Combine - Saturday (TE/K/OL)

February 22, 2013 6:42 pm

In case anyone has lost track, the Combine is upon us, with full coverage beginning this weekend on NFL Network.
I'll be creating threads for each day (group) for anyone who happens to be watching and sees anything interesting, or any reports of note, etc.

Up first - The TE'S, Kickers and Offensive Lineman.
Looking at things from a Miami perspective....

The Te's should be worth watching.  After a lackluster group last year (my opinion was there was literally 1 guy worth drafting out of the whole group) this year features some potential difference makers.  Could this be the year Miami finds their fit at the position for the future?
Eifert and Ertz are at the top, but this is a group where value may be found later on with guys like Rivera and Otten who will go much later.
Tomorrow I'll be watching for the overall size/speed combo (are they a guy that can create mismatches and really spark this offense) and we'll have a chance to see their fluidity, route-running and hands.  As with all positions, it will be the position specific drills I am interested in watching.

Kickers - Whatever, time to do some errands.

The Offensive Line - Seems to be a hyped group.  After watching the Senior Bowl practices I'll go on record and say that Eric Fisher is for real, Joeckel and Warmack also seem to be beloved by all, but early projections have 6-7 Tackles going in the first.  Can their possibly be that many guys worthy of such a grade in one draft?
I'll be looking at those 1st-2nd round tackles after Joeckel and Fisher.  The combine certainly will not give you the full picture of any player, much less a lineman, but the position drills will allow you to see a players technique, and gauge their foot speed/footwork, which is very important if Miami is looking to replace Long and were talking about guys that would need to play LT and protect the blindside.
As interesting will be the Guard position and looking for guys who better fit the "scheme".  Who are the guys that may be a bit smaller, but quicker and have the potential to excel in a zone-blocking scheme, because right now I have no idea the names of those guys, and chances are those are the types of guys you may be able to find in the third round and beyond.  Tomorrow will be the first chance to see and identify these types.

All the fun begins tomorrow, let the over-reactions begin.  Laughing

I'll be watching Barrett Jones to see if he has the quickness for RT, along with some other tackler whose name escapes me... Ansua or something.

True, I just never think of Kickers when I'm thinking of our picks.

I've been frustrated with Carpenter at times, but I still don;t think I'd be openly looking to replace him, but you're right, when you get to the last few rounds, value could dictate going that route.

Is Jones the guy that played like every OL position for Alabama over his 4 years?

Carpenter is one of the highest paid kickers in the league.

Not a 'fan favorite' selection but if we were left with OG Cooper then it would be find with me.  Very impressive.  Fisher will be gone but these two look head and shoulders better then the others in Group #1.

Starting to watch now, fast-forwarded through the 40's and now checking out the drills - You're right ProGolf Cooper looked very quick and athletic for his side.

On the other side of the spectrum.......Jeebus! That was cringe-worthy watching Fluker have to move.

The best part of these drills is seeing these guys in one place, one after another, you can see who really stands out.

In this first group - Frederick from Wisconsin also stands out.
A Wisconsin Lineman isn't a bad bet, but it looks like he's a Center.

One of the most interesting comments made was by Mayock.  When we saw that Chance Womack ran slower then you rym Mayock said, it in no way matters.  He stated, without exception, that he still thought that the best player in this draft was Chance Womack.  He did say earlier that there wasn't much difference between Womack and Cooper.  But gave Womack a leg up on Cooper.

Looks to be deep talent at TE.  We should pick up someone pretty decent at either of our 2's or even someone at our 1st #3.  Other then either Eifert or Ertz did anyone see someone that might be a good fit for the Phins'?  The reason that I asked the question as I did is that the top two won't be around at our first #2.  But would be considered a clear reach at 12.

Combine - Saturday (TE/K/OL)

This from Phinsider.com

Several of the draft-related conversations I've had with Chris Early over the last two months have revolved around the Dolphins' need for a tight end, and whether it's possible that the team will use a third- or fourth-round selection to address the position. In January, our collective thought was "maybe." Today, it's "f'n definitely." Why? Because during the time we've put in as amateur scouts this offseason, we've found at least four tight end prospects that, in our opinion, totally satisfy what the Dolphins are looking for at the position. Best part? Neither Notre Dame's Tyler Eifert nor Stanford's Zach Ertz are on the list. That's positional depth, ladies and gentlemen.

