They've got a head coach who doesn't like to run. If their future relies on this kid. We've only got Denver to worry about.

Alex Smith and Andy Reid will be tied together in KC. (USATSI) On Sunday during the 2013 NFL Combine, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported that the 49ers had a deal in place to trade Alex Smith. The other team involved was still a mystery, although La Canfora pointed to the Chiefs as "the most likely destination for Smith." That is actually the case now as Smith's going to Kansas City, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms. The deal, first reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, can't be official until March 12. It's not particularly stunning that the Chiefs were the team in on Smith. But it is stunning news to hear the rumored compensation for Smith -- Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury-News reports that the Chiefs gave up a second-round pick in 2013 and a second-round pick in 2014 in exchange for Smith. That's a large amount in exchange for Smith, who was struggling in San Francisco prior to the arrival Jim Harbaugh. Glazer noted that the Chiefs have made a "clear commitment" to Smith and, um, well, yeah they have. It also probably means that Smith's going to sign a contract extension in Kansas City once he's free to do so.

I read that the 2014 pick is conditional so if that's the case it isn't that bad a deal for them.

I don't agree with this part.  Reid has had a long history of successful running backs.  McCoy, Westbrook, Deuce Staley, even.

If their future relies on this kid. We've only got Denver to worry about.
Agree.  San Fransisco fleeced KC in this deal.  And to piggy back off that, I never got the Andy Reid love fest.  I always thought he was pretty underwhelming.  Struck me as a guy who thought he and his system were smarter than anyone else in the room.  He'd set up a bunch of plays that manufacture yards/pad stats and point to that as "success".  He also struck me as one of those guys who thought his "great system" meant he didn't need good players to play in it.  That he could avoid plugging talented people in, or swap out one talented guy for some 7th round nobody and still be successful.  Not quite.  At best, he's an 8 or 9 win coach for a year or so, before all their talent gets run off.

Its not a terrible move for KC. They need a game manager with that defense and he has some mobiiity. The compensation if its correct what they stated is insane. A 2nd rd pick this year and one next year for Smith who only showed real life under Harbaugh.

The division could get real interesting if another rumor shows any life. It has been rumored/ talked about that the Dolts may move Philip Rivers IF they cant get enough offensive lineman to help them and that may be the case. He has taken a beating the past couple of years and they are going through a changeover with a new GM and new head coach themselves. Why pay a guy all that money who is getting hammered without a running game and several needs popping up as well? The Browns have been rumored to be big on Ryan Mallet but they dont have a 2nd rd pick and thats what the Pats want in the least for him. But they could be willing to move that first if it was for Rivers that would give SD the 6th overall pick to go along with the 11th.

The division could be up for grabs especially if an injury happened to Peyton. Nobody is immune from injury. But Oakland needs a lot of help as well. We very well could see every team in the division going through some growing pains at the same time.

That's more in line with what the compensation should have been for Palmer.

2 second rounders for Alex Smith? Who's yardage totals are similar to JaMarcus's over his career?

Way too much for the dude. They are high to think this is the future.

And Joekel will be protecting him I guess...

180 yards a game over his career. 180! Palmer averaged 240 over his career, and even more in Oakland.

No effin way that compensation for Palmer should have been the same as Alex Smith. Anyone who even says that, lacks so much credibility.

Congrats to KC for replacing Matt Cassell with Matt Cassell. Maybe someone should give them Trent Dilfer's number... or maybe Scott Mitchell still has soemthing in the tank.

Does this mean that the Chiefs are going to go after offensive linemen in the draft?  It would make a lot of sense.  I know that it will upset the apple cart a bit, but do they go after Chance Warmack with the number 1 pick?  They could pick up a few offensive linemen with Warmack and Albert.  Alex Smith isn't a bad QB, just a game manager, but if you give him enough time and a couple weapons, he can be dangerous.  They actually do have a few weapons already, so they shouldn't be overlooked.

If he can just hold on to the ball after the center snaps it to him that in itself should be good enough for about 2-3 wins. Reggie better have a hell of plan this draft or we will be looking up at everyone next year. Not saying Smith is all that but we are regressing fast.

LOL, but I understand what you are saying.  However, the Raiders need to worry about everyone and not overlook anyone.   Based on the team today, do you think we are better than KC or SD or anybody else?  We need to focus on ourselves because our problems are with our team, not Denver, or KC, or SD, or another AFC team or an NFC team for that matter.

The Chiefs can now draft OL / DL.  They either go LT (there are two quality LT worth the #1 pick) or DE or DT (several worthwhile players).

No way would KC draft a guard in Warmack when a franchise LT in Luke Joeckel will be there for the taking.

Yeah, the Chiefs gave up wayyyy too much for Alex Smith.  This is a guy who lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick while he was injured.  What does that say about the faith the 49ers staff had in him?  The only way smith succeeds in KC is if they keep the offense very simple for him and they run Charles and rely heavily on him.  Still two 2nd rounds is way too much.  The 49ers are in great shape for the future.  At least someone in the bay area is good i suppose.

Let's not forget KC still has the first pick in the draft which means they could still possibly trade down get a decent O lineman and possibly pick up Barkley further down who I think fits their system more than Geno Smith.

Hey Coach This, you're right that he's had success with running backs, but he drastically under utilizes them when it comes to traditional running. LeSean McCoy is easily a top 5 back when used properly. JGRaider, honestly I do think we are better than everybody except Denver. We should have been divisions champs 2 seasons ago. Carson is a top 10 QB and a healthy McFadden is a top 3 back. It's seriously just coaching a and a player or two away from being a consistent playoff team.

LeSean McCoy was a 2nd rounder. If he touches the talent you suggest, you have a hard time arguing that getting top 5 production out of a 2nd round pick was somehow a bad deal.

Bottom line is nobody in the division has to worry about the Raiders for another couple years.  Reggie will get issues figured out and build through the draft, just like Green Bay does.

Devil, I feel the only way this division is up for grabs is if Manning gets hurt. They have at least one good year left with Manning if he stays healthy. I feel the rest of us will be battling it out for second. The year after is a whole 'nother story.
