Our OC Olson- QB situation

February 13, 2013 9:49 pm

This from Olson today:

You've got to be able to be flexible and adapt your system to the players that you have at any given year," Olson said. "So, our job as a coaching staff will be to identify the skill set of the players, who are our best players, what do they do best, and how can we put them in position to be successful and do what they do best."

Man, its amazing how this simple, main logic of the football, is so neglected to many coaches. If the players can play in a new system good. If not, as it happened last season, its so important that the coaches understand that their role is not to force things, but to find the ways to be successful, both them and the team.

Yeah and we had to watch 16 games last season where we refused to use our players in a manner suitng their talents. Players that were playmakers the season before became worthless and it put us in a state of mind where we beleive none of our players have talent.

Im not stating that TPryor is the hidden gem. I really hope and wish he is, since Im a Raider fan. What matters more to me about Olson´s statements this morning is what- although he was talking about our QB situation and that he will put much more time (snaps) to Pryor- he defines the job of coaches is. So plain and simple. You are a step ahead already with that thinking

The best part was that he really like Reece and is going to utilize him accordingly.

I'm not so sure about that. I dont think anyone (even the we're rebuilding crew) ever said that our offense lacked talent. Anyone with a brain knows that Greg Knapp is the main reason that our offense was so pathetic. Our offense is pretty much ready to hit the ground running right now, all we really need to do is add a few O-lineman and we're good to go.

The defense is what needs a major overhaul as we simply dont have the talent to be elite or even above average. People bash D.Allen and Tarver for the defense but I think they did a great job considering what they had to work with. Not only did they lack talent but they were given an offense that couldnt score or even sustain drives. Having an offense that fails to control the clock and is always going 3 & out is very tough for a defense. Especially one that already sucks.

Dennis Allen was simply handed a terrible defensive situation. How can anyone expect good things when we didnt have ANY shut down CB's, ANY viable pass rushing DE's and we didnt have a single true run stopping DT on the roster. Those are the three most important things needed when building a great defense and we had none of it. The fact that our best player (Seymour) did play for the last half of the season didnt do us any favors either.

When the draft and free agency starts, Reggie should have ONE word buried in his head.....DEFENSE!!!!

We got a coach who passed Coaching 101!!!!

The more reserved part of me says he knows the right thing to say... Let's wait and see how well he executes.

McFadden should be pushing 1000 yards by game 9 if he is healthy and Heyward-Bey should easily be on pace for a 1200+ yard season. If those two things don't happen then he is a failure.

I don't know what message board you have been visiting, but that is exactly what 99.99% of every posts has said - this team (O, D, ST) has little talent except kickers.  I am not saying they are right or wrong, just that that is exactly the sentiment expressed on these boards.    Maybe 'anyone' isn't say that, but 'everyone else' is.

Olsen seemed like he is really intrigued to find out what Pryor can do more so than what Carson is. I believe he wants to start Pryor this season and if so then they need to trade Carson to a team that can use him, Cleveland and Arizona come to mind.

Who said this? I want NAMES!!! lol

We had a top 10 offense in 2011 under Hue and we didnt lose any quality starters on offense in 2012. You may be right that people have said we dont have talent on offense but I dont remember it. I definitely havent heard it enough for you to say that "everyone else" has been saying it. Sure our O-line is soft but there's more than enough weapons to be successful.

Now our special teams and defense on the other hand, they need major reconstructive surgery...

I've seen a lot of people saying things like "We don't have a #1 wide receiver", "We need a new quarterback", "We need to cut or trade Darrius Heyward-Bey", and "We need to cut or trade Darren McFadden".

I realize Olson isn't a big time OC or anything. But I can't help but get
excited with the possibilities. Seriously, adapting to our own guys is going to
make our offense that much better. Plus we picked up Sparano so in addition to
our OL going back to a scheme that worked for them, they'll have excellent
coaching. While that is happening, Reggie and DA begin to weed out the bad seeds.  And
players that fit Allen and Tarver's D will start trickling in soon. Once that
happens and TC rolls around we should see a huge improvement overall imo.
Anyone remember when Hue came in to be the OC? He wasn't a huge name, he just
used our offensive personal right.(What a concept!) And we took off offensively.  I think
offensively we wont be bad, Knapp really ruined us, we just need to solidify the OL.
Personally I think this team will improve by leaps and bounds, and next year we can draft that Elite QB.

Pryor still has to win in camp. He definately has a higher ceiling than Palmer obviously but he has to prove he won't throw ducks. Situation very similar to San Fran with Smith and Kaepernick, but Kaepernick can straight up sling the rock. DA will have tough decision

I doubt Pryor beats Palmer out in camp, but I really liked Pryor's command of the offense & he showed great leadership out there. Throwing him out there this year would be too soon, but learning one more year should help him make great strides.

Olsen offensively having a clue should help us win more games this year.  Huge strike on DA for not selecting this type of OC before & wasting a year.  Either way I hope we can start moving in the right direction again.

If Pryor had Palmer's arm we would be good to go. But even now I think Terrelle Pryor will beat out Palmer, they should give him a chance to get some 1st team reps in preseason to see how he does, but that probably wont happen.

Olsen was definitely a Reggie McKenzie hire for that statement goes against everything Dennis Allen stands for.

I dont understand what the urgency is to cut or resolve the sitution with Palmer is and yet when you read if they wait until June 1st they can spread the cap hits over 2 years for the likes of DHB, Slo Mac and Tommy Kelly. Why wouldn't they wait until after June 1st for Palmer if they intend to cut him? He isnt due a roster bonus. The same amount of money they are gonna lose regardless on him and on top of that they tip their hand as to eventually drafting a qb at some point and time in the draft seeing as Pryor would be the only qb on roster.

It wouldn't suprise me much if they didnt bring back Jason Campbell if they did cut Carson. There was a somewhat mutiny between Jacoby Ford amongst others when Palmer was brought on board even though it wasn't his fault Campbell decided to dive not once but twice head first into on coming traffic.
