I was certain every possible joke about baseball attendance in Florida had been exhausted over the past 20 years. Then I saw the [tweet by Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post that included the photo above] from the [Miami Marlins] Winter Warm Up event Saturday and realized we haven’t even scratched the surface.

The Marlins have used up all of the goodwill a new taxpayer-funded stadium gave them just a year ago. They've made many missteps, but [the massive giveaway with the Blue Jays] turned even[hardcore Fish fans against them]. And it has left them with a line for tickets that's four people long. That's [not including this guy], who wore a Blue Jays cap to the event in protest.

Later on, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald published another photo from the fan fest that is somehow more depressing than Capozzi's: [A completely deserted concession stand]:

maybe all the fans bought the tickets online?  if this is true... 30 minutes before they go on sale... that's really rough

contrast that with the Giants fanfest yesterday,  at least 40,000 people strong, and oh yeah, it was held at the ballpark that the Giants paid for.  Of course the fans have been paying that bill off with massive support, but the point is that they did not force a city and/or state to pay for it.  Not even the Yankees can say that, and they most certainly could have afforded to build their own ballpark.
I feel bad for my friends who are A's fans, but they have it pretty damn good compared to Miami.
Take that franchise away from Loria.  he is worse for baseball than steroids and gambling combined.

The Marlins franchise was able to buy two WS championships but their ownership has been questionable from their inception.  No organization in baseball can shoot itself in the foot any better than the Marlins.

How about a celebrity death match between Loria and the Wilpons. Winner loses his team, loser loses his team? Is this something Mets and Marlins fans can both agree on?

Ownership should really take a look at this and realize how stupid they have been trading away all of their players.  Don't they want to make money?  How do you make money?  FANS!  Period.. No fans = No team or revenue...  stupid stupid stupid.  I don't blame the fans.  Same as Rays fans with that terrible ballpark!

LOL! That is truly hilarious. You have 2 fanbases that do have issues with one another that go beyond their baseball loyalties to the Mets and Marlins (Jets-Dolphins and Knicks-Heat), but both would be happily on board in unison for this idea. It truly would be a hilarious event to see people wearing any of the 6 sports jerseys involved (Mets, Marlins, Jets, Dolphins, Knicks, and Heat) cheering in perfect harmony as they watch the Wilpons and Loria go at each other. It would be even more hilarious when a sniper, who has grown impatient with waiting to see one ownership off the other, just takes both ownerships out and then seeing these fan bases working together to cover it up in a manner more conspiring than the grassy knoll situation.

MLB realy needs to rethink pro baseball in florida, tampa bay is a model franchise that can't draw and the Marlins are well the marlins.

Relocate the two and keep florida for spring training and minor league baseball..

Didn't Loria run the Expos into the ground just about the same way? How does MLB allow this guy to continue owning a franchise.

His buddy bud helps

In 2002, as part of an orchestrated move with [Bud Selig] and then-Marlins owner [John W. Henry], Loria sold the Expos to "Expos Baseball, LP," a partnership of the other 29 major league clubs, for $120 million. In effect, the Expos were sold to the commissioner's office. Henry then sold the Marlins to Loria for $158.5 million, including a $38.5 million no-interest [loan] from MLB. The deal was approved by the other owners before Loria and Henry even signed a contract, and paved the way for Henry to buy the [Boston Red Sox]

..................

Loria was only the half of it.

Bud's sweetheart deal allowed Henry, the Marlins owner to slide into the Boston ownership, even though his group was outbid significantly by Dolan.

As a Ranger/Knick fan, I can only dream of what could have been.
