We have plenty of great sports stuff to explore,
so let's try to find you something you will enjoy.

This is what I keep getting from cbs.  And my thing is, "lookit, I KNOW what I'd enjoy, that's what I'm CLICKING ON!"

The actual data are the same, regardless of source, so it really boils down to ease of use and individual preferences.  For example, if one chooses to look at Oregon State's record against say Mizzou, there are numerous sites available so I'll use Stassen/Howell and CBFT to produce the exact same data.

http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin
/records/opp-opp.pl?start=1869&end=2012&team1=Oregon+State&team2=Missouri

or

http://www.cfbtrivia.com/cfbt_detai
l.php?sopp=Missouri&teamname=Oregon%20St.&fry=1869&thy=2012&vtm=on&cres=3&jpl=on

Either link will produce the same data facts, but some may prefer the layout and user interface of one site over the other.

You're kidding, right?

You don't get accurate results from football.stassen.com that you get from a lot of other sites in head to head match-ups.  That's because often times you don't get accurate info from stassen.

For instance, look up Alabama vs Auburn:

/records/opp-opp.pl?start=1869&end=2012&team1=Alabama&team2=Auburn]

All-time it say that Alabama leads the series 41-29-1

ds.php?fry=1869thy=2012&teamname=Alabama&oppname=Auburn&cres=1]

Other sites have it accurately at 42-34-1

If you get accurate info at football.stassen.com, you lucked out.  It's not a good place for accurate info.

You are correct 50, my comments were based on the example in which Mr W expressed interest in another thread.  In that instance stassen managed to deliver the same results.  I do recall it being discussed a few years ago that stassen's site relies heavily on the accuracy of the data his scripts pull from Howell's site database.  Stassen's results page does have the disclaimer below to account for the missing Bama/Auburn games prior to 1902:

Note: James' site contains only data for years when each team was considered 'major' (equivalent to today's I-A), and therefore will not necessarily yield true 'all-time' results.

This database deficiency would certainly skew all-time record results and was one of the many reasons I chose CFBT as my favorite stats vehicle several years ago.  Knowing you via the message board helped and was also a factor.

I recall there were a few other issues to do with conference alignment, and having to construct your own lengthy url's to pull stats off stassen beyond his default conference alignment to current.  Remember how old diffy tried incessantly to label CBFT as a mere trivia site because he always liked the default current conf alignment results he got from stassen much better, lol.

There are multiple problems with Stassen's site.

First he had two different databases.  That's not a problem, but neither delivers much in the way of accuracy.

The first one is his winning percentage calculator.  This one he created years and years ago.  It falls under the category of good idea, but bad delivery.  Stassen, but his own admission, spends about a half hour a year on it.  Accuracy suffers when you don't work at it.  He never had enough time in it to make a good effort of out it.  A lot of the win/loss results he would color with his opinion about which wins and losses to count.  That's all well and good, but that's just his opinion.  People more care about what's official, not what one guys opinion is.  On top of that, it was bad opinion because when you don't spend much time making your opinion, it's generally not very good.  I eventually convinced him to change his approach on that and it's a little better, but he still doesn't spend enough time to do a good job.

The seond database has a bunch of problems.  This one comes up with the head-to-head and "conference" records.  I could spend an hour explaining the problems with that one, but I'll hit the high points.  The obvious problem is that he got his information from Howell and that information is puposely incomplete and not designed for that purpose.   The second real obvious problem is, like you mentioned, compiling conference vs conference numbers is totally whacked.  You can calculate team vs conference numbers fine, but when you start combining teams, you have a group of teams vs a conference, regardless of the conference affiliation of the group of teams.  While that works well for one year, if you have changing membership over the years, it messes it up and produces worthless results.  The final problem I'll mention is his lack of effort, which causes accuracy issues.  Bascially, you can't do a query on the site without having to fact check it elsewhere, so what's the point?  The site is a waste of bandwidth.

I didnt post a link to any site because the links are screwed up on CBS it seems anyway. Stassen is a horrible database (if you want to call it that) to use. There is plenty of better ones that you can find with a simple google search. I like CFB Trivia myself.

In short, the fastest way to say "I have no clue what I'm talking about" is to hotlink stassen's site for anything. Using it is admission you've not fact checked anything and are just using whatever you find on the internet in hopes it's right. Nobody that's every seriously fact-checked Stassen continues to use it.

Stats I found on stassens work fine for me and they were right. All computers and databases are pretty much "garbage in-n-garbage out" to some degree. Post up your best sites and help the board out. What do you got to hide?
