How do you view Dwight Freeney?

February 15, 2013 10:18 pm

To me, a good all aroudn player/great pass rusher

He was more built for the dome than the Colts offense was...........he needed the lead, needed the speed...........i can't tell you how many times i watched the pats run draws/screens right at him

A very overrated player IMO

i'd love him on the Jets as a 3rd down pass rusher..........Mathis was always the better DE on the colts

How do you view Dwight Freeney?

Didn't want to be disrespectful so I went good player, great pass rusher. I was thinking the average player/good pass rusher which he truly he is. He is over-rated like you said. He had a good game vs Steelers with Kerry Collins/Painter was QB in 2011. After the game, all the praise he received was ridiculous. He didn't even end up having a good year in 2011. I claimed he is over-rated because you know Steelers line stinks as well as anybody. Someone posted a list of like 20 players who could have been great in any era. I think it may have been posted on ESPN with someone posting it having Dwight Freeney on the list. Isn't that insane? He couldn't have played the run back in those days. All he is good for is his pass rush and hasn't been able to do that in recent years. I blasted anybody who praised this dude. I mean after that game, I realized how over-rated he truly was by doing research. Got a bunch of 1 star ratings from stupid Colt fans, but I didn't care. I was speaking my mind and I truly believe he is as over-rated as a defensive player as they come.

and look up his stats too

some decent sack numbers, not all pro stuff, compared to the greats, but decent

no INT's though......not one drop back into zone and catch it..................horrible tackle numbers (for comparison, Jared Allen has 410 tackles in 141 games, Dwight Freeney has 266 in 163 games).............only 14 passes defended

this guy is so overrated

How do you view Dwight Freeney?

He's currently 21st all time in career sacks. Even when he wasn't piling up sacks in those couple of years in 2006 and 2007, he was still a force to be considered. He had 7 seasons of 10+ sacks (more than Michael Strahan).

He was a phenomenal pass rusher. One of the best. Where he falls short was in his run stopping ability.

He's definitely not HOF material, but calling him overrated seems a bit much.

A very good pass rusher, probably not hall of famer tho. 7 pro bowls is a lot  but idk how he stacks up with similar players. Woud love him on the pats. As good as he was all those years, he never really killed the pats. Matt Light always held up pretty well vs him for the most part.  Freeney made the whole Colts d-line better by teaching them his spin move. Mathis might not be half the player he is without playing with Freeney.

So what? If you're going to ding him for that, then you ding everyone. That means sacks are completely useless and not worth tracking.

B) it's a passing league now
So once again, sacks are meaningless.

21st is such a misleading number
No, it's not. He consistently put up a lot of sacks in a lot of years. He was a really good pass rusher, who never quite was the best. Just because he's the best doesn't mean he sucks and is overrated. Do you think JPP sucks now because he only got 5.5 sacks this year?

he isn't overrated because he isn't quite the best pass rusher. he is overrated because he is horrible against the run, yet people constantly call(ed) him an elite DE. an elite DE must be good in both. if people call you that, but you're good in only one (typically pass rushing, as stopping the run won't be in the highlights), you are overrated.

anyway, i think he is/was a great pass rusher and an average player.

Good points Scuba ! As a Colt fan I have been interested in what people are saying. I think that during his prime, he was 1 of the best pass rushers in the league. He made everyone on the DL better, the OL had to be aware of where he was at all times and his double team made it easier for Mathis and the rest of the D-line. He was never much of a run stopper but his 1st step was as fast and spin move was un-matched for a man of his size. Hall of Fame ? I say yes, but not first ballot.

i don't think he makes it. you don't have to be reggie white to make the HOF, but freeney is completely one dimensional. he is so bad against the run that i think it will keep him out.

I don't recall how long it took Derrick Thomas of the Chiefs to make it but Freeney has 7 ProBowl's and top 25 all time sacks should be enough but like Im a Colt Fan so we will have to see after he calls it a career.

I dont "ding" everyone, i take the number for what it's worth......saying someone is 21st in league history for sacks is misleading because it is not league history, it is since sacks were counted...so how many players have played their full careers counting sacks.....he is 21st amongst them......

21st is such a misleading number

JPP also had 43 tackles, a number Dwight Freeney has hit a grand total of 1 time in his entire career, JPP had 5 passes defended, a number dwight freeney has never hit in his career......last year JPP had 72 tackles.......Dwight Freeney in an 11 year carrer has had more than 40 tackles, 1 time.....has never assisted in more than 6 tackles, in a year....an entire year.

And that's irrelevant. It's no different than looking at passing and receiving numbers compared to 20 or 30 years ago. I'm not trying to say Freeney is one of the greatest ever. I've already said I don't think he's a HOFer. But since the stat has been tracked, he is 21st all time. He was very consistent. He had more double digit sack seasons that Michael Strahan, and more than most players who've ever played since sacks were an official stat.

JPP also had 43 tackles, a number Dwight Freeney has hit a grand total of 1 time in his entire career, JPP had 5 passes defended, a number dwight freeney has never hit in his career.....
And I'm not trying to compare him to JPP either. But you dinged Freeney for having 2 down years in 2006 and 2007 with his sack totals. Freeney rushed the passer and that's about it. He was DAMN good at what he did. It's a matter of perspective. If people are trying to argue that he's a great all-around DE, then yeah, I'd agree he is overrated. But then again, I don't think people consider him a great all-around DE like a JPP or a Strahan. But Freeney was an elite pass rusher. There's no question about that IMO. He had to be accounted for at all times.

i see him as a great pass rusher when he's in the right system. Example, Atlanta MAY let Abraham go, so say Freeney goes there....then he would be back on his game again. the 3-4 isnt the best fit for Freeney, but the 4-3 is. he has lost a step, but he can still rush the passer well.

Freeney is one dimensional, and that never leads to all around greatness. He is a great pass rusher, but just good all around player.