1. Gavin Escobar, San Diego State

Escobar is almost unarguably the most complete prospect in this year's tight end class, as he brings excellent size (6'5 7/8", 254), good speed (4.88) and fantastic hands to the position. His ability to box out and go up and elevate for jump balls reinforces his potential as red zone threat at the next level. What ultimately has Escobar as the alpha dog on this list is his toughness and reputation as a ruthless, technically-sound blocker, and he looks equally comfortable in in-line and flex-out roles. The only downside to Escobar is that he could climb into the second round. Good for him; bad for Miami.

2 Jordan Reed, Florida

Reed had a somewhat disappointing weigh-in, as he came in nearly a full 2 inches shorter than his listed height of 6'4" at Florida, and his weight of 236 is rather slim for the position. Still, the dynamic skill set (good speed, great catch radius, outstanding ability as a route-runner), and that'll make him a potential match-up nightmare at the next level. Oddly enough, his official height of 6'2" will draw plenty of comparisons to another former Gator tight end: Aaron Hernandez. And like Hernandez, Reed is a speedier prospect who does his best work after the catch. I see some Dustin Keller in his game, as well.

3. Vance McDonald, Rice

McDonald's been on a steady rise ever since the show he put on at the Senior Bowl, and his 31 reps on the bench press yesterday morning in Indianapolis will only further confirm that the former Rice tight end is the real deal as a multi-dimensional threat at the position. He's big and strong enough (6'4", 267) to qualify as an ideal in-line prospect, but athletic enough to bust the seam and create after the catch. The only factor holding back McDonald's stock as a day two lock is the lack of big-time competition he saw while at Rice.

4. Joseph Fauria, UCLA

An absolute skyscraper (6'7", 260) at the position, Fauria lacks ideal athleticism and strength, yet still qualifies as a prototypical seam guy thanks to his reach, massive hands (10 7/8") and top-notch ball skills. Now, he does have the speed to make things happen after the catch, but he's a bit of a rumbler who has to work up to top gear. Lacks the overall base strength to hold up as an in-line guy, and that will hurt his overall evaluation. Still, he's arguably the biggest red zone threat in this year's class.

Not to say many of them looked "bad", but I didn't notice a guy.
Either I was losing interest at that point, or it seemed like they didn't broadast many of the actual drills for the TE's, outside of the 40.
All I recall seeing was a couple deep routes for each, so it's tough to draw many conclusions from just that.

My takeaway from today was that I lost track of all the athletic lineman I saw this morning.
Impressive group.

1) Mayock's third choice was Escobar.  I wasn't impressed with his speed but his ball skills were certainly impressive.  Never saw a ball hit his body and it appeared that he picks up the ball very fast.

2) Reed--His speed is impressive but I missed him catching the ball except for a deep out.

3) Mayock's biggest riser was McDonald.  Did everthing top notch and his athletic skills were the best of the bunch.  He thinks that he may of put himself somewhere in the second.  Perhaps at our 2nd #2?

4) Fauria-missed him entirely.

You've found some good ones but they seem to be rising a bit faster then hoped.

Gavin Escobar would be a nice consolation prize. But, yes. They must target a TE and get him.

Combine - Saturday (TE/K/OL)

February 24, 2013 8:59 pm

Before the combine we knew the draft was deep at TE, that notion has become even stronger as the combine has gone on - While I think WR is our biggest need to address in the draft NO MATTER what we do in FA - TE is the second. We should address both positions within the first couple of rounds... I say we go after 1 TE since we have a couple of young was already to work with even if we lose Fasano...And go after a pair of young WR no matter what we do at the position in FA... We can get a deep threat and a complimentary guy easily in the first couple of rounds at WR... We need to load up the weapons on the offensive skill positions through the draft no matter what we do in FA... the more the better.
