Free Agency

January 29, 2013 8:53 pm

There is a ton of draft talk going on but free agency will play a huge part in what we do in the draft.  Who are the players you would like to see the Chiefs go after?

I'm going to list players at positions that I think need upgraded.  I'm not saying to get all of these guys.

QB, I don't think there is anything out there at the moment to get excited about but if Alex Smith does get released we need to make it happen.

WR, Danny Amendola, Denario Alexander and Brian Hartline, Amendola is a first down machine, Alexander should have been a Chief you can find posts from me a Jayhawk fan calling for him in the draft even though he was hurt.  And you can't argue with 6 TD's in 9 games in his first NFL action.  Brian Hartline is just one of those sneeky good WR's.

G/C Kevin Boothe or Fernando Velasco, either one could play G and C at a high level

DE Mike DeVito, Ricky Jean-Francois

OLB Victor Butler, the guy is a beast he is stuck behind DeMarcus Ware and Anthony SpencerTamba Hali makes a ton of $ and is about to be 30.  And we have nothing behind him and Justin Houston that can put any heat on the QB.

ILB Brad Jones, Dannell Ellerbe and Larry Grant.  All three are stuck behind great players but when they have had a chance they have been amazing.  Ellerbe was arguably better then Ray Lewis this year.

DB Chris Houston and Tony Carter, Houston only allowed TD's in two games, Tony Carter played great for the Broncos and making them worse and us better sounds good to me

S Corey Lynch and Ed Reed.  Lynch would be an upgrade over Elam and is a special teams ace.  Reed is not as good as he was but he still does a great job thanks to his knowledge of the game and film study that is legendary, which would be a good influence on the Chiefs D.  It is tempting to say Jarius Byrd and give us the best S tandem in the league by a long shot but it would also be the highest paid safety tandem by a long shot Bryd is about to break the bank.

Go Chiefs!!!

Alex Smith > Matt Cassell but not by much.  Smith did go to the NFC Championship last year with the 9ers.  Matt could not have done that.

Alex Smith was very mediocre (and really still is) until Harbough came in and coached him up a bit.  Andy Reid has been referred to a good QB coach; could he coach up A. Smith like Harbough did?  At the end of the day the Chefs just really need a change at the QB position.

Unless they go and pull a Pioli, they're gonna get a guy that should, mostly likely, be better than what they got now.

Yep, and 2 years ago the Chefs killed the 49's. Alex Smith does not have a strong arm... = Cassel. Matt Cassel has had a new o-cord every YEAR and maybe the 3 worst head coaches you could come up with after NE. If KC trades for Smith do we get his cordinator, QB coach and Harbough? (maybe V Davis as a throw in) I laugh when I read that Alex Smith would have gotten KC 6-8 more wins or he "automatically"makes KC a top 10 Offense.

Not sticking up for Cassel, but everything that could go wrong did and it wasn't all his fault.  8 INTS were off of receivers. Some were not perfect throws, yet at least 5 (2 Bowe, 2 Dex, 1 Moeaki) were on the receivers. At least 3 of the fumbles were not his fault... things snowballed and Matt choked.

IMO, Alex Smith is NOT the answer. IF Dorsey can give up a 4th round pick and work the salary fine. Guys, Alex Smith isn't above average, so don't get all hyped if a trade is made.

I'm with you guys I don't think he is great.  But he is better then we have and I think the combo of him and Geno Smith would be a huge upgrade of talent to the position.  We need to move on from Cassel.  And I wouldn't give a thing for Alex Smith if he is a free agent great but I'm not prepared to give any picks up for the guy.  But I would like to see us double up on the QB position in some way.

Go Chiefs!!!

I like Amendola, but waste of time and money for as much as he is hurt. Personally you'll hear it a lot from me, I want Tavon Austin, instant game changer and electrifying player, helps out right away.

Ellerbe would be a wonderful signing, I'm not so sure Ravens' will let him get away!

Ed Reed would be awesome, just to have the best safety in football, but no way he comes here, he will play for a title contending team or back to Baltimore!

P.S. Anyone want a new kicker? Or is it just me?

I personally want Bart Scott after he gets cut from the Jets. He is a solid linebacker that would fit in for a season or 2 for a fill in spot till we figure out what to do about our ILB position.

Go Chiefs!

