A four-year football letterwinner at Western Kentucky University, Irele Oderinde joined the South Carolina strength and conditioning staff in January 2010 working with the men's basketball team. He was in his second season as a member of Notre Dame's staff before leaving for the Gamecocks. At Notre Dame, he was the speed/skills development coach and assisted with the strength program for the Fighting Irish football team while overseeing programs for the track and field, and men's and women's golf teams.
Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Oderinde severed three seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Western Kentucky, and four years on the school's staff. While there, he developed and implemented strength and conditioning programs for the school's men's basketball and softball squads. During his tenure, the Hilltoppers saw a significant increase in vertical leaps and total strength.
Oderinde also assisted with the WKU athletics program's nutrition regimen and was responsible for the purchase of training equipment used by the men's basketball program.
As a senior at WKU, Oderinde recorded a career-best 45 total tackles (31 unassisted) with nine stops for loss including a sack. A starter in 12 of WKU's 13 games, his efforts helped the Hilltoppers rank in the top 20 nationally in four of five team statistical categories.
Oderinde played in 10 games as a junior as WKU won the 2002 Division I-AA (now Bowl Championship Subdivision) national championship, the school's first in any sport. He collected 18 tackles with three for loss and a pass defensed that season. In 2001, he played in all 12 games with three starts, collecting 28 tackles (17 unassisted) with eight stops for loss (20 yds) and three sacks (13 yards).
During his career, WKU posted a 40-13 (.755) record and advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs in four consecutive years for the first time in school history.
