49er's legacy tainted by cocky rookie QB?

February 4, 2013 4:40 pm

You know the funny part about criticizing Colin Kaepernick for being cocky?

One of Alex Smith's greatest flaws as a quarterback was that he WASN'T cocky.  It's a position that takes swagger to play well: you have to be confident enough in your abilities to bounce back from mistakes and get a ball through the occasional tight window (obviously, you can't be TOO self-confident, or you overestimate your abilities and make poor decisions, but all the best quarterbacks have a degree of arrogance about them).   While his humility is refreshing,  Smith constantly struggled with self confidence issues throughout his career.  It's why early on he would second guess himself and hesitate on the field, and even with Harbaugh's encouragement he still avoids risky throws like the plague.  I WANT my quarterback to be at least somewhat cocky.

Also, I don't know who's calling Joe Flacco "humble:" being willing to interact with fans and being humble are two different things.  This is the guy who got laughed at (less so now) for constantly calling himself a top tier quarterback, remember.

Exactly Brees, I don't know if the better overall team won but as most SBs are decided comes down to QB play, in my view, Flacco came ready to play the entire game, understood how to read the defense, did all the subtleties right, the same, in my opinion cannot be said of Colin, it is really simple as that.

49er's legacy tainted by cocky rookie QB?

The outage came and then what?  Allowed the 49ers to NOT get a first down on 3rd and 12 and have to punt?  Yeah, that's a big turning point alright.  Any number of plays could have flipped the outcome, like, for example, not allowing a 108 yard kickoff runback for a TD.  I understand you want to blame the QB (except in New England) in order to fit your parable about "Alex Smith would have won this game" and stir up a QB controversy.  That's fine, but the Niners organization and fanbase have already moved on.  There's no QB controversy.

Also, anyone who thinks Alex Smith would have won that game is, frankly, delusional.  Not with how bad the 49ers defense was playing in the first half: he may have famously kept up with Drew Brees last year, but the New Orleans defense and Baltimore defense are different animals.  There's no way in the world Alex comes back from a significant deficit in that game (he NEVER comes back from significant deficits), and, again, with the secondary being ass I doubt he would have kept it from forming in the first place.

No one is saying there is a qb controversy anymore, for better or worse, Colin is the 49ers qb and will be next year and so forth barring injury.  I hope though Smith finds another starting qb position, he showed class throughout this whole circus.

You guys kill me- you are so quick to jump Kaepernick and call us who support him homers for jumping the Smith ship yet you blatantly ignore everything else.

The best defense in the NFL gave up scoring drives to the Ravens every time they had the ball in the first half. And no the 49ers were not going 3 and out every series so you can't blame it on fatigue. It's hard to stay energized when your defense gives up 3rd and long all day.

I get it, you guys blame it on Kaeps age- and probably rightfully so, but it was Kaep who led the come back in the 2nd half and it was the teams defense that did not hold up their end of the deal.

29 pts- 29. Do you guys not under stand that. Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to 29 pts. Its not like he came out and led the team to 12 pts all on FG. He lead the offense to 29 pts.

Tall, I am not saying necessarily Smith would have won the game, but I doubt they would have gotten behind that much in the first place, with Smith the 49ers control the clock, use Gore a lot, do not turn the ball over and manage time very well and Smith can actually throw short and medium passes very well so I doubt with Smith that 1), the 49ers would throw a pass right to a defender 2) lose two costly timeouts simply because they could not get a play off in time 3) and simply would have controlled the tempo of the game rather than relying on trying to throw the deep ball and basically ignoring using Gore.

Tall White Ninja, I agree about being cocky on the field with a QB's play.  I am talking off the field. Kaepernick has a lot of growing up to do.  And Flacco backed up any claims he made about himself to the fullest extent possible this year.  Flacco is a consumate pro on and off the field.  Kaepernick needs someone to show him how to act off the field.  Only point I am making, and trust me I saw it... He needs to grow up if he is going to flouirish in the league.

All you Smith lovers on here are delusional- it was awful play calling that put the 49ers offense behind the 8 ball againt the Falcons and the Ravens.

Smith would have lost to Atlanta, and this conversation would not even be taking place. Alex Smith had a decent season and a half and all you guys forget how bad he sucked for 5 and a half seasons. And don't give me the o coordinator/ head coach garbage- Kaep came in to the NFL better than Smith.

ghandi, in almost every game when one team is dominating the other team such as Ravens were doing 28-6, the other team usually comes back frantically and makes a game of it, the reality is when the game was close, the 49ers couldn't get it done, fumble lost, int at the worst moment, couldn't get a td until third quarter, etc

Why should we trust you? You Kaep's personal assistant? Did you stock him thru New Orleans? Are you his brother that hung with him all week? What credibility do you have?

And the reality is you refuse to look at the entire team. No way is a 28-6 deficit all blamed on one guy.

Bah, being cocky is fine.  It hurts no one.  When Kaepernick starts breaking the law, drives under the influence or some such, then let me know.

Nope- 6 and a half seasons of watching Smith get behind and not be able to come back is not speculation. Smith proved his futility every game. He was a manager, not a player.
