2008 We Drafted Gholston Instead Of Flaco

February 4, 2013 12:36 pm

It was a terrible Jet draft year like so many others have been and if you look at that draft you would have to say that it was one of the worst in Jets history.

We also moved back into 1st round to draft one of many unproductive TE's that the Jets have been famous for drafting a player by the name of Dustin Keller who IMO should have been drafted in the 5th or 6th round.

I was screaming for Joe Flaco that year and many on this board told me that I was crazy well how many of you will tell me that I am crazy now? If it weren't for a Raven WR dropped pass in the end zone last year during AFC Championship against the Pats who knows maybe Flaco is playing for his 2nd SB.

This Jet organization has made many mistakes and have never been smart enough to draft a QB with potential like Joe Flaco.

The entire draft for that matter was such a bust that only Keller remains and he can't even stay healthy enough to play and still can't block to save his life.

Thank God Tannenbaum is gone for the 2008 draft clearly shows you how clueless Tannenbaum was as a talent evaluator.

Here are our picks in the order they were drafted.

1-Vernon Golston DE ( Need I say more )
1-Dustin Keller TE ( Drafted back up into 1st round forgot how many picks we gave away to get tis unproductive TE )
4-Dwight Lowery CB ( We traded lowery away and he now plays on Jaguars )
5-Erik Ainge QB ( Out of football now a drug counselor after being busted while with NY Jets )
6-Marcus Henry WR ( No longer playing in NFL now plays in Canada )
7-Nate Garner OT ( Now with Miami Dolphins as a back-up who has played sparingly in 13 games over his 5 year career )

The Jet have been wasting so many draft picks not to mention the terrible job Tannenbaum has done with the teams salary cap.

I have been ranting and raving since I joined this message bvoard and now we must go through another losing season in 2013 and then we will have to fire Rex and find a new HC.

It is more likely that these Jets are going to be a very bad football team and unlikely to turn it around unless the Jets have a great draft of which is asking a lot as history has not been kind to us and we still need to find ourselves a QB who is elite otherwise it will be another year of futility for it will be more than likely that Sanchez is the Jets starting QB in 2013.

I just wanted to make a point of just how miserable Tannenbaum has been these past 4 years and you can't leave out Rex Ryan our HC who is clueless about talent evaluating and predicting the future as well as having a clue about his locker room.

It is without question that the state of the team as it is will not be able to compete for a playoff spot and the only competition that they will be playing for is last place in the AFC East.

Congratulations to Joe Flaco for a job well done.

*Flacco

You were right about that one.  I thought Flacco was going to be one of those guys that had a super strong arm but not much else.   Stats aren't everything, but Flacco's career qb rating is higher than Eli Manning.
.

2008 was an ugly draft even by Jets standards.

Flacco went 18 that year so 15 other teams passed on him not just the Jets (I dont count ATL as they grabbed Matt Ryan). Teams miss on draft picks ALL THE TIME, it happens - we move on. College players coming to the NFL are no sure thing to be great or good for that matter. While Flacco has proven himself to the NFL it also has to do with the team he is on. To be a part of a team like BMore with that D and some very nice weapons on O has helped him A LOT. He would not have had the same success in NJ IMO. We just dont have those same weapons.

Since Sanchez has been here we have not had the same weapons as Flacco has had.

A pure possession sure hand WR in Bolden / a deep threat like Smith / Consistant TE like Pitta and Heap / a RB like Ray Rice (LT was good but past his prime). He would be better than Sanchez ABSOLUTELY but he would have had the exact same "weapons". He would NOT have been as good as he is with us unfortunatey.

Regarding Rex, he does have an eye for talent IMO. Coples and Mo will be the anchors of this DLine for years to come as both are only going to get better. He also pulled the trigger on some FA moves and trades that helped get us to 2 straight AFC Championship games.

We all like to bash Sanchez as well but if you look at his numbers in the Playoffs, he is pretty damn good. 9-3 TD/INT ratio / and a QBR of 92.7 and 97.3 and a comp. percentage of 60% - when we make the playoffs, Sanchez has been 1 of the better players on the team

Problem is, the last 2 seasons Sanchez hasnt had the same weapons as he did have. We let go of Cotchery, Jones and Edwards which really hurt Sanchez. You cant keep taking playmakers away and expect the QB to continue to produce - they need help as well.

Rudy, you were 100% right about Flacco.  However, Gholston wasn't a disaster that everyone saw coming from miles away.  There were rumors Gholston was going to go 1st overall, or that the Patriots were going to try and trade ahead of the Jets to get him, so I don't fault the Jets all THAT much for the Gholston pick, but I do remember you kept saying that Flacco would be an excellent pick.  That was a tough year for the Jets, as they had a QB controversy between Pennington and Clemens who, at the time, showed potential, so I can understand why they didn't feel the need to pick up a QB in the first round.  Not saying that it was right, but I understand, especially since the Jets' two biggest problems from a year earlier were the O-line and the lack of pass rush.  The O-line was fixed through FA (then promptly dismantled two years later for no apparent reason) so that left a pass rusher.

All in all though, it still is one of those situations where we Jet fans are shaking our heads wondering what could have been.  Still I wonder, would Joe Flacco end up what he is today if he had been drafted by the Jets?  He's learned under John Harbaugh and been given a lot of tools and great coaching to develop into an excellent QB.  If he was on the Jets, he would have had Mangini, Rex, Schotty, Sparano, and Cavanaugh to develop him.  There's a good chance we might bashing Flacco, yet another Jets' first round bust, wondering why we didn't wait a year to pick up Sanchez, who is now a Super Bowl MVP with some other team.

Nice post GangGreen.  You basically sumarized the insanity being a Jet fan entails.

Props to Flacco, but Anquan Boldin helped Flacco look good. A QB needs weapons.

Boldin was unstoppable. Man that dude was amazin. No wonder he wanted to get away from Fitz in Arizona.  He was cramping his style.  2 great receivers just wasnt going to work on one team.  Boldin pretty much won the SB for the Ravens. If not for him they would hjave never gotten through the playoffs.

You all have made very good points...

Taking that all into consideration I'd say that the 2013 Jets are positioning themselves to be a better team next season.

2008 We Drafted Gholston Instead Of Flaco

I wonder, would Joe Flacco end up what he is today if he had been drafted by the Jets?
I think the reality is that's the most true statement you made.

 He's learned under John Harbaugh
A big advantage over Jets coaches...although I think Schotty was better than the others on your list.

and been given a lot of tools and great coaching to develop into an excellent QB
Just not true. The OL was and is pretty good, but you guys had a good OL too until recently. As far as "tools" or "weaposn" or whatever you want to call them, he's certainly not had much to talk about, other than Rice. No WRs until they traded for Boldin, and he was hurt one year. And last year they finally did get him some weapons, thus he's suddenly "blossomed." Wonder why?

That's where you're right as of now, but prior to now, he's had about what Sanchez has had. Perhaps a lesson the Jets management might study instead of looking around for a scapegoat in order to save their own jobs.
