Total overpayment on this one, if the rumors are true.....

Add that with Andy Reid's track record of forgetting his Running Backs and leaning heavily on his QBs, and this move doesn't really scare me all that much.

More Alex Smith than Jamaal Charles works for me. lol

The new 49ers regime is kicking some major tail too.  If this trade holds up, it'll bring SFO's total draft pick haul up to 15 picks!!!  Heck, even the Patriots weren't that prolific.

Yeah, and they will have something like 4 picks in the first 61, if I remember what I read correctly.

Cali, I'd love to see Revis end up in SF. Just adding fuel to a division rivalry with all the twitter banter between he and Sherman.

The Chiefs overpaid for sure, but Alex Smith is a significant improvement over Matt Cassel. That would ordinarily be worrisome, but Andy Reid will definitely botch this. Only once in his entire coaching career has an Andy Reid-coached team been in the top 15 in rushing attempts (although his teams are usually pretty productive when they do run the ball, for what that's worth).

If he breaks his past trends and actualyl relies heavily on the running game and Jamaal Charles, KC could have a pretty potent offense. Smith had a few decent years in SF (only one really good year) without a great receiving corps. If they franchise tag Dwayne Bowe again (Reid likes his disgruntled WRs) he'll at least have one great target. The Chiefs are definitely improving, even if they're being really sloppy and inefficient in doing so.

I could've understand a team on the verge of being a playoff contender doing this (Cardinals) but the team holding the 1st overall pick? IMHO, you are trading for mediocrity, at best.

His "mobility" is superior to Cassel so he'll provide some fits but then again, Andy Reid may have him throwing 35 times a game which should be our strenght.

Here's something interesting:

Smith was drafted in 2005.  He had his 1st 300-yard passing game in 2009.  In his entire career, Smith threw for 3 300-yd games.

Manning had three 300-yard games as a Bronco under his belt by week 5 of last season.

I can believe that. I don't remember the 49ers having any good WRs during his career there. I also believe he was injured in all but 2 seasons. Seemed like every year, before this season, they were built to run and throw to the TEs. Obviously Kaepernack had some impact on opening up the offense but it also coincided with a rise in talent level at WR as well. It would have been interesting to have seen what Smith's #s would have been had he finished out the 2012 season. He probably would have just barely eked over 3k yards but his TD/INT rate and comp% was outstanding.

Project Smith's stats over a full season, and he's short of 3000 yards, and hits 20-21 TD's, with the same WR's that Kaepernick had to work with.

Chiefs weren't in all that great of a position, but they still managed to make a move that keeps them in mediocrity.  While Smith is an upgrade over Cassel, it was a pretty low bar to cover.  If anything, Smith may play just well enough to keep KC from drafting Manziel.  I know Andy Reid's able to get the best out of his QB's usually, but I just don't see Smith's ceiling being much higher than what we saw of him last season.  Plus, he loves to throw to a strong TE, and Moeaki's not quite the same level as Vernon Davis.

I eyeballed it. If we really want to do the math..1737/9x16=3088 yards. 13/9x16=23 TDs. And those numbers probably project higher seeing as he was knocked out of his 9th start early after completeing 7 of his 1st 8 attempts. He also was getting better and better each week before he was injured so some progression would be expected as well.

I wouldn't say that this is a move to sleep on though. Chiefs are probably gonna draft Joeckel, although I don't understand why not re-sign Albert and draft Warmack (ya, I'd take a guard no.1 overall in their situation). But either way they're going to have a solid O-line and a talented core of skill players that aren't AS handicapped as they're used to being. I don't think this will spring the Chiefs up over the Chargers or anything but they could end up doing surprisingly well with Smith and Reid at the helm

Crabtree had foot issues before this year as far as I can remember. Plus its natural progression for a WR to take at least 3 years to
flower.

Battle? Really?

Lloyd has had many subpar seasons, only the great Kyle Orton made him better. Bradford and Brady didnt have much success either.

I can see the possibility of a massive turnaround by the Chiefs simply by replacing the staff and QB. They have talent and they are strong on both sides of the LOS. I think they can bounce off the bottom pretty strongly and finish 2nd in the division. A .500 season or better is not unthinkable. Im not saying Alex Smith is the savior either btw, I just think he adds value as the QB while Cassell was taking away value.
