Should the NFL allow sophomores in the draft?

February 6, 2013 10:15 pm

As you know, NFL allows only kids to enter the draft after 3 years from graduating HS. So, my question is....should they lowered the time to just 2 seasons? Allowing true sophomores to enter the draft. I just think about RBs, we all know they have a very short shelf life. Look at RBs for Bama, Nick Saban chews them, and spits them out. I doubt Richardson will last more than 6 seasons. He has already shown signs of wear and tear. Shouldn't this players have a chance to have an extra year of earning? What say you?

i say no, it's good for the game in my book to let the kids stay in school and mature another year.

No, where does it stop like the NBA.  Bring them in right out of High School. Someone will get killed.  Like the current system.

NFL or College? I think if they are good enough to go out and produce in the NFL, they should do it. Even if I was a potential 7th round draft pick, I would leave college for the NFL and skip my senior season. If RBs could play longer, then I would be okay with keeping the rules as they are.

I doubt any NFL team would draft a kid that is not prepare. They aren't going to draft a kid they can clearly see hasn't fulling grown to a level where he can take a hit from an NFL player.

Right off the bat that sounds logical, BUT now there are option QB's "running QB's" and they have a low shelf life also. So once you open the door then you open arguments for other high risk positions... keep it at 3 years for all or change it for 2 years for all, other players might change their designation on the college team to go out early. So keep it the same for all...

I thought about, how do you define a RB, or a guy that gets carries here and there. And maybe have a certain amount of carries you need in order to declare. So say 625 carries in two season. If you have that many, you may leave. You know what, just make it touches on ball, in case coaches get creative and have QBs pass screens to their RBs, essentially being a hand-off. So if you have more than 625 touches from the backfield, you may leave.

As for the dual QB? I say keep it as it. They don't have to run if they don't want to, for the greater part. They don't receive nowhere as close as the physical pounding a RB does.

Because of all the issues involved and consideration of safety players should be required to graduate with a Batchelor's degree.

I think you would have more "failed" first round picks, there not mature enough to understand the play calls, plus growth.. I think there injuires could be alot more career ending without speeding the time building there bodies up more like they do in college now...

Let me guess... Mel Kiper Jr. came up with this idea too?

You want' a weight limit, but then you want younger, less experienced, less "grown up" players who possibly haven't filled out yet? You are contradictory in your "ideas."

There is nothing wrong right now with people having to wait until 3 years after HS graduation. Physically they are more ready, and most are more mature year 3 than they would be at year 2 as well.

If you don't think an NFL owner would field a guy that wasn't ready you are giving them way too much credit. It is all about the dough.

If Johnny Football could come out right now, he would be a high pick, An owner would snatch him up and throw him to the wolves in order to sell more tickets.

They already do

February 11, 2013 9:49 am

- They do let sophmores in the draft - red shirt sophmores
- They do let true sophmores in the draft - guys that went to prep school after high school (Larry Fitzgerald for example)
- They do let 19 year olds in the draft - if you graduate high school early, you can go to the NFL early (Amobi Okoye for example)
- You can turn pro before the required 3 years - I believe Adrian McPherson did this, going to the Arena League rather than an FCS school when he got kicked out of Florida State.

No. It is short sighted. We'd see more busts, and some players with great potential who would be a college star may just be a bench warmer in the NFL, or get hurt because of the combo of a less experience and being forced to play against better talent than in college.

Players will develop better in college as sophmores than thay would in the NFL. It's not too much to ask players to play at least a couple years of college ball before being drafted.
