Wes Welker

It is looking more and more likely Wes Welker is going to be a free agent.  According to the following article NE will not use their franchise tag on him:

I think if they can't get a deal done with Bowe that he would be a guy that would do well in a Reid/WC style offense.  The plus side would be that he would be much cheaper than Dwayne Bowe.  He is getting up there in age, and there is always the concern that he would not fare well outside the NE system.  These should lower his contract value on the open market.  We could use the savings on other needs.

Bowe is currently the Chefs #1 WR.  Welker is not a #1...he's a slot guy.  Also, from what we've heard he wants a fairly hefty contract.  He may be effective outside the NE system but quite frankly I don't see him being as productive as his contract will say he should be, even if it's "discounted" from what he is currently looking at.

Like Welker, but the stars would have to align just right for me to like this move.

Yeah, I hear ya '77.  I just think these intermediate route guys will be needed to run the Reid Offense.  I love his toughness and field awareness.  To change out Bowe for Welker, we would need Baldwin to step it up so WW could man the slot.  This would still create a need for another outside guy.

Definitely...I'd take Welker but it'd have to be the right deal.  Right now I think he thinks he's worth more than he is.  Also, I know this is not what you meant but your OP came across as potentially replacing Bowe with Welker which we know doesn't work.  As you stated, Baldwin would have to step it up and/or they'd have to find another guy too.  Well, they probably need to find another guy anyway.

if welker can be signed for a fair deal i would sign him to a 2 yr deal, then see if we could trade or swing a deal for Percy Harvin, mayb use breaston and a late rd pick for harvin

Percy Harvin is a great player but his health and ability to stay on the field is certainly a cause for concern.  Same type of situation...for the right price go ahead.

Greg Jennings is the guy to get. Not resigning Bowe or paying Wes Welker.

All of these guys everyone mentions would be great "for the right deal". What makes anyone think that the franchise that cheers guys getting hurt is going to draw stud FA's for any kind of discount? Most aging stars like Woodsen and Welker want to finish their career playing for a team that has a shot to make the championship. That's a damn tough sell for the Chiefs right now.

As for Percy Harvin it sounds like the Minny GM is backing away from actively shopping him. If the Vikes did decide to trade Harvin the price would be a Kings ransom. To top it off, Harvin wants a Fitz/Calvin type contract. Crazy talent, but even crazier thinking for a guy who has both physical and attitude issues.

I keep hearing people say if we can't get bowe then we need to get certain receivers. People need to be saying they need to get bowe locked up so they can concentrate on other things like getting ANOTHER receiver. We need bowe and a guy like welker if the west coast style offense is going to be successful here. Maclin would be my personnel favorite choice.

Chiefs have released Breaston and Boss. Guess they will need a better trade chip now.

If the Chiefs were in the situation that one or two players could make them a Championship team I would say take a strong look at Welker. Thats what I figure he has in him one or two good years. Since that is not the case I woul d pass on him unless he comes really cheap and willing to sign a short contract. Since it looks like it may take a couple years to become competitive I would go with someone that is a little younger. Even with a top QB which will be difficult to find in this draft class and the talent we do have it will take at least a couple years to put it all together.

Listened to NFL Radio on Sirius last night.  Bill Polian was talking Bowe.  Says he would never would have drafted him...too many drops.  So, I wouldn't resign Bowe, and BTW Welker isn't coming to KC.  I agree that he will go to a contender.  Wouldn't be surprised to see him in Denver, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, of SF.  Plus Welker would want to know who will throw him the ball.  So going after Maclin and Jennings would make way more sense to me.  However I don't run the team so Dorsey and Reid will have to figure it out on their own.  Got to trust their judgement.
