Combine - Sunday (QB/RB/WR)

February 23, 2013 4:29 pm

Fun day tomorrow.

Most of my attention will be with the Wr's, though the QB situation will be interesting to see play out.  I can say it's interesting because thank god Miami is not going to be one of the teams to have to gamble on these guys.

Looking forward to see all the Wr's, but two in particular.

Patterson - I imagine he'll put up all the desirable measurables, so I'll be watching the drills.  How is he running routes, how fluid is he in and out of his breaks, is this guy going to be a project or is he a future star.
The irony is most of us would want to see him look like a star, but if that is the case tomorrow, he may no longer be an option at #12.  I'm seeing more and more mocks have Patterson to the Jets, and if he shines tomorrow he could become a Top 10 guy.

My guy Austin - There's talk of a sub 4.4 40, reports that he's run as low as 4.29, so the pressure is on.
Honestly I wasn't even expecting near that kind of time, as I've had the impression that his best attribute was his quickness (his feet, and ability to cut) rather than pure straight line speed.  I figured he's shine in stuff like the cone drills, but was unsure about the 40.
Now all eyes will be on him when he gets to the line, we'll see what he does.
Then he'll have the chance to answer his critics and we'll see how he looks as a "real Wr".  If he doesn't look the part, it'll be even more obvious since you'll be able to directly to compare him to the other guys there with him.  I expect him to surprise people - that elite fut speed can allow him to come out of breaks fast and run precise routes......but if that isn't the case, and he runs poor routes and shows poor hands, even I may back off a bit.  It will be interesting indeed.

So yeah....Like I've been saying.  I'd like to draft the guy that's the fastest guy in the league, has the feet and vision of a Sanders or Sayers, and who was a highly productive and darn good football player at a major college.
You want to add a spark to the offense, I'll take that guy.  Tongue out

(now hopefully he doesn't suck in the drills lol)

Your main man T. Austin---4.25.  I guess that takes care of any chance that he would fall to us in the 2nd.  Sorry for you rym, I know how much you wanted him.  Granted he will be super explosive while on the field.  But at that body type it's a good chance that he may get beaten up and have to do some rehab, perhaps on a regular basis.  But I'll will admit that getting a clean shot at him will be difficult.

What are your thoughts on Miles Austin, Dallas if he is released?  Dallas is 18 mil over the cap.  Nice work Jerry.

Except for a history of hamstring injuries (the last two) he has as good a resume as any other FA.  Also has a history with Ireland.  His first big find.  Austin at five or six mil and get that speed reciever in the draft?  And there seems to be plenty of speed in the draft.  Next is matching the speed with some talent.

When Miles Austin is healthy I'd put him in the same class as Wallace.
In terms of value and what they bring to the offense I'd think of those two very similarly, I know Wallace may be quicker, but Austin has also shown he can stretch the field and may be better running the complete route tree.
If you could get Austin for less money, or in a better deal, that could be the better move.

FWIW I never have thought there is any chance in hell he'd be available with oue 2nd round pick.
For that to have happened he'll have had to slip by the smart drafting teams, and then if by some chance that did happen, he'd have to get by the bad teams like Cleveland and the Jets, that themselves are desperate for speed and playmakers.

I've been working under the assumption the only way you'd get him is by drafting him #12, or getting more creative where you traded down and then took him, or traded back into the first using some of our other picks.
Plus I've also had the feeling all along he is much higher on boards than people realize......If you notice there are more and more articles and "experts" singing his praises.  While he was being "projected" late first, early second it does no good for Gm's to talk him up....Best to shrug it off, mention something about him being small and keep your mouth shut......So yeah, I have always figured late-1st round for him at worst.

Woods and Wheaton were the two WR's past the first-round that I liked coming into today, they've done nothing to change that thus far.

I really like woods in the 2nd round if we land a free agent wr.   Great value cause the guy is just a good dam football player.

Swope ran a 4.34 40, winds up the same as Austin's official time.
Think that may be a bit b.s. since on the simulcast Austin is literally neck and neck with Goodwin (who went 4.27) but whatever, at the end of the day they are all fast and I didn't realize Swope had that kind of speed.

Goodwin was fastest, but Charles Davis pointed out "Tavon Austin is a football player that just happens to run like a track star, Marquise Goodwin is a track star who is trying to learn to play football."
You could probably insert Swope's name there for Austin as well, and is reason to not get too excited with the fastest time there by Goodwin.

Swope is looking like a possible good thrid round pick. Seems to be almost as fast as Austin, and has worked with Tannehill before.

He certainly didn't hurt himself. He's well spoken, seems to be a worker. I really like him. He is going to break a few ankles.

Bray may be my favorite of the entire Qb group, long term.

It sucks for Allen that he did not participate today, with the showing many of the guys had today it can't have helped him, especially with reports that his stock was slipping a bit as it was.

Bray was mine coming into the season. He's very much like Mallett, albeit slightly less polished. But the similarity of their measurables and their personalities and percieved character "issues" are remarkable.

Bray was mine coming into the season.

That's why I threw in "long term".
Things didn't work out well for him this past year, but I don't think all his talents disappeared.
He has the physical tools needed, it may take a couple years, but if he lands in the right spot he could wind up the best of the group.  And unlike some of the others, you'll probably be able to get him at a pick that corresponds with the uncertainty attached to him.  If I'm a team that needs a QB, I'd rather have Bray in the late 2nd-3rd than say a guy like Glennon that may take a 1st.

After this combine stuff I'm going to go back to trying to shut up about Austin for a bit.....but for now, I do have an Austin fun fact. lol
FWIW I did notice an interesting number today - Austin actually has bigger hands than Patterson.
Nearly an inch on other 6'0" and under guys like Swope.

The news that West Virginia receiver Tavon Austin ran an unofficial 4.25-second 40 (which officially was adjusted to 4.34 seconds) was eye-opening but not surprising.

The numbers, which strip away the potential illusions created by game film generated against inferior talent, confirm the best quote we heard from an NFL G.M. while attending the Scouting Combine.

“He runs like he has a rocket in his ass,” said the G.M. on Thursday. (He didn’t request anonymity, but we’ll assume he didn’t want to have his name attached to the remark.)

Apart from the fact that it conjures one hell of an image, there’s a new nickname for Austin floating around in there, somewhere.