I think you can tell based on my post back in Jan. that I'm a happy Chiefs fan they actually tooks some guys I wanted (some of which I listed above)

QB - Alex Smith is by far the best pro QB to change teams this off season.  I was a little surprised by how much the niners were able to get out of us for Alex though.  I had assumed that with his salary that they would be forced to cut him and that if we were patient we could get him for no draft picks at all.  But my guess is that other QB hungry teams made that a no go.  Chase Daniels is a guy I brought up in another post that I'm also happy we picked up.  My belief is he is a player that will see a little action and will get "showcased" and flipped for a nice draft pick like Andy did so often while with the Eagles.

WR - Bowe is a very solid WR and I'm very glad to see him back with the upgrade in QB and coaching staff that knows how to run a offense I think his stats will only climb.  Donnie Avery had almost identical stats as Bowe last year.  He is a great fit for the west coast offense and just the player we needed to put Jonathan Baldwin on notice.  And an under the radar signing that I'm also excited about is Mardy Gilyard.  I think if he is healthy and has a good preseason he is going to be a valuable contribitor to the team and may force a hard roster cut.  Another WR that I listed above that is still out there and I think the Chiefs should make a run at is Denario Alexander the Chargers made a huge mistake IMO of not giving him a restricted free agent tender that would require us to have to give up a draft pick.  Instead they tendered him original selection which was UDFA so we could probably steal him with a 2 mill per contract.  I can't believe the Chargers got this guy as a street free agent last year when all there WR's went down with injuries, he is a star in the making if you don't believe me watch his college highlights or even his highlights from the Chargers last year.

G - The Geoff Schwartz signing was incredible.  I was calling for this guy last off season.  He is a great G, he has probowl level run blocking which Jamaal Charles will love.  Not sure how they are going to shuffle the O-line but as of right now Geoff and Jon are by far the best G's on the team.  I also love his versatility in that he can slide over to RT if we need him to.  But he is not a starter when it comes to RT.

C - Of the G's I listed above both could play Center at a very high level also.  One got tendered as a 2nd rounder so that isn't going to happen.  But Kevin Boothe would be a huge pick up if we were able to pull that off.  IMO center is one of the biggest needs of this team Rodney Hudson is still somewhat of an unknown at Center as well as the date he will be cleared to play is still up in the air.  I think we could draft a very good Center in round 3 but to start him game one would be scary one mistake and Alex Smith could be done for the season the Center has so many responsibilities.

DE - As I stated above Mike DeVito is one of my other OMG they did it pick ups.  The dude is so under rated not only is he comming in from Suttons D so he will hit the ground running the dude is tough as nails and a great run defender.  And while he didn't rack up the sacks he did get penetration and alter some plays and allow some of his teammates to pick up some sacks.  If your not sold yet just wait you will be.

OLB - yeah we have Tamba and Justin but behind them we have nothing.  Victor Butler has had some visits and is getting some intrest so I don't know if he is going to be a fit cap wise but I'm telling you the guy brings it when he get's on the field he has been stuck on the bench in Dallas but like I said when given the opportunity he gets it done.  And for the last couple of years Tamba's production has gone down not up.

ILB - I have been wanting the Chiefs to upgrade the SILB position for years.  It is a position that comes cheap and I guess we just have to be patient with.  Ellerby got overpaid but there are still plenty of players to pick from and I believe the Chiefs will also draft a SILB.

DB - I'm going to have to admit the Chiefs far exceeded my expectations in this area with Dunta Robinson and Sean Smith but I think it was necessary.  If you want to win this division you are going to have to have good corners and be able to put some pressure on Payton Manning.

S - I'm pretty happy how things have shaped up at the safety position as well.  IMO Dunta Robinson might get some snaps at S and Husain Abdullah was a above average starter for the Vikings before he left football for a chance to persue his off the field dreams.

TE- I didn't see TE as a huge need, but then when we got Alex Smith that need went up IMO.  It is no secret Alex loves to utilize his TE and I think Fasano will be a good addition.  I hope he isn't the starter because I believe Tony Moeaki has a higher upside in the passing game.  However, Fasano can run block at a level Moaki can only dream of at this point in his career.  This is going to be another addition to Jamaal Charles sucsess next year.  So if Andy is smart I think we are looking at a HUGE year out of Charles next year which will also play to Alex Smiths strengths.  I don't think he needs to be in a pass happy offense especially when you have such a special RB in Charles.

We still have some holes, our OT's aren't set, we need a center that will be ready to play game 1 because of Hudsons injury, SILB, outside of that I think we are really lacking some depth in quite a few positions that we will fill in the draft and with some cheap free agents.

Go Chiefs!!!
