting down 1 option.

Trade Revis and draft a #2 and #4 in his place that NEVER make a difference. Trade a HOFer. Sink back to the bad days. 42 years and counting for a SB cause of ass decisions like this.

Well 2 things you don't know Joe. 1) Who they draft and how they will pan out. 2) If Revis, coming off a season with a major concussion and torn ACL, will be the same player.

Golden opportunity to trade Revis NOW!

January 28, 2013 8:46 pm

I agree with Bigtime.  Teams can still win even with their number one receiver shut down.  Another thing to consider is that the super-TE is becoming the rage:  Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez, Jason Witten, Tony Gonzalez, Vernon Davis, Antonio Gates, and Heath Miller to name a few.  A shutdown corner isn't going to shut down a guy who is as fast as a lot of receivers and bigger than a lot of linebackers; it's going to take hard hitting safeties and mobile linebackers to do that.  A Revis kind of corner is great, but as a compliment to an already great defense.  Like Biggie said, getting pressure on the QB is the key.  You can shut down the best receiver, or even the best two receivers all day long, but if you give the QB a day and a half to throw, he's going to find someone every time.  If the pass rush is good, however, you can get away with simply good, and not even great, corners because the QB is going to be on his back all day.

Look at Super Bowl XLII.  Corey Webster and Aaron Ross are good, but I wouldn't, and never would have, put them on my fantasy team.  But the Giants had Strahan, Tuck, Umenyiora, and Kiwanuka who barely let Brady stand up, plus Robbins and Cofield completely shut down the rushing game.  And yet, even with the most productive receiver in the league that year in Randy Moss, the Patriots only managed one passing touchdown in the whole game.  That game really showed a trend too; great QBs, like Brady, Manning, Rogers, etc, are only shut down when they can't throw.  Revis isn't going to do that.
