Can't Find the Love

January 27, 2013 2:06 pm

Generally, as a WVU homer... I fall in love with each year's team.  It took awhile last year, but with KJ... I loved what he brought to each game, and I developed my affair with them mid-season.  I was sad that he could not be surrounded by others who could help make them a complete team.

This year, I got nothing.

I watch every game... plan my day around it.  But, it doesn't even hurt when they lose.

Unless there is some huge change in the next few weeks, I won't have to worry about following them for long.

When I was a kid in the '70's, there were teams like this year's in relation to W's/L's.  But, I loved those teams because they fought hard every game.

This year, it doesn't seem like the kids are playing as hard as they could for 40 minutes.  They show glimpses of this kind of effort.  But, they don't sustain it for some reason.

It has been painful.

I have not been able to attend a home game yet this season, but have seen two on television.  My Dad, who has attended every home game, says the same thing.  They just don't seem to know how to play a full 40 minutes.  And yes, we sat thru some pretty bad, records wise, teams in the late 70's and early 80's, but Gale Catlett's teams alway fought to the last.  I agree with another poster, Huggins got let down by his scouts, miserably, and with his health issues, he had to rely on others.  He will get us back.

Same here, I don't even yell at the TV anymore.  It's been a long time since I didn't feel like they at least had a chance against anyone at home.  I keep hoping but I don't really feel they have a chance against anyone.....anywhere.

Can't Find the Love

Yeah, it is just one of those years.  I cannot get excited about the college basketball season because my team sucks.  I enjoy some of the games I watch on TV involving some of the top teams in the country, but it is a bummer to know my team isn't even in the discussion for the tournament this year.

I agree with bbwv and smitteedawg.  The good news is there is no chance of me having a heart attack during a WVU basketball game.  It was kind of the same way with the football team late in the year.  You know it's coming at some point during the game.  The opponent jacks up the defensive pressure.  This team runs offense for 30 seconds, then throws up a prayer and goes 7 or 8 minutes without scoring.  As bbwv said, there is no emotional connection with this team.  You want them to win, but you expect them to figure out a way to lose.

Can't Find the Love

I was right there with you too SMURPH during football season.  Once the team was blown out a second week in a row by KSU, I quit caring as deeply about them as I had earlier... like the Texas game.  That was so much fun for me and my family... because we were all screaming and celebrating with every play.

I went down for the OU game, but could not even feel the pain after watching another heartbreaker.  I simply wasn't surprised... even said to my family with me in the stadium... we left too much time on the clock when we took the late lead.

I fully expect to see WVU get blown out tonight.  But, I will watch anyways... and, I will celebrate a big upset if it happens.

I agree with SMURPH & BB about the football team. Although I HAD to stop watching because I was afraid I was going to have a heart attack with the way those games unfolded during the 5 game loser streak. They just gave up and didn't compete. I felt that if they didn't care enough to play - then I wasn't going to ruin my Saturday watching their pathetic display of ineptitude.

As for this basketball team, I do not understand them at all. I think it is to BB's statement that, sure - I have sat through some miserable seasons of WVU basketball (and football). But with those teams, they played their hearts out and left everything on the court (or field). You knew they were just being out muscled by superior teams - but they gave it their all. They fought. This squad gives you glimmers of the effort they could give - but then they go into a scoring slump or they stand around while a guard is TRYING to get the ball into scoring range. It's like they just don't care enough to break a sweat in order to win. They are saving their energy and their effort for something else. What that could be I have no idea. The NBA won't be calling on these guys.

It is disheartening, but it really hasn't upset or bothered me this year as much as it has in past seasons.
I guess that, much like the players - I really just don't care enough about this team to let it upset me.
Maybe next year we will get a squad on the floor that I can root for and get upset for when they lose.

It is now official... I hate this year's team. They are embarrassingly terrible. Hate is such a strong word...

Yes - I think today was the worst game yet.  We looked so awful in every possible area of the game and the fact that it was on CBS was mortifying - at least they had the good sense to cut it off. At this point BB, you are probably right.  Let the season just end and the announcements can be made about the transfers.  Time to just move on and forget this season ever happened.

In all my years from the Fieldhouse to the Colesium, I've never seen WVU play so bad, even the fight game against Pitt in the fieldhouse, our players fought hard.  Losing is one thing, quitting is another, these guys quit today.  Huggins will fix this mess, that I am sure of, we just gotta keep him healthy.

BobBob, I do remember that team, but I don't remember them ever quitting, they just weren't very good players.

Really? With young cat yes on the bench they were irreverent and hopeless. Never attempted to run offense or play defense. Shifting and hargetand Tyrone Sally were all pretty good players in terms of skill, no?

The only other year that I can remember having this little emotionally invested was the 2001-02 season, Jonathan Hargrett's one year in Morgantown.  Other than that, I can't remember caring this little about the outcome of any WVU sporting event.

REALLY,  while I was in school in the early 1980s, I remember some pretty good records,  Lester Rowe, Greg Jones, Russel Todd,  1980 15-14, 1981 23-10, 1982 27-4, 1983 23-8, 1984 20-12, hardly bad records.  REVISIONIST memory????????

I hear ya.  I've barely even stayed motivated to watch them anymore.  I am looking forward to Spring football more than anything at this point.  Does this basketball team make any post season?    I'd hope it will for the extra practice time.  Some of these kids just play really dumb basketball.  Quite possibly the dumbest at times that I've ever watched for WVU.  I know that's gotta eat Hugg's bad.

To expand on my previous post, yes, I also watched the unraveling of the program under Catlett and the play of one Jonathan Hargrett.  I think this team is different in it's "badness" in that it's multi fold.  That team, pretty clearly blame it on one egotistic player and one head coach who just couldn't handle it. This team, I think there are players who just don't care, and are just plain full out stupid and dumb.   What's the saying, you can't fix stupid?
